My best friend from college and I both have similar-aged daughters (7,7,6,5), and (since we live in different parts of the country) we try to visit each other at least once per year. We are both outdoorsy types, and our kids love to camp. As an affordable way to do WDW, we thought about tenting at FW for 5-6 nights at the end of May next year.

Questions regarding this:

Is it crazy to bring our tents/minimal supplies on the plane and take ME to FW? This would, of course, mean we'd have no vehicle during our stay.

Is it too hot at the end of May to bring relatively young children? Are we going to be regretting this idea around Day 2?? :-)

Having never stayed at FW, how are the amenities for tenters? Comfort station, walk to buses from campsites, dining, etc.?

THANKS for any advice, assistance, etc.!!

Jen :-)

I suggest that you read this great trip report:

I Survived My First Camping Trip!

This TR was written by a young woman who flew and tent-camped at the Fort with one of her girlfriends. This was in early June of this year, and they not only survived, I would dare say they had a great time.

It will most likely be hot in late May at the Fort, but it isn't as hot as it will be in the Summer.

Have done it before. It works well!!

If at all possible, fly Southwest. They allow 2 pieces of checked luggage per person for free.

So for 6 of you, that is 600 lbs of "stuff" that you could set up a GREAT tent city with.

Fort Wilderness is great for tent campers. The comfort stations are the cleanest and nicest in the industry. You have ELECTRICITY, water, and CABLE at your site. The sites are level and large and plenty of room to set up whatever tents and awnings you desire.

Thanks TCD - that was a great report, and we'll be able to learn a lot from it if we decide to do this. One thing we might consider would be a November trip instead of May to avoid the heat.....food for thought!
