Thank you gift ideas

I will be traveling to another state with a friend of mine and we will be staying with her mother. My friend and I are both bringing our children. I want to send her a thank you gift after we leave for letting us stay in her home. I have only met her once and do not know her well. I also will want to send my friend a gift for inviting us.
Ideas?

My standard go to gifts are yankee candles and bath and body works - candles because even if someone is "scent" sensitive - candles are easy to re-gift as housewarming/hostess gifts and bath and body because they allow gift recipients to exchange for a different scent if they don't like the one I picked.

A couple other things that pop to mind are a restaurant gift certificate, or wait and see what mom is into (ie gardening, knitting, scrapbooking) and select a gift based on her interests.

Oh also - have the kids make homemade thank you card to send!

OR maybe offer to treat everyone to dinner one night during the stay.

How about a monogrammed bag? Thirty-One has some really cute bags pretty inexpensive and nice quality. I bought my kids' teachers bags as a thank you for the end of the year.

I think a nice card with a gift certificate for a local restaurant (perhaps even Subway) is a nice idea. It saves them time one evening from cooking.

I'm a fan of flowers - either a premade basket for her porch/steps or an arrangement sent after you leave with a note of thanks.

Is there enough of a geographical difference that something "local" to you wouldn't be to her? (When in a similar situation, I've gotten a little gift basket of Maine maple products or Stonewall Kitchen {a Maine company that makes baking mixes and condiements.})

I think flowers to your friend post trip is lovely.
As far as mom goes, perhaps a simple dinner out while you are there and then after leaving a handmade note from the kids and from you, a small gift that you can choose based on what her likes are (is she a gardener etc) while you visit???

Maybe a bottle of Dessert wine and some chocolates
I would even recommend a Gift Card to her favorite establishment. I'm sure that her daughter knows what her Mom likes and dislikes.

Maybe a Thank You card and some $$$$ like $50
