Texas to open 100%

For those of you still freaking out about this, most of the big retailers and schools are still requiring masks. It’s not as if we just all ripped our masks off at once and went running through the streets spewing respiratory droplets on everyone we could find.

Is that first dose OR percentage of people considered fully vaccinated which right now means they've received 2 doses.
It's low even for the second shot. Long Beach is considered to be ahead of the curve, but we are at 16.1% second shot, and that's assuming all shots are being administered in Long Beach. LOTS of people are getting shots in LA County because they can't get appointments in LB. Could be a good % of the shots are going to non-Long Beach residents, but I'd still say that 16% number is conservative.

It's also a great example of the problems with it. We don't have rigid state borders but the regulations vary state to state. Regulations in Illinois don't mean much if you border Wisconsin as a portion of the population is jumping over there to dine/party/etc. In the middle of last year you could actually see cases increase county by county in states around Wisconsin due to their reopening. It was fascinating.

Out of the 50 states, Hawaii has had the lowest numbers and I would argue it's because they actually have a bubble without the influence of surrounding states.

I'll concede in advance that this could also be viewed as "no reason to have stricter rules because one of your neighbors is going to screw it up" and it would be a completely logical argument.
So you want strict state to state border control?

This has always been the argument against Federalism but when the Constitution was written the states were very wary of the Federal government having too much power. Federalism allowed the states to give up some power but keep most of it for themselves since states should have a better idea of what the people within their states need and want. Border issues are always going to pop up. Take dry counties it is not like everyone who lives in the county is against drinking so they just leave the county to drink. Federalism is what makes our Constitution and government unique. I know that in the current climate everyone wants to change everything but the Constitution has worked and adapted for over 230 years. As an individual you can make choices that you feel protect you and your family. You have a choice to dine in or take out. You have a choice to shop or use a delivery service. In today's world there are so many more choices than in the past. Make a decision based on what is best for you and your family.

Thank You, Mrs Magoo:
Thanks for reminding us about OUR constitution and why it works and why we need to fight to keep our constitutional rightsj, because they are there for a purpose and they work.
I agree that if people want to take precautions, then they should. I have no problem with that. My brother is in an open state, and he chooses to wear a mask while out due to his lung problems. Would he do that if there was no covid? YES he would, to protect himself and feel safe.
It's time to take the bandaid off and go on with life, and make it your choice to go somewhere or not, or to wear a mask or not, or to stay away from other people who are too close(bet you did that before all this) or not. Not all people will do that, and that's not going to change with restrictions which has been commented on here in several threads.
Anyway, thanks for reminding us of this very important document.

I don't see where it's anyone's "right" to refuse to wear a mask and maybe get somebody deathly ill. I have said it on these boards before- I loathe wearing a mask. BUT, I don't resent it because my freedoms are being infringed upon, I resent it because I'm being inconvenienced...and if my being inconvenienced helps to stop the spread while people are being vaccinated, then I do it. It's not that hard to grasp.

It makes me sad that as a country we couldn't come together as a people and do what needed to be done, like on the WW2 homefront.

I will preface by saying that private businesses can ask me to wear a mask and I will do it - PERIOD. What I resent is the mandates that don't follow the science though, and the holier-than-thou people who get uppity about it. Crowded street, OK, the masks start to make sense. You want to give me the stink-eye from behind your mask @ 6a as I walk my dog across the street from you? Get a life.

Actually, mandatory mask requirements in public spaces do constrict individual rights. Totally understand them in private spaces, and am happy to comply (or not enter) however, if one is to be forced to wear a mask in a public space for “health“ reasons, perhaps one should also be forced to exercise regularly, not eat fatty foods, and take appropriate vitamin regimens as well.

while we’re at it, prohibit smoking in public, spitting, talking loudly, wearing offensive cologne/perfume, and/or wearing mismatched clothing, which can also offend the senses.

Next up: how much and what kind of soft drinks and alcohol, or food one can consume for that matter. If they attempt to make my husband eat bananas they are in for a fight. He has already instructed our kids and various nieces and nephews to pull the plug on him if they try to feed him bananas when he gets to the nursing home, and he is serious.

Do you wear a mask in your home? Why not? Because you aren't going to get exposed in your house, right (without letting someone else in your house)? If I'm walking down to get my mail or on a sidewalk or track with no one around, why should I be forced to wear a mask?

If you walk past a single person, even if neither of you is masked, the odds of catching anything from them is almost 0. In a crowd? Staying with a group much less a crowd, I totally get it. Mask up! But I was criticized earlier in the thread for saying you should be allowed to remove your mask if there is no one within 10' of you.

It’s interesting that schools in California have suddenly decided it’s safe to open, even before staff have been vaccinated, since Newsom just promised money to those that open. Yet the state keeps reminding us how the numbers make it unsafe to do anything else.

I should have added that there are exceptions that use common sense, yes. I wasn't singling you or anyone else out, more like having a rant in general. I think some of the strife in this country over masks comes from that fact that we have no unified response as a nation, which we should have. I live in an area where it's a given that masks are to be worn in most situations- excluding the ones you mentioned (except for the one where you walk by someone). I don't put my mask on to go out to get into the car unless someone is going to walk close to me on the sidewalk as I'm doing so, for instance.

There was one heck of a big screw-up from the Powers That Be when this all started. We should have had one rule as a nation on the wearing of masks, and what would be open and what would not and how many people could safely gather, etc. This did not happen, instead masks in particular were weaponized for political gain, and people took sides.

I'm tired, we all are. I'm frustrated. I'm sick of this whole thing. But the end is within our grasp. The fire is halfway out; now is not the time to call off the hoses.

Yup. Interesting indeed.

You’re not the only person who said this and I always infer that the “powers that be” refer to the President. Nobody has ever explained how they expected this to happen.

The President and the CDC can make recommendations, but outside of very narrow scope regarding interstate travel and Federal buildings, it is up to the states which of those recommendations they follow. Beyond that, there are even more nuances to directives that are within the power the county/municipality.

Maybe a very charismatic President could have persuaded every state and municipality to agree but I’m not sure that person exists and I’ve never seen any other way to make one rule on every issue possible? Most of our laws are set on the state level and sometimes even go against Federal laws which create really unique situations (eg legalization of Marijuana)

I was referring to the President, yes. What the President says, any President says, matters- as the events of January 6th taught us all too well.
