Last week at Disney, I saw the cutest little boy kind of wandering about 10-15 feet in front of his parents and he was wearing a red t-shirt that said I Have Autism, Please be Patient.

Not sure how the parents here feel about it, but I thought it was good becaues I would have thought, wow, why aren't they holding his hand and making him walk next to them...instead I didn't judge or worry and smiled at them.

Since Alex's seizures and sudden mood swings, I have also learned not to judge anyone and their children's behavior.

You are wonderful! You deal with you issues that are sooo different than ours! We have ambulatory children!!! You have a lot more on your plate than we do in a lot of ways...I am praying for you and Alize........ Hang in there...

I smiled to see this thread.

My DS 8 yo has mild autism - most people would never know it just walking along side us or seeing us in the store.

But there are those times when meltdowns happen or he walks 20 steps ahead of us and no matter how much we say "slow down", he just keeps going.

Hopefully more people will realize they are not being brats, their brains are just wired differently

oh how i can so totally agree with you LuvTinker on how your son is. Most people to look at him wouldnt know that he has pdd,nos (just changed from aspergers) bipolar and anxiety issues. My daughter too. You can tell when they have the SEVERE meltdowns. I hate it when people stare at you and tell you cant you control your child and all the snide comments and looks. If people only know how much it hurt when they do that.

While at California Grill, i think I witnessed a meltdown. Working with children of special needs, it was pretty easy to see that this child was just overwhelmed with the people and the extreme noise level. I did mention that if they needed a quiet place to wait for their table then walking down to look out to hte observation deck might help a little. I got a look of complete relief as they hurried out of the big crowd.

I believe parents with children who have special needs bring a new and beautiful environment to Disney. These children sometimes must overcome great challenges just to meet Mickey, and if I know something that could help a little, I'm always more than willing to assist.

Last week at SuperTarget, DS10, ASD, had a spectacular meltdown. After immediately returning to our car, DS16 said he was very upset with all the "brat" comments he overheard. He asked if I am ever embarassed by DS10's behavior. I reminded DS16 that DS10 is just as God made him. I refuse to be embarassed by behavior resulting from a disability, over which DS10 has little control. But I sure do wish for more understanding on the part of the public. This thread is a ray of sunshine! Thanks to all who are more understanding as a result of thes boards.

My DD is a therapist for kids with autism and I have learned a lot from her. I just want to send hugs to all the parents that have these beautiful, special children, I can't believe what she has to go through on a daily basis with these kids. Don't get me wrong, she loves her job, but it is certainly a challenge at times.
