We will be tenting at FW in August. We are thinking of bringing a grilled cheese maker, a small George Foreman Grill, and a small hotplate. Does anyone have any suggestions as to possible (simple) meals, or other cooking implements that might be better? We will (probably) not have a fridge, but will have a car to get groceries. Any tips would be appreciated! :goodvibes

I would say 1st of all do your shopping at either Publix or Winn-Dixie. Goodings is closest but very expensive. I would suggest bringing a table to set up cooking stuff on. I recently bought a 6' buffet table that folds in half and becomes very small. It's like 2'X6' but will fit in a tight spot upon folding. It is a "COSCO" brand and was at Wal-Mart.

My DD and I did a lot of cooking last time down. If you have an electric skillet bring it. You can cook so many things like eggs, bacon and french toast. There is a thread about a checklist. Print it out and decide what you think you'll need. Bring an extension cord and a multi plug strip. I found an extension cord that has 3 plugs on it and it eliminates another item to forget lol.

You can save so much on food when camping. I bring charcoal and cook burgers, chicken etc. If you like toppings on burgers I found cutting them up at home and using tupperware type containers to store them in is easiest. I have a tt but I bring a cooler full of drinks on bottom which leaves some top storage for extra items and leaves my fridge with more room. I know others will give you some good ideas as well.

A little off topic, but when did you graduate from RPI? I am class of '79.

Thanks for the tips Stacktester. I like the skillet idea! Toppings for the burgers would also be a good idea huh? :cool1: Any other ideas?

RPI you can't go wrong with a skillet. You can get one for $30 or less anywhere. As far as burger toppings go, I like to cut my stuff up at home but I'm a tight wad and I usually get condiments from restaurants I go to. Not a bunch at one time but a little here and there. It's better because I tend to throw many bottles away of mayo and mustard because we never use it all. I would love to see camping size condiments at Camping World or Wal-Mart but haven't yet.

Of course he likes the skillet idea, but I am the one who has to cook!:rolleyes1 Are there easy things to prepare for the skillet? Or do they take a lot of ingrediants and effort? On vacation it is not fun to cook that much!:cool1:

I love my skillet. It's easy to make pancakes, bacon, eggs and french toast on. Also easy to clean at the end of a meal.

I recommend the pancakes (if you do them) with the batter that requires an egg and oil instead of the water only kind.:thumbsup2

I have also found that if you use some veggie oil on the skillet before you put the batter on it does not stick at all.

Goof luck.

I'm big on crockpots. Put ingredients in am, come home in pm to dinner. Some tenters put a milk crate over the crockpot when they're at the parks.

Is there just some sorta tenting thread? I would like to read what it is like tenting at disney. And which months are best? Not too hot or cold and inexpensive. Not buggy possibly?!?

I just bought an egg and muffin cooker from Wal-Mart (It has Paula Deen on the front,) but I've seen the same cooker made by the same company at Target without Paula. I tried it out this weekend and it worked so well. (Granted we were at POP and not at FW, but it would be just the same.) It poaches an egg at the same time it toasts an english muffin. I just added a slice of cheese and it was perfect. It also makes hard boiled eggs, but I haven't tried that yet since it's easier to just buy the pre-peeled ones at Publix. We bought the muffin/egg cooker specifically for travel, but it works so well I plan to make it a regular in the kitchen.
