That new Wilson Bridge

Just got back from a trip to Williamsburg using the new bridge--in fact, just a day after the Southbound part was opened.
Verdict--it's still a 3 lane drawbridge. Albeit new and likely not to fall in the river anytime soon.
Should note also that $3.00 a gallon gas dosen't appear to be the limit that might stop a lot of driving--I've never seen I-95 as busy, both directions.

It's not alleviating traffic at all - from what I hear on the radio (traffic reports) . I travel from MD to Northern VA every day, and, thankfully, don't go near the Wilson Bridge - but I hear about it during my commute. Still the same rush-hour backups.

You are correct, it is only half done. The other span is due to open in 2008 and will thus increase both sides to six lanes instead of 3. There are benefits to the new bridge now. It has lanes to pull off when you breakdown or have an accident that the old bridge did not have. This will be a help.

That's for sure. We have friends who live just off Backlick Road and they say thereis an accident or disabled vehicle near or on that bridge nearly every day.
Of course my friend who works in DC never uses that bridge--he rides his bike to work--says it's actually faster!!!
