So we're weighing two options for a holiday trip this year - Thanksgiving (probably Tuesday-Sunday) or right after New Year's (Wed 1/1-Sunday 1/5). Having never been for the holidays at all, can anyone weigh in on what I should think about as we make the call? Knowing the crowds will be crazy either way, would one of them be more or less crazy? Anything I should know about what would make either holiday period more or less unique than the other? Any thoughts appreciated, as always!!!

I have done both of those multiple times each. Your Thanksgiving dates may be slightly less crazy. Might also have a little less chance of rain on your Thanksgiving dates.

Another vote for Thanksgiving. We've found that the crowds right around New Year's have a different vibe. Maybe it's all the people coming in for the parade and the Rose Bowl? Lots of "newbies with an edge" is how DH puts it -- overtired, overwhelmed tourists who don't know where anything is, didn't do much/any research, and don't seem to be having much fun, and have no fear or shame taking it out on you! (We've also met lots of very nice folks and had great conversations about where they were from and why they were visiting for the parade or game.) But the "tourists with an edge"? I'll take Thanksgiving!

Definitely Thanksgiving. Until about the 4th of Jan, it will be a MADHOUSE.

D'oh! Well, after I posted this, my husband pointed out that he's much more likely to have to deal with work stuff over Thanksgiving than over New Year's... and I realized that's true for me, too, so we decided to bite the bullet and risk the MADHOUSE. At least we're prepared for insanity, and will know what we're up against!!!
