Has anyone here ever had to have their gallbladder out? I am having the classic symptoms of gallbladder disease and might I just say that it totally sucks! The only thing that I can 100% of the time safely eat is bagels and cream cheese. Anything else is a roll of the dice as to whether or not I am going to be ill afterwards.

My doc is sending me for an ultrasound in the morning and then I have to go see her in the evening. My boss said just to take the day off.....again, which is nice and bad all at the same time, because I would rather be making the money, but feeling this icky, nothing is much fun right now.

I was just curious if any of you had gone through this. I am not looking for pity or pixie dust, just info really on first hand experience. Thanks.

I have never had a gallbladder ultrasound, but I can tell you that it is a non-invasive test that is just like having a uterine ultrasound. The tech will put some gloopy stuff on your upper tummy and place a transducer (wand like thing) on your tummy then move it around.

I am suprised you can eat cream cheese if your MD suspects GB (gallbladder) trouble - usually fats of any type make it flair up. The GB secrets bile which allows your stomach to digest fats. The long term restrictions will be decreased fat intake and most likely 3 tiny little scars on your tummy if the GB has to come out.

Good luck - maybe it is just a stone blocking the common bile duct - that would resolve or the stone broken using sound waves (lithotropsy).

Keep us posted!

When I say that I can eat cream cheese, it's like a very thin smear of cream cheese...more like just enough to say that it's there, but not enough to even totally cover the surface of the bread. Fat, OMG, it kills me and for some reason salads do too, I don't know if it's the dressing or the greens, but Jesus, it's painful afterwards.

I have been having pain between my shoulder blades and pain in the center to the right side of my upper abdomen like just under the ribs. I walk around nauseous and in pain for a good portion of the day. I have been skipping meals and eating pretty bland stuff in hopes that it was some passing bug, but after I ate the Chinese food the other night and ended up throwing up because I was in so much pain, Corey laid down the law, so I am finally doing something about it. I really don't have time to be dealing with a bad gallbladder right now.

And if anyone asks, being 40 kind of sucks. lol

Had mine out when I was 20...

I used to get random pains in my abdomen and they would come and go. Well one night after going out to dinner with some friends my stomach started to hurt. I took some antacids at their house and laid down on their couch. A few hours later I was still in horrible pain.

It was around 1:00 AM and I decided to drive home to at least lay down in my bed, well, I made it about 4 blocks and decided I couldn't drive home, so I drove to my parent's house about a block away at that point. They were at camp that weekend so, I crashed on their couch. Still couldn't stand the pain and about an hour later drove myself hunched over my steering wheel trying to shift the car in horrible pain.

The Urgent Care place did all sorts of tests and kept assuring me it was an ulcer. I drank a ton of PeptoBismo and some other odds and ends of stuff and finally they said they needed to send me to get an ultrasound.

I called my friend's mom and she brought me up to the hospital. Got there, got sick and started feeling a little better. Well then came the ultrasound. The individual was called in at 4:30 AM to do this for me and she put the gel on my abdomen and ran the ultrasound on my stomach, within about 2 seconds she found my gall bladder and started pointing out the solid masses you could see clearly on the ultrasound inside my gall bladder.

About an hour later met with my surgeon who looked over everything and put me on a fluid diet. Based on the shock my body went through with the pain, she decided it would be best to wait a week before doing surgery and kept me on a liquid diet for the remaining week.

The week went by with no issues, went to the hospital the day for surgery and checked in. They knocked me out and I woke up a few hours later. They were successful in doing my laproscopically (sp?), but the anethesia did a number on me and they kept having to keep me drugged to prevent me from having dry heaves. I do have four small scars, one just below my sternum, one at the top of my belly button, and two small ones on the right side of my stomach area. These are the typical placement areas for the laproscopic. One note, my step sister had hers out and she is much heavier then me (she is not my half sister, she is completely unrelated just to clarify this is not a heriditary thing in my family), and she had to have open surgery to remove hers. The heavier you are, there tends to be greater risk that laproscopic won't work.

About a week later I was feeling fine (they wouldn't release me back to work for 2 full weeks though) and ever since it has been great. I do notice that I tend to be more fat sensitive then before the surgery and the greasy foods go right through me more so. Otherwise, no real change in my diet or anything else.

