Coming home a couple of weeks ago on my 9:30ish flight MCO to PHL I knew it was oversold. So we got there pretty early, and I asked the gate agent if they would be looking for volunteers.
He said he didn't know yet, but they might as the flight was oversold.
I said that we might be willing to give up our seats. He said if we did we would be put up for the night and be reticketed for a flight the next day, and we'd each get a voucher for a free ticket anywhere in the lower 48. I asked if the tickets for the next days flight could be in first class and he said "of course".
So about 10 minutes before they began loading, he called me back up to the counter. He told me that they ahd some no shows, so they wouldn't need our seats, but as a thank you for volunteering he bumped the thre of us to first on that flight! WOOHOO!!!!
I thanked him very much for his kindness and went back to my seat with a big smile on my face. DH asked me what had happened, and I said "Nothing really, but they don't need our seats." I didn't tell him we had been moved to first until our original row was called to board, then told him the good news
