I'm thinking of going away over Thanksgiving weekend with the family. I would like someplace relatively warm, but I don't want to spend a lot of money. The kids would like a nice pool to swim. I know normally Thanksgiving weekend is a bad time to go anywhere, but I thought with the economy maybe I could find a good deal. I would consider Orlando, but would probably skip Disney just because of the crowds. Where could a family of four go for under $1000? We're from Ohio. I've checked airfare for different destinations, and I can get outbound flights cheaply. It's getting home that's the problem.

OK, not warm, but beautiful. We have gone to Canada over Thanksgiving a couple of times. Montreal is a fabulous city for kids, and airfare is cheap and available (even using miles!) because it is not a Canadian holiday. You can find hotels with great indoor pools. Toronto is fun as well, and driveable.

We went to Gatlinburg over Thanksgiving and had a blast! The weather was in the upper 60's and low 70's (that can vary, I'm sure). We had a place with an indoor pool so the kids did swim. The crowds were light until Friday then the shoppers came in. We had a great time and would highly recommend it for a quick trip.

Um, Disney World?

(I'm so sorry -- I couldn't resist.)

Check out bookit.com. They have some really good packages.

It's not south, or neccessarily warmer, but my kids have been dying to get back to the kalahari for a longer stay. I remember last year they had a special Thanksgiving dinner package that seemed to be reasonably priced. Last Thanksgiving we spent several days in williamsburg at great wolf. It was enjoyable but nowhere near as nice as the Kalahari.

sorry I can't help much, we usually head to Orlando too...

I am also going to suggest the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, Tennessee area. We went last fall in early Nov, and it was such a special trip. Great family destination with so much to do. If you can afford a cabin, I highly recommend it. But, if not, there are LOTS of nice hotels in the area in a variety of price ranges. Don't miss the evening shows and dinner shows. We really enjoyed the Hoot-n-Hollar and the Magic Show.
