Tequila, Dole Whips & Tonga Toast: Celebrating 50 years! Read all about it!

The Quest for Tonga Toast

I have to admit, I'm almost a little sad getting to this part being the 3rd of my TR trio's name because it means I'm nearing the end of our fantasic week at WDW. I just discovered the DISboards 2 years ago when planning our last trip but I had no idea about trip reports & writing one really does help to relive all the fun of a WDW trip.

But there's still a good 33% of our trip left for me to share so let me get started doing just that :surfweb:

After a very enjoyable Saturday evening, we were all snug in our beds reasonably early. Still, DS wanted to stay up & play on his electronic pacifier a little. DH was still full from all the food & drink from his time spent at the Tusker House bar & eating all those Africian themed foods & sauses he doesn't usually get to have at home. Fully relaxed from the pool & movie, he had drifted off into a contented nights sleep. We will not discuss all the noise coming from his side of the room :rotfl:

Me, I sat watching channel 96 on the room TV, the channel that has all the disney cartoons, those classics like steamboat Willie. I'm an overgrown kid :cloud9:

Tomorrow was our last MK day, but it was also another late night EMH. DS made a point of making sure his dad realized it as we were all getting ready for bed.

I was proud of them both. They both had a plan, I must be rubbing off on them :goodvibes They went something like this:

DS plan: Stay up now & play electronic game until tired.

Tomorrow: Sleep in (of course)

Lay around some. Play electronic game. Eat snacks/b-fast in room.

Definately eat cheesburger & fries from food court.

Maybe swim. If not, lay around more & play game.

Go to MK in late afternoon, when I feel like it.

Stay until the end of EMH.

DH's plan: Sleep now.

Sleep in tomorrow.

Get coffee from food court.

Watch DS sleep while watching sports highlights.

Go to pool & work on finishing my beers.

Try to delay going to MK until it's time for dinner

:lmao:

So as I'm laying there, I like the guys plan about sleeping in since since we've toured well at MK, not to mention our last day at MK was EXHAUSTING with the touring & the luau & the pirates cruise & the EMH......

But suddently it occurs to me that I haven't tried the TONGA TOAST I had read about on the DISboards :scared1:

But then I think, I CAN go to the POLY's counter service, it serves until 10:30. That'll be perfect cause I can go just for that. I'll be in & out before the guys know I've left.

Next morning, I wake fully rested at 9am, jump in the shower & get ready. I was so glad our room had one of those curtains to block the light from the bathroom vanity to the bedroom area.

I'm just about ready to go, finalizing the taping up of my feet when DH looks at me from bed. Our conversation went something like this.

DH: What are you doing?

ME: Shh, you'll wake DS

DH: That boy would sleep through a hurricane.

ME: I'm going to go get some TONGA TOAST

DH: Some what?

ME: Tonga Toast

DH: What's Tonga Toast? Can you bring me some coffee?

ME: Something I read about on the DISboards. I have to go to the Polynesian Resort to get it.

DH: The where?

ME: Polynesian, where we went to the luau.

DH: You're going there now?

ME: I heard it's really good. I'll probably go over to the MK for a minute & see stuff you & DS don't care to see.

DH: You're insane.

ME: Love you too. See you by noon, I promise. We'll go swimming.

DH: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

He rolls over & I leave. It's sunny but really cloudy. I fill my mug at the food court, I kid you not, the minute I get outside in the line a bus to MK pulls up :woohoo:

A quick stop to ASMovies & off we go. It takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the MK bus stop. About 10 minutes into our ride, it literally POURS buckets of rain. Mothers all over the bus start pulling out yellow ponchos & putting kids in them.

I felt sorry for the kids. When it's humid those plastic things are so miserable. But I guess it's better than getting drenched. It was really coming down.

By the time we arrived at MK, the rain abruptly stops.

pixiedust: I say a silent prayer.

Everyone walks towards the MK to go through bag check, I head to the left to catch the boat over to the GF & Poly. One is pulling up the moment I arrive. I'm having fantasic luck with transporation today, with any luck that rain will hold off.

I took some pictures on the boat. Check out the skies on my journey.

Looking back at the Magic Kingdom from sea
WDW2010289.jpg

You can tell from the picture how overcast the sky was. Also there is another boat docked just like the one I was riding, only that boat was going to the WL.

