To all the Thanksgiving Fort Dissers:

Here in Birmingham, Alabama where I live there is a 10k race (6.2 mile) on every Thanksgiving Day morning that is the oldest continuous race in town (over 30 years straight). I have done it for many years (although not the last 2) because it's a good feeling to burn off some calories to make room for the ones you are about to eat.

I'm in no shape to do 6 miles. I'm in no shape to run. But I still like the idea of burning off some calories to make room for the new ones. Would anyone be interested in maybe doing a walk on Thanksgiving morning for about 45 miutes-1 hour around the Fort sidewalks? Pace to be determined by the group but should be something we can all handle; no race, I'm calling it a walk. We could meet at the Meadow Trading Post maybe 7:30 a.m. (on the 900 loop side), get in a walk while it's still cool, and make room for the pumpkin pie and turkey/dressing.

Let me put it another way - I'm going to do a walk on Thanksgiving morning and it would be fun to have some Dissers to talk with. I don't know if anyone willing wants to start earlier or later but I am flexible.

I also mentioned this in the Official Thanksgiving Day post but I wanted to do it as a seperate post to get the most visibility and attendees. Just think of that guilt-free piece of pumpkin pie! I hope 7:30 a.m. is early enough to avoid turkey cooking time and entice some of the cooks to come join us as well. So if you can possibly join us please do - we'll have fun.

I won't have access to the boards/DIS once I get to the Fort on Sat 11/21 so if anyone has a question come find me in a partial loop (1500 or 2000); we'll be easy to spot with all the Alabama Crimson Tide stuff around the campsite.

I hope to see all of you there!

I was there last year for Thanksgiving, but sadly, not this year. :sad2: Have a good walk for me!

My husband and I would be interested but 7:30 may be a little early for us. If the time is pushed back any please post.

Me too! I SO would have loved to participate if this post would have been a year ago.

We'll be running our own local "Turkey Trot" this year (the 73rd running of it...talk about an old race, Bama Ed!)

Have fun, I hope you guys get a lot of participants...perhaps this could become a tradition!

73 years. Yowza!

In lieu of Sonya's request, we can push the start back to 8 a.m. which will leave us up to an hour to walk and the cooks who might join us will need about 4 hours if they're baking a turkey.

So we'll meet at 8 a.m. at the Meadow Trading Post on the 900 loop side for our Turkey Day Dash. :woohoo:

Did y'all go for the walk? How was it?

Fill us at home in on the Fort Thanksgiving happenings!

(Yes, I'm one day late, but we've been busy shopping around here...)

Leslie,

Uh, well, let me put it this way.....

When it comes to exercise, everyone has the best intentions.....

I was there from 7:40 to 8:10 that morning but everyone else was busy.

But I rode my bike alot and had an Indiana Jone-like adventure that I will post in a seperate thread.

But it was gratifying to see the Fort especially on Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) and Friday. People were out walking, biking, playing football in the field near the tennis courts, volleyball next to that, in the pool, fishing in the canals. It was sunny and between 65-70F. The pool was busy (lots of swimmers but the lifeguards wearing jackets).

The hot tub was HOT.

The kids activities during the day were fun especially the hula hoop competition at 2 pm on Tuesday (it was 80F that day). People competed in age groups and let me say the competition got more interesting the older the competitors got (into my age range that is:lmao:) and they were all female let me add.

But I was not allowed to observe too many details! :3dglasses

I love being at the Fort because by its nature it encourages a healthy outdoor active lifestyle (especially for campers as opposed to cabin folks) so that was good to see. :woohoo:
