Thanksgiving and Political Discussion

Well now that we've gone OT lol...flashing yellow arrow is around me as well.

The definition is-

Here's a background to flashing yellows in general-

While it's only been around since 2009 nationwide it hasn't been difficult to pick up at least for me because it's an arrow not a solid light (and the signs-see below) but I can understand how others might get confused..kinda depends to me what traffic signals were like before the flashing yellows were installed as well as the given intersection.

I like how they put signs up right at the specific traffic light that has the arrow. They do vary but an example is:

...Annnddd now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

That's odd. I live just over the state line, and we don't have flashing yellow arrows here. At least not in my area.

P.S. We don't have those signs like Mackenzie mentioned.
Well now that sucks. Every time we have a traffic signal with a flashing yellow light installed they have a sign on them. There are in other places around the country too but that would be a bummer if not around you.

We also have green arrows, but they're solid green, and mean that you can safely turn. See, I would think the solid green would mean that it was safe, not that I had to wait for a break in traffic, which might be the confusion she's referring to.
Umm.. I think you are confused here. I was talking about flashing yellow arrows and what they mean.

A solid green arrow actually does mean you can safely turn. At least around me it's used before the traffic going straight in both directions are solid green lights (no arrow) in order to give people turning left time to turn. Then the light turns flashing yellow while the straight traffic is solid green (no arrow) and you are to yield to traffic going straight.

I must say I found your post hilarious. :rotfl2: You are the type of agitator this thread is written about; the one the rest of the family rolls their eyes when referring to and mildly dreads being seated across from. And the fact that you consider this a service to them, well, I just...:rotfl:Thanks for the laugh this morning. Good luck on your mission and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

I'm glad there are people still willing to speak out - always welcome at out table.

Its going to be tough this year- I think my brother is the only one on one side and the rest of us on the other- he is still upset about the loss and it wont take much to push him over the edge!

Your brother is welcome at our table next year - if anyone not a billionaire can afford a Thanksgiving dinner.

I said my area which is true they are all over JoCo haven't paid much attention to the MO side as I don't drive over there all the time and when I do it's usually just on the highways or Plaza or Downtown area. The information I posted said they are allowed to be used nationwide. I however, didn't say there are everywhere. The information I quoted and the pics are actually from the MN DOT website because they had the information in a spelled out way so it's not just my tiny part of JoCo that has them.

City of Overland Park has the same information as MN DOT. They also go on to say "The flashing yellow arrow signals can be found at many intersections in Overland Park and at locations throughout the Kansas City metro area."

Gosh, no need to be defensive. :confused3 I wasn't saying you were wrong, just noting it was odd that they were in one area of the metro and not the other.

I wasn't trying to be defensive so I apologize if I came off that way. It wasn't easy to tell if you were saying 'oh really they aren't in my area you sure they are that common?'..because they are all around our area versus 'in my day to day drive I don't see them'. Again apologies if it came off defensive it wasn't my intent.

I also edited my post to reflect what OP's website says which is "The flashing yellow arrow signals can be found at many intersections in Overland Park and at locations throughout the Kansas City metro area."

So it is found in the KC metro but just might not be directly near you.

ETA: It could be that JoCo jumped on the flashing yellow bandwagon and that's why you don't see them as much on the KCMO side.

Sorry if my post came across the wrong way.

My son and I avoided it completely
We drove from pittsburgh to Indy for the Steelers colts game Thanksgiving night
He and I had a wonderful time
He's off to college next year

One huge plus was no dinner at the inlaws

We moved from the Northeast to North Carolina last year, and it was the first time I'd seen the flashing yellow arrow for "turn when safe". We figured it out quickly, but it's very different from the old New England philosophy, where a yellow light means, "go faster, you're going to miss your chance!"

Exactly, and "Right Turn on Red" mean "GO NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! ROLL and GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Yeah, I re-read what you wrote, and I wrote, and I don't know what I was thinking about. Never mind!

Well actually here in Boston it means speed so you can get through it :rotfl2::rotfl2:
Ugh, those people are stupid. I have seen so many accidents and people hauled off in ambulances because some idiot wants to get through the intersection, regardless if it's yellow or red. They don't care about other peoples well being. It's all about their time being more important then everyone elses. Who cares who they hurt or kill in the process.

Little 4 year old just died a couple of days ago because of a scenario similar to this. Oh well, they made the light though!!!! That's what matters most!

At my house nobody wanted to talk politics, but my DH and BIL were talking about their cellphones and which ones they wanted to upgrade to (BIL still has his Edge 7 that he is refusing to take back, and DH is trying to decide what one to buy now) and my MIL was whining "Can't anybody talk about anything besides cell phones and video games?" So my FIL asked my DH about what the security was like around Trump Tower when my DH was in Manhattan last week, then she started complaining that she didn't want to talk politics. You just can't win with some people.

Had dinner at home with just us and the kids so no worries. Younger son has different views than the rest of us but he is always respectful in what he has to say and knows when to keep his opinions to himself. Now at my in laws, they always get into these huge discussions with everyone talking at once. Funny thing is they are always on the same side, soooo not sure why the need for for such passionate discussions.

As for the yellow blinking arrows, we just had our first light like that put up. They were re-doing an intersection close to my house. There is no sign. They just completely moved the turn lane and have this light at the end of it. Very, very confusing.
