Thanksgiving turkey..

Both!

We usually have a large gathering for dinner, so we do stuffing both in and out! :goodvibes

I'm one happy Nana, as luckily this year will be neither, please see ticker!?!? :mickeyjum :goofy: :donald: :tigger:

Hey is it too late to adopt me?????

Have a great time!:thumbsup2

We do Thanksgiving TWICE every year :faint: and it's usually my mom who makes the stuffing. She normally makes 5-6 pans of the stuff, because there are always a ton of people who show up for her Thanksgiving dinners. Not only is there my little family (DH, DS and myself) but my sister, her two kids, her boyfriend, my brother, sometimes his girlfriend of the moment, several of my stepbrothers/sisters and THEIR DH/DW/DKids and usually two or three neighbors or friends or random person she just asked to join her.:thumbsup2

Stuffing inside, always. Last year I made an outrageous Sage, Sausage and Cranberry stuffing. It was incredible. My ILs looked at it like it was some dish from from Mars and politely declined it... Guess it couldn't compare with Stove Top...:lmao: :lmao:

I make cornbread dressing. Its a combination of cornbread and white bread crumbs mixed with chopped celery and onion, salt and pepper, a little poultry seasoning, about four beaten eggs, melted butter, and broth, baked until brown on top but moist in the center. Served with turkey gravy - no giblets!:crazy2:

OMG, why can't it be Thanksgiving right now?!?

I always stuff the bird but usually have some left over that gets cooked on the side. My DH and I use to fight about it every Thanksgiving. His family made a tomato juice and onion "gravy" for the stufffing. It was disgusting but then again his mothers stuffing was black. It wasn't burnt, just black. I refused to eat there after the first Thanksgiving we spent together.

I add apples and golden raisins to mine and it is divine. IL's don't care for it though.

I have to do both since BIL and family is vegetarian, so we have to have something for them to eat as well.

In the past, we've made both. But, last year, we opted to just make stuffing in a pan and the turkey cooked soooooo much faster. Plus, it eliminated the time required to stuff and unstuff the bird. We'll be making just pan stuffing again this year.

For stuffing, we start with the packaged herbed cubes, DH makes a broth from the neck and other innards and I finely cut up onion and celery. Last year, in lieu of stuffing, we placed large pieces of onion in the turkey cavity and rubbed the bird with olive oil and dried thyme. It was really delicious.

Our kids won't touch stuffing, but DH and I love it.

Depends on how I cook the bird. If I fry or smoke it, then the stuffing is outside, if I roast it in the oven then the stuffing is inside.

Hey, can we talk about side dishes? I am making a sweet potato pudding this year. I did persimmon pudding last year (someone on the board was kind enough to give me a recipe) but it got mixed reviews from family.

I have 13 people this year (4 vegetarian) and I need lots of (inexpensive) ideas in addition to stuffing and sweet potato pudding.

Okay - here's mine.. (Recipe from my late MIL..) And it's cooked inside the bird..

Dry bread cubes (from a package - like the seasoned ones)
Finely diced celery
Finely diced onion
Bulk pork sausage (the kind in a "roll")
Egg
Bell's Poultry Seasoning

I cook the onions, celery, and crumbled pork sausage until the sausage is no longer pink, in a large skillet; drain..

In a big bowl, I mix together the drained onion/celery/pork sauage mix; bread cubes; egg; and Bell's Seasoning (to taste).. Mix it up good and then stuff it in the bird..

It's so yummy, I could eat a whole plate of that alone!! :thumbsup2

We've done it both ways. I don't eat stuffing that's been in the bird. DH has a recipe from his grandmother that uses cornbread molded into little "patties" and baked in the oven. YUM!

Mashed potatoes are a must in our house. I buy gravy from Pillsbury that's vegetarian and very easy; just add water. I also make cranberry relish with an apple and a pear. Lots of different vegetables, like creamed spinach or simple broccoli are always good, too.

I made this cashew nut loaf last Christmas: http://www.recipezaar.com/145246

Thanks for the cashew loaf recipe. It sounds interesting.
Was it any good?

It sounds good.I never thought of deviled eggs, but everyone loves them. Question: why cottage cheese? That sounds a little strange, no?

Lots of cottage cheese lovers in my family.. :) If you want to serve cottage cheese that's a little fancier, you could always puchase one that has some kind of fruit in it.. We like the pineapple one with our ham on Easter..:thumbsup2

I think I'll pass on the cottage cheese, but the rest sounds just wonderful.