Now we're in open water, there's the monorail track coming from GF to MK. Isn't it neat how the sky is half light, half dark
WDW2010290.jpg

I thought this was pretty, the cloudy grey blue sky against the end of the Grand Floridian & a monorail on the track
WDW2010291.jpg

The wedding chapel at the GF
WDW2010292.jpg

And the POLY straight ahead!
WDW2010293.jpg

About then, our boat driver makes an announcement, "Folks, don't know what your plans are but from the looks of that sky, I'm going to recommend you take cover as soon as you can after we dock. And I wouldn't take too long to do it either."

So I look back at the GF, & what to my wondering eyes should appear but another storm's a brewin'
WDW2010294.jpg

 Drive fast man! Well, our driver wasted no time getting to the POLY, quickly got the boat docked & told us to enjoy our stay but hurry inside.

Walking briskly towards the POLY I hoped I'd make it before I got drenched. The wind was stirring up & blowing in all directions. I was about halfway there when I started feeling sprinkles.

Now I'm no runner, but I wasn't walking anymore :yay:

I barely made it to a door - first one I could get to - and BUCKETS started coming from the sky!

But hey, I made it!

And I was at the counter service, Captain Hook's. And it wasn't 10:30 yet :yay:

So I ordered my TONGA TOAST - with a side of bacon.

Then I did the unthinkable while waiting for my order.

I used my mug & refilled my coffee :rolleyes1
Hey, it's only Nescafe...stop judging!

My food was ready quickly. But there was NO ROOM at the inn! Not a place to sit. The horror of having this anticipated breakfast & no place to eat.

I spy a lady alone with 3 extra seats. I ask if I can join her. So sorry, she's got 3 coming.

Grrrr

Not a single seat available.

Over to the other side, I spy 3 people at a table with one empty seat. The empty seat is beside an older lady - she looks like a grandma.

Grandma's are really nice.

Could it be?

SCORE! Grandma WELCOMES me to join her son & granddaughter. ANd what a lovely family they were. We had the nicest conversation, sat right in the corner with windows all around. It was pouring cats & dogs outside.

But I was contend to sit with this lovely family & enjoy my TONGA TOAST!

It was soooo good. But I didn't take a picture :sad2:

But natebenma has promised to post one so hopefully we'll see one in the morning :goodvibes

After the family of three left, another couple came over to claim the spot. Imagine their surprise when I didn't get up

They were the matriarch & patriarch of their family. There were about 10 of them vacationing together. Grandma & grandpa had the good sense to stay at the resort for breakfast that morning.

So I finished my lovely breakfast of TONGA TOAST with this couple. They had never heard of the Festival of the Lion King show over at the AK. I hope they enjoyed it :lovestruc

Up Next: Here we go! Keeping ahead of the rain.

Hello natebenma, I really appreciate you putting the finishing touches on my my TR

Now I know to take a picture of the food on the next trip

Do you get the strawberry compote when the Tonga Toast is from CC?

tongatoast2-1.jpg

And a bonus picture- This is what I crave. This may be my favorite thing available in the whole World. Maybe even the whole world.

Pineapple Macadamia Pancakes!

Now, you have another quest for your next trip! (Kona, not Captain Cooks)

Now I know to take a picture of the food on the next trip

As I continue to work on my trip report, and having provided a couple of food pictures for yours, I have come up with the title for my next trip report, even though I don't have any upcoming Disney vacations planned:

Is it wrong that I have more photos of food than my kids?

:rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2:

That's a good one!

ANd thank you for posting the picture of the Tonga Toast. It looked just like the one I had at Captain Cook's. I drool just thinking about it. When I first heard it had bananas in the middle, I didn't think it sounded so great but boy was I wrong.

The strawberries did not come with it in the food court. Matter of fact, that brought to memory when I sat down with the grandma's family, I was so excited to have arrived & try it, as I was getting ready for my first bite the grandma said, 'You might like it even better if you get some maple syrup, dear." I had forgot the maple syrup, silly me! Good thing I was sitting with her :goodvibes

I think I'm going to have to take your advice & plan a b-fast at KONA's for our next trip. Man oh man those pancakes looked good too!

I didn't get around to commenting on your post yesterday.

I love me some solo time at the World. It is nice to spend some time doing things at your own pace and enjoying things that the others in your family might not appreciate. Like giant airy bread stuffed with banana!

Wow, great pixie dust on narrowly avoiding the storms. Boy, the clouds look ominous and the pictures are gorgeous. Especially the one with the dark cloud over the GF.