For reference I was 20, I'm 5'10" and at the time around 155 - 160 lbs (and I'm male). They told me they really don't understand what causes some people to have issues with their gall bladder or not. There are some scenarios that put you more at risk like pregnancy and being heavy and then losing weight, but neither applied to me. Men are also less likely to have issues with their gall bladder, and it is fairly uncommon for someone at my age at the time to have issues.

If you have any questions, just let me know, PM is fine too.

Yeah, you are not the typical patient at all. I just read a quote that made me laugh.

Risk factors which can lead to increased incidence of gallstones include the "Four Fs:" fat, female, fertile, and flatulent.

Fat: I prefer fluffy
Female: Last I checked
Fertile: Theoretically, but untested
Flatulent: Check my tag for confirmation on that!

I think we are just waiting for Ultra Sound results at this point folks.

My girlfriend got her galbladder out after much suffering and was relieved after the surgery. She recovered very quickly...she even had me take her out to walk the next day!
You'll be great :]

Good luck!!! :thumbsup2

:rotfl:

Seems like you have a good attitude about the whole thing. I'm sure you will be fine. A friend had her gallbladder removed and it was a relatively easy procedure and recovery process. Hope you are feeling better soon!

So THATS when my DH has - gallbladder disease!! That totally explains so many things, like that fact that he gets SO SICK after eating anything that isn't boiled chicken, and the fact that the man farts more than 100 people eating beans at a camp out! :rotfl: But seriously, I'm going to talk to him about it and see what he has to say. I know he has an ulcer, but this could be a factor too.

Well, the test is done and I have an inside track on getting the results, which were normal. I am glad that it's not the gallbladder, but what the heck?

I go to the doc at 3pm. :confused3

That's why I was hoping the results would be conclusive! Not good. I hope they can figure out what is wrong! :wizard: I'll be thinking about you!

Oh man, I hope they figure it out soon for you. That's rough and annoying. Did they rule out kidney problems?

I went to the doc and she said that I have every classic symptom of gallbladder disease. She is kind of confused by the Ultra Sound results too, so tomorrow I have a HIDA scan where they pump me full of radioactive dye and scan me. That should be much more telling. I get nothing to eat or drink again until after the procedure at 11am tomorrow. I am not sure if I am going to work afterwards, it depends on how icky I feel. I have been put on a bland, low fat diet until we know what the heck is going on.

New wrinkle.....
I was looking up info on the test that I am supposed to have tomorrow and realized it's not the old fashioned HIDA scan, but a HIDA dynamic. The addition of dynamic seems to mean that it's an MRI procedure. I can't have MRI's due to some metal that holds part of my leg together from an injury several years ago. I think that my doc was not 100% thinking today when she ordered this. Had I realized it was an MRI type procedure, I would have gotten an order for the other procedure. Now, I have no idea if I can have the test tomorrow or not. :headache:

Well, crap! Why is everything always so complicated? :headache:
At least since you aren't supposed to have the scan until 11 AM you have time to phone and verify that they really do have to use an MRI, and if they do, they can call your physician for alternate orders. I hope they are able to figure something out before we get into the holiday weekend!! :wizard:

Ugh! How frustrating! Hope you get some answers today. Good luck!

From what I have been able to understand this morning sans coffee, food, or water, there is a way to do the HIDA, which is a nuclear medicine procedure, with either PET or MRI. I called the hospital radiology department and they said that I would get the PET kind, since I have the hardware in my leg. So, at 11:00 today, I am off to get nuked and scanned.

Answers are coming, just not quickly enough.

It's unofficially official. I listened to the dictation from the radiology report line and the ejection fraction is only 10%. Normal would be at least 50% or higher....sometimes as low as 35% if there are no symptoms. I have a feeling that I am due to see a surgeon soon, but a lot of this is going to have to be worked around Corey's schedule. Until then, I am going to have to behave and avoid anything fatty, spicy, fried, or high in fiber. I am thinking that I might emerge from all of this with a hatred for white rice and chicken soup. lol

I am waiting to hear back from my doc on the report to know what the official next step is.

Officially, it's got to come out. I have to get some bloodwork and make an appointment to see a surgeon that Corey knows from her days when she used to work in hospitals. I am on a bland diet until we can make the plan to take it out.

The worst part is having to have surgery. The best part, of course, is that it's fixable.

Fixable is good! I hope they can get you scheduled quickly and that the surgery and recovery are as easy as possible!! :wizard:
