It helped.

We spent a lot of time talking about George. He was a master tease. He joined the Illinois state police, rising to quite a high position and then left to become head of security for a big company. My husband had everyone in laughter when he told about our moving into our first house. I was at work and Roy was home unpacking when two state police cars pulled into the driveway, sirens blaring. They raced into the house, guns drawn and forced Roy to stand against the car while they frisked him. George explained that the new neighbors ought to know who we were.

Someone else told about George's daughter going on her first date. George called a policeman friend and said "bring the squad car, you are driving them."

How he harrassed another officer who got a job as head of security of a convention center, begging to be allowed to drive the Zamboni.

How he teased my daughter relentlessly at her wedding. And how she loved it.

Your mom sounds like a wonderful person.

Seeing the garden in a sort of rebirth is a reaffirmation I think. I am going to write my friend and tell her that (hopefully in better form).

He sounds like he was a wonderful man bringing joy and laughter to all those lucky enough to share his life.

Why don't you plant a small tree (possibly a weeping cherry) or perennial which could remind you of the joy he brought to your life.

George sounds like he brought smiles and laughter into many people's lives. Wonderful memories for all who loved him. :)

George sounds like a fun to be with person. Thanks for sharing some of his wit with us.

George sounds like he will be will you for a very, very long time. Bring him to this board whenever you need to. He sounds like he would have fit right in.....

Wow. I obviously missed something and went searching for what had to be the first part of this post. My deepest condolences to you and your childhood friend. George does sound like a very special person.

Reading this posting and the original one was very touching for me. People touch our lives in so many ways and it is amazing how gardening can be so therapeutic and renewing for so many of us. The gift of a garden and the gift of a friendship are so similar - beautiful but fleeting - and one must grasp the moments when they come to enjoy both.

Mamu, the story of your mom is also simply amazing.

God bless you guys.