How nice that you joined the family. Sounds like you both may have gotten something out of the encounter.

Now I need tonga toast! :)

You MUST try it :goodvibes

My next post continues a little solo time & those storms chased me all morning!

Getting to meet others enhances a WDW vacation IMO. I look for opportunities to talk to others, it just turned out I was more at the mercy of the kindness of strangers that particular morning. Yes indeedy I was fortunate :cloud9:

Glad you stayed dry - sounds like you definitely had timing on your side!
Although next time, I'd play it safe and take the monorail with skies like that! :goodvibes

Here we go! Keeping ahead of the storm!

After the delightful breakfast of Tonga Toast at Captain Hook's, it was still raining but not buckets. Therefore a boat ride back over to the Magic Kingdom would not do so I walked upstairs & through the POLY lobby (say that fast 10 times  ) to catch the monorail.

One was just leaving as I arrived, but alas, the monorail comes frequently so not to worry. I took this oppotunity to talk to a CM positioned at the monorail. He assured me in his best guessitmate of FLorida weather that the worst of the storm was behind us & that usually it poured like this in the afternoons. Shortly another monorail arrived which I boarded. One short stop at the GF & I was exiting the monorail at the Magic Kingdom stop.

By now it was nearing 11am so I decided since I was here, I might as well go in to MK - of course, what a surprise.

I had 2 goals in mind but for the sake of my feet, decided to take the train over to Mickey's Toontown. It wasn't exactly raining anymore but the air had a drizzly, humid wet feel to it. So the train would spare my sore feet & also keep my head dry. I called DH to check in.

ME: Hi, whatcha doing?

DH: Drinking coffee & watching sports highlights.

ME: Is DS awake?

DH: You're kidding right? It's not afternoon yet.

ME: I'm in MK, I'll be about an hour, okay?

DH: That's fine, DW. You shouldn't lie though. We both know you are not leaving there before noon.

ME: Okay, I'll plan to get home before 1pm & we can go swimming.

DH: Have fun.

About then the conductor was calling out "ALL ABOARD" and off we went.

So we're traveling behind what I know is the adventureland area & I'm wondering just how many snakes are inside that thick greenery that surrounds the Jungle Cruise waters

Then I hear someone talking about the pretend alligators that had been attacked by real alligators :scared1:

I snap out of my scary thoughts & peek inside the window that overlooks the steamboat with all the happy chickens singing ZipadeeDoDa at the end of Splash Mtn. After a short stop in Frontierland, the train pulls out of the station to continue our journey. In this part of the trip there is a little bit more to see as most of you who have rode the train know. COuld not see a bit of the fantasyland expansion for a sneak peak though :confused3

After embarking upon Mickey's Toontown, I exited the train & did a very quick walk by of some of my favorite sites here.

DS first favorite WDW coaster!
WDW2010299.jpg

I remember the days of doing the Toontown "Rope Drop" so we could ride this over & over. One year we just missed riding the first train with Goofy, who had taken a seat beside a lucky young lady in the front car
WDW2010298.jpg

Minnie's house
WDW2010297.jpg

At least the rain had stopped, although you can see it was still pretty wet.

Next door, Mickey's house!
WDW2010296.jpg

I didn't go through the houses but it was nice to have a look at them. I continued in the direction of FantasyLand, intend on getting a FP for Peter Pan's flight. 2 nights ago this attraction still had a 30 minutes stand by wait at 2am  & this being our last day at MK, I was pretty sure after the warm reception given Winnie the Pooh by my 2 guys if I didn't see it now, it wasn't going to happen this trip. But at least if I got a FP now, I'd be able to ride it later, if not yet this morning.

So I arrive at Peter Pan & the standby line is about 45 minutes so I FP it. So debating what to do with myself it starts to drizzle again. IASW is closed for refurbishments so the closest shelter is going to be Mickey's Philharmagic. But wait, over there the line looks protected at Snow White's scary adventure, so why not?

I am walking as fast as my legs will carry me, it's drizzling bigger drops now but I make it to the Snow White covered line in time to wait standby about 20 minutes & watch the rain come down again :upsidedow But at least I'm staying dry!

