Texas to open 100%

At least around where I live, I don’t think much is going to change. People that don’t want to wear one already don’t. Those who do, will continue to do so. Most major corporations will continue their requirements. The small business owners will be the ones grappling with their own decision to require masks or limit capacity.
I live in Texas and I agree with this also. I think I will continue to wear a mask. I don’t think much will change. Most businesses will probably still require it. Even prior to this if you didn’t wear a mask most larger stores wouldn’t say anything.

In other news, crashes are down 80% at blind intersections where we put stop signs in. So we're removing all the stop signs. We don't need them any more.

Well then why buckle a seatbelt either. If you can avoid crashing or hard braking, there's no reason to seatbelt. After all, I've only ever needed it once in my entire lifetime.
The reality is you wear a mask for the same reason you wear a seatbelt. You never know before hand exactly when the time will come when you crash and it's so minor an inconvenience as to be trivial. Similarly, you never know when that time will come that you cannot maintain your 10 feet. And wearing a mask is such a minor inconvenience as to be trivial.

Using this logic, you are one of those that will never be in favor of a maskless society ever again.

People die from the flu every year. That’s been curbed drastically. Masks 4 ever! The benefits of isolation are proven out, new normal!

Its such a slippery never ending slope when you want to apply that type of logic.

I remember 2 weeks. Then six weeks. Then "just a few months". Then "just a few more months". Then "it's just one year"' Sometimes it feels never-ending.

And it’s started again with the vaccine rollout. It was supposed to be mid-January then first week of February then end of February. Now it’s another 2-4 weeks. Best part is that the last delay is because they bumped teachers to the front of the line ahead of other essentials. Some teachers here haven’t even been in the classroom in a year but are out there crying that they need the vaccine.

They’re even in front of prison guards! They have absolutely no shame.

Teachers were prioritized in Long Beach, CA. There are no plans for in person school to resume in Long Beach this academic year.

Seems legit.

Bull puckey. If I'm walking out to my mailbox, I don't need a mask. Even if someone is walking down the sidewalk, and we're going to hit the same point at the same time, I can easily stop 6-10' away and let them pass, or (heaven forbid) just keep walking, and be within 6' for literally less than five seconds. The odds of them coughing or sneezing on me are EXTREMELY slim.

As far as a ballpark, sure, take the mask with you. Wear it from your car, into the stadium and to your seat. There's no one sitting within 10' of you? There's no really reason for you to wear a mask. Someone comes by and sits down close to you? Put the mask on. Need to go to the bathroom or get food/drink? Put the mask on.

If I drop my kid off at an activity and I'm sitting in the parking lot, I undo my seat belt. You wear a seatbelt because there is a chance whenever your vehicle is moving or on a road that you can be involved in an accident. If I'm walking to my mailbox and there's no one around, there is ZERO chance of catching Covid. If I'm on a hiking trail and even if someone passes me, there's only a SLIGHT chance of catching Covid.

Biggest eyebrow raiser for me when Colorado was prioritizing prisoners... I can understand why they would but the political optics of that decision were terrible.

I think the guy who runs FL and also I think GA, back when they did not want masks worn, said local governments could not mandate differently than dictated by the state. I think there were a number of outlier states like that.
GA I recall, the Governor did that in August and was promptly sued by the Mayor of Atlanta, I do not know how that lawsuit worked out. I do not recall hearing anything like that in FL.
it doesn’t appear the virus is going anywhere. It also appears the vaccine is a bandaid due to mutations and having ‘recovered’ from COVID only provides a very short term immunity.

I guess I’d feel differently if the vaccine was definitely the answer or it was mutating to a less dangerous version but nothing so far indicates this won’t still be a problem 10 years from now.
The last number that I saw was that having recovered from a COVID-19 infection gives at least 9 months of immunity to 98% or better of those that have had it. The scientific community is continually studying this and 9 months is as long as they have data for. The interview I read stated that it appears from all the data that there will be multiple years of protection.

IMO, those kinds of measures weren't needed when there WASN'T a vaccine. If you can be 10'+ away from someone outside, there is no reason to mask. This includes (but not limited to) passing someone on a track/hike, going to mailbox, and attending a sporting event.
Would you feel comfortable going to a Bama game this fall, Sam?

www.bleacherreport.com/articles/2934017-alabama-planning-to-host-full-capacity-crowds-at-bryant-denny-stadium-in-2021

The University of Alabama is expecting to have a full house when the defending national champions return for the 2021 season.

