What exactly is a server? Just curious...is it just a powerful computer?

A server is just a computer running a server operating system. Most of them are much more capable than regular computers but not always.

Servers can run from a few hundred dollars for an old used one to the tens of thousands of dollars.

One of my computers on my desk is a server. I just use it as a regular PC. All of my other PC's are faster than the server, but they can't do some of the things that the server can do.