It's almost my turn now!
WDW2010301.jpg

And here we go (wait, that's Peter's line)
WDW2010302.jpg

I think I've rode Snow White once before, when DS was 6 - no way would he tolerate this now :lmao: so I'm glad I rode it again. I adore the 7 dwarfs but I had forgotten that this attraction does have some rather morbid scenes. Especially when SnowWhite is laid to rest, waiting upon Prince Charming. Thank goodness for the happy ending princess:

After SnowWhite, it is still raining lightly but my FP window has not yet arrived. So having no rain gear I place my purse over my head & carefully run over to Mickey's Philharmagic. It's not like I needed an excuse to see this show again. I could watch it over & over if they'd just let me sit in there. I truely love this show, the smells, the special effects & seeing all the classic disney characters in the movie.

Now there is a scene in the movie where Peter Pan appears & announces, "HERE WE GO" & off we go. Nothing to it, as Donald says :goodvibes

After returning the 3D glasses & exiting the theatre, there is still some drizzle but my FP window has opened up for Peter Pan.

So now, finally & truely Here we go!
WDW2010303.jpg

The joys of riding in a ship over London. I wish I'd had one of my guys with me :lovestruc

Thinking of my guys, it occured to me we had not yet toured the Haunted Mansion with DH yet. So after leaving Peter Pan, since it WAS on the way, I decided to go visit the happy haunts. Afterall the wait was only 5 minutes.

The wait was so short, I barely saw Leota "looking" at me here
WDW2010304.jpg

I explained to my hitch hiking ghost that my DH knew me pretty well because it was now obvious my touring had lasted longer than an hour, no way would I be back to ASMusic by 1:00. ANyway, it was time for my second goal of my solo tour, & that was to take a lesson in American History. So walking to the Hall of Presidents I was delighted to find that I had about 2 minutes before the next show.

The theatre was not crowded & I was able to get a great seat positioned near front & center. There were a few people to either side of me but nobody in front of me. I settled in for the show. Things were going nicely until I became aware of excessive whispering to the left behind me.

So I'm ignoring it a while but then after seeing other people glaring back, I sneak a peek. There's a man with a small boy, about 4. Evidently dad is trying to explain the show to junior.

Oh, well then that's okay :cutie:

Except he NEVER stopped :sad2: Now I have a decision to make. Do I get up to move & disrupt everyone around me or just grin & bear it?

It's not just me, people keep glaring back at them cause we're all kinda stuck together although spread out. The dad is completely oblivious to his noise level.

GGrrrrr

So I do what any sane person would do.

I stick my finger in my left ear :rotfl:

Well, it helped! At least I can hear the program from my right ear louder than those 2 talking near my left ear.

I have to give myself & everyone around me credit. Nobody confronted the inconsiderate slob with a sarcastic remark, other than a kid a few rows up who loudly "Shh'd" the slobs direction.

Well, this was one of those rare times when a kid acts rude it was kinda called for :rotfl2: The kids mom evidently thought so since she didn't correct him.

ANyway, finger stuck in left ear I did enjoy the show. ANd happy to say it's all updated with all our presidents. I think this is an amazing presentation but not nearly exciting enough to excite DS so I'm glad I was able to see it.

Having seen Peter Pan & Hall of Presidents, it was time to head back to ASMusic to meet up with the family. But I saw no reason why I shouldn't exit via adventureland. This would allow me to indulge myself in another of those delightful Dole Whips :woohoo:

Dole Whip in hand, I'm really now exiting the park. But on the way out, I encounter something on Main Street that peaks my interest. So what do you think I had to indulge while finishing up my Dole Whip? It was a little after 1pm now.....

Coming up: Double 4-somes!

You've had a wonderful time at the Magic Kingdom all by yourself! I sometimes wish I had two or three hours by myself in Disney.

Glad you stayed dry - sounds like you definitely had timing on your side!

You are probably right about that ;)

You've had a wonderful time at the Magic Kingdom all by yourself! I sometimes wish I had two or three hours by myself in Disney.

Oh I miss having my guys but they aren't insane about seeing as much as I like to so it works for us :goodvibes DH doesn't like getting home from vacation feeling exhausted, which is usually how I feel

]This was a 3 part shot. First, you took the lime top off, rolled it in the peppery spice on the left & licked it, then you picked up the lime, drank the shot of tequila inside, squeezed the lime for a slurp, then followed up with the salsa tomatoey spicy liquid on the right. Man oh man, that was fun! I highly recommend it if you like tequila!