Athletic Director Greg Byrne said Monday that the school was "moving forward with plans to have a full stadium in the fall" as the University of Alabama system announced plans to return to in-person learning without restrictions for the fall semester.

Bryant-Denny Stadium has a capacity of 100,077.

I could be wrong but I believe prioritizing teachers recently because a statewide thing and our kids are going back to in person school next month. So in some places in the state it was needed.

I just *heard* yesterday (I should go look for a link) that they've now confirmed that reinfection is happening with the Brazil variant with apparently very little lag time between infections. That was a news soundbite so not sure of all the details there.

I own a medical practice in Texas. My partners and I decided last night to stick with science and require masks to be seen. We'll be happy to reschedule you if you won't wear a mask.

This morning, the largest hospital chain in Houston sent out a letter saying nothing has changed for them and they will require masks in all hospitals and clinics until the science supports otherwise.
That makes perfect sense to me from both the medical professional's viewpoint AND the patient viewpoint.

Medical staff are spending their entire workday with patients who may have, or may have been exposed to, Covid -- which they may or may not know about, and may or may not tell the truth about.

You see a stream of patients and they are in your workspace all day long.

Patients visiting your office are visiting that same workspace, and interacting with your staff -- who are seeing a stream of other patients all day long. So they are indirectly exposed to all those folks, not matter how well you clean.

Not only are you interacting with each other -- but those interactions are up close and personal, often for significant periods of time.

It's a two-way street for both healthcare and patients.

Here’s the real problem. You thought the umbrellas was keeping you dry, but the fact was you just got lucky it never rained on you.
Yes. Lol. Another challenge to my metaphor. In your challenge to the metaphor, a person could stand out in a rainstorm without an umbrella and not get wet. It is that illogical thinking that has gotten us here. 😕

Please read my entire message you quoted... specifically the "being able to sit 10' away from others". Obviously if they're going for a full house, you won't have that separation.

That being said, I don't know how I'm going to feel in the fall. Right now, to answer your question, no, I would not go somewhere with 100k+ people crammed shoulder to shoulder.

My son has a soccer game on Sunday at a college field. The stadium seats 830. Each team is allowed 24 fans. That seems extreme to me. Maybe it isn't to you.

In the fall, OF COURSE, I would be comfortable. Why wouldn’t I be?

That's the 10 million dollar question, isn't it?

Meanwhile my husband's diabetic, obese 63 year old aunt in Long Beach is still waiting...
OK, two things. Well, 3 things. FIRST - I have absolutely had it with the LBUSD and the continual moving of the bar to get schools back open. Having said that, (2) here is the plan in Long Beach, and I may be a sucker (again) but this time I think it will happen;
K-5 opening 3/31, 2.5 hours a day, no matter the color tier. I know, the 2.5 hour a day plan is 100% bogus, but that's what it is.
Seniors going back 4/19 if we are in red tier, all other grades going back 4/26 - I think this will happen. That would be alternate 2-3 days a week, full days, 1/2 the classes, the other days still remote. Not perfect, it's a foot in the door, and about 9 months too late, We can't all be in Florida.

Here's why I think it will happen: the Governor said today, in a press conference held in Long Beach, that there are a dozen counties that he thinks will move to red tier next week. LA County is 3rd or 4th lowest Rt right now - would certainly seem to indicate that LA County and Orange County for that matter will be in that group. Again, I may be a sucker, I'm an optimist at heart - call it a fatal flaw.

OK, thing 3 - Your husband's aunt is eligible for the vaccine in Long Beach on March 15 (source http://www.longbeach.gov/health/diseases-and-condition/information-on/coronavirus/vaxlb/ ) DON'T WAIT FOR THEM TO CALL YOU!!! DON'T RELY ON LONG BEACH TO DO IT!! My DM76 lives across the street from the convention center where LB is doing vaccines. I was on the LA County and the Long Beach City vaccine websites hourly and finally got her an appointment (and now vaccines) in Downey (Los Angeles County). She is on the e-mail list and was from the very start, we still have not been contacted. DO NOT WAIT, DO NOT GIVE UP! If she works in Orange County, try that too. Treat it like the last day of your vacation and you really want a ROTR BG and be really aggressive about it. No idea why the Mayor and the governor think that Long Beach is such a shining example of vaccine distribution - the County is doing a much better job IMHO.