Hey what is that drink called? My hubby would love that drink! I love reading your TR, Thanks for sharing :)

Sounds like a nice morning (and early afternoon...). I had some solo time on the last night of my trip and I have to say, it was enjoyable!!! You had a nice mix of activities- Peter Pan's ride is just plain awesome!

Haven't figured out what you had as a treat after the Dole Whip, but some fudge might hit the spot on the way out.

:welcome: Welcome to the DISboards & thanks for posting in my trip report :goodvibes

I can't remember what they called that 3 part concoction at Cava De Tequilla, but if you enter the Mexican pavalion, the bar is over to the right just before you get to the check in for the San Angel Inn. If you ask them for the 3 part shot of tequila served inside the lime, they will know exactly what you're talking about!! And they told us in the restaurant that they serve it there as well.

I found it more fun to do the shot at the bar though :thumbsup2

Hmmm, fudge would've been a good treat but what I indulged in had to do with viewing, not eating....

Double 4-somes

I always get temporary memory loss after I'm touring & enjoying myself at any WDW park :rolleyes1 And having accomplished what I had had set out to do that morning, instead of thinking about taking care of my sore feet, before making the turn down Main St. to head out I think to myself, oh why not pick up a FP real quick from Space Mtn? Then DS can ride it when we all come back to the park :cutie:

I know that is spoiling him but I can't help it :lovestruc

So after picking up the FP I can now leave MK satisfied. Strolling down Main Street finishing up my Dole Whip float, I see what turns out to be the first 4-some of the day.

It's the Main St. barbershop quartet!
WDW2010305.jpg

It's one of those moments you just have to stop & enjoy. These guys are so much fun to watch :thumbsup2 What a great way to top off the morning.

Thankful to have avoided getting drenched over the course of the morning (you can see how wet Main St. still was) I head out to catch my bus back to ASMusic. It wasn't a long wait & I was back at our room shortly.

By then DS was up & they both had on their bathing suits. DH was surprized I didn't get caught in any of the storms, said it had rained off & on all morning. But it had finally cleared up to the point it was going to be a good day to do some afternoon swimming.

BUt first lunch!

Now the all stars food courts are truely not my choice for a meal, but DS loves their made to order flame grilled burgers. That sounded good to all of us so we all had a burger & fries combo, with dessert no doubt being on the DDP. Not at all South Beach diet friendly in the least  Oh well, I can get back on track with that next week :confused3

After lunch we spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing & being lazy at the pool. It was nice :goodvibes

Mousekeeping made various towel critters that kept accumulating in our room & I can't believe I forgot to take a picture of all of them.

These were the first 2, I forgot to get pictures of several more that joined them during our week stay
WDW2010288.jpg

It was getting close to 5pm and the guys agreed it was time to head out to the Magic Kingdom. We had dinner planned & that is where we'd be meeting our second 4-some of the day.

Can you guess who those 4 were?

Coming up: A proper 50th birthday celebration

What a wonderful mother you are getting a Space Mountain fastpass for the son. I would have done the same thing. Never hurts to score a few points with the teenager.

I have a feeling I know which foursome you will be seeing but I won't shout it out. I get in all sorts of trouble with the family when I shout out the answers on Wheel of Fortune.:rotfl:

Just started and now I'm going back to catch up! Can't wait to read all about it!!! :goodvibes

Thank-you. Oh, why not guess? Now, you'd only get in trouble with us shouting out answers on Wheel of Fortune if you only give "part" of the answer :lmao: but a whole answer...totally acceptable in my book ;)

Just started and now I'm going back to catch up! Can't wait to read all about it!!! :goodvibes

:welcome: Glad to have you reading along. Sorry I've been missing a few days, we've had a lot of "stuff" going on at our house but I will be writing more later tonight or for sure tomorrow :thumbsup2

:wave2: WELCOME!

I'm so excited to share our most amazing week at WDW as we celebrated my 50th birthday  DS's 14th birthday :yay: and DH's & I's 18th wedding anniversary  Yep, they all happen in the same week of August & we wanted to celebrate big!
]

Hi Twiddles, doing a great job and wanted to say we had a similar situation with the holiday. Thanksgiving was allways a friggin nightmare starting with my mom's brother, his birthday was nov. 22, mom was next on the 25th, followed by mine the 26th, and ending with my folks anniversary on the 27th. And I can guarantee that to this day when my wife Smidgy asks me what I want for my birthday dinner the answer is NOT going to be "Gee, a turkey dinner sounds good."
