Hello everyone,

I'm considering surprising my sister with a trip to Disney on her birthday in October. As i'm already doing a trip in January, I need to really watch my pennies. Therefore, we are camping lovers and i'm considering going this route.

Has anyone ever tent camped at FW? What was it like? Pros/Cons?

It's MARVELOUS, simply MARVELOUS.
Been going to Fort Wilderness since the 70's (yes, last century) and have always tent camp up until 2 months ago when the move up to pure luxury, a pop up camper, was accomplished.
However, tent camping is quite nice. The sites are clean, fairly level and the area to pitch your tent is firm enough to hold the stakes nicely and large enough to pitch several tents and a screen house.
Each site has electric, (30 amp-1 outlet and 20 amp-4 outlets), so bring extention cords for frig, TV, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, radio, etc.
DID I MENTION THIS REALLY ROUGH CAMPING :rotfl2:
Water is also provided and if you can believe it, cable TV and internet access (for a daily fee) are also available on each site. Additionally, you have a nice picnic table which you can move if you wish and a grill.
The restrooms, called comfort stations are air conditioned and beautiful. They have tiled walls and floors, good lighting and hot showers. They are kept very clean as well. In the center of each comfort station is an area that has washers, dryers, a large sink for washing items out and I believe an ice machine.
Lastly, October is a great time to come. Although it can still be awfully warm during the day, the nights tend to be very pleasant.
Hope this helps. You are definitely in the right forum to get the best information possbile on Fort Wilderness from all these great folks.

Aww, thank you SO MUCH for the great information! I'm really struggling between a camping trip to WDW or a four day Disney cruise. There are so many benefits to both. The cruise is $200 less, but even before our first trip to WDW, we are so in love with it. Do we do parks, or beach? Aaahhh, tough choices!!!

We've never been to WDW period! Our first trip is on January 19th and we are VERY excited! As children we went to Disneyland a few times, but it has been over 14 years since our last trip there. So, very "green" to the whole experience.

When you are down later this month , take the boat over from the MK & check out FW. It will be worth an hour or so of your time to see for yourself !! Your best bet IMO would be loop 1500. Its a partial hook-up (cheapest) & near the Meadows area & Newly "Re-Habed" pool.:woohoo: :woohoo:

camping at the Fort is far from roughing it! just a warning though...once you go once....you are addicted and can't wait to go back....I just left on Dec. 20th and I'm already ready to go back!!!

Ooooo, I am getting really excited! I think we're definitely going to do it and will try for loop 1500. We're going to see Hoop Dee Doo this trip; is it easy to make it over to the camping area from there? I would love to check it out this January.

we did Hoop De Doo this time.....easy to get to if ya have a golf cart...just ride down and park in the parking area in front of Trails End then walk to the Hoop which is left of that....I did it this year but won't go back...the food was cold and not tasty at all...I feel like it was money wasted but glad we did finally experience it. I liked the Luau better...food was better there too but last time we went there my chicken was also cold....I just got off the phone with one of my DGF that went on the trip with us...and we both agreed the food at most places we went was not as good as it has been in the past and next trip we might just stick with counter service meals.Hard to mess up salads and grilled chicken sandwiches..can be done but at less expense lol

If you are at the Hoop De Doo and want to check out Loop 1500, just hop on a Yellow Outpost bus and get off at Loop 1500. The Meadows area is right across the street!! Great loop!!

Also, if you want to check out Loop 2000 (the other tent loop), hop on the Purple bus from the Settlement bus stop and take a look there. The loop is a little bit isolated, but has really large sand areas and is better suited for large tent setups.

Perfect, since you are going to the Hoop De Doo, come early and as clkelley suggested take the bus tour of the campground. If you go by boat, you will get off at the Settlement area where the Hoop De Doo is located. The bus stop is just past the HDD at the end of the walkway.
If you go by bus from your resort, you will unload at the Outpost and then you can take the Purple tour or the Yellow tour. I would even get off at the Meadows Trading Post and take a walk around the area. Buses to the Settlement come by on a regular basis.
We always stayed in 1500 loop, aka Cottontail Curl, but last year ended up in the 2000 loop. I was disappointed at first, but LOVE it now and request it over 1500 loop because of the size of the sites. As clkelley said, 1500 is located much closer to activities, but if you rent a golf cart.....you are exactly, in Mickey time, 3 minutes and 22 seconds away from the Meadows Trading Post from the 2000 loop. (Mickey time means you have to add a little time usually  ).
How exciting for you guys!!! Have a wonderful trip.

I know this map is somewhere on this forum, but to save time, here is a map of Fort Wilderness. This should help you get a good layout of THE FORT.

The fabulous Fort Wilderness:yay: :yay:

Oh my goodness, you guys are SO HELPFUL! If this is any indication of the kind of people we'll be camping by, i'm stoked. :)

Thank you for all your help, and i'll be sure to keep you informed as plans develop. I'm also certain i'll be on here a lot with all my questions! :thumbsup2

Yep, campers are the greatest. :thumbsup2

Oh Laura, you and your sisters are going to have such a fantastic time! I'm so excited for you!! :cheer2:

We just had our first stay at Fort Wilderness in December and we are hooked, so much so that we are going for another 9 days beginning the end of this month!

My best advice for you for touring the parks is remember: No matter what you may or may not get around to doing-you will have a wonderful time and enjoy what you DO have time to get to!

Everyone has their own plan of touring that works for them, but here's what worked for us and maybe you can get some ideas about what would work for y'all:

1) We always did 2 parks a day to split things up a bit, with a couple hour rest break in between parks. We felt that MK was too many rides (for a one day-steady diet), MGM-too many shows, EPCOT-too much walking, and AK didn't really take us a full day-especially since it usually closes around 5 or so.
2) Know which days are the "peak" days for each park, and avoid that park on that particular day.
3) Try not to rush too much or you'll burn yourself out and have a bunch of memories of all the rushing you did instead of the fun!
4) If you have a day to spare, take a day off in the middle of your vacation to just hang out and rest a bit.
5) Save pretty much all souvenir buying for the last day then...the evening before that "last day" , shop a bit in the huge Disney section at the Wal-mart near Disney. It will stretch your souvenir dollars!
6) Save a day as a "greatest hits" day-where you just go back to each park just to ride your most favorite rides or see your most favorite shows, one last time.

Like I said, those are just things that work for our family and what works for you may be totally different. :)
Good Luck and enjoy planning your trip...planning it is half the fun!! :goodvibes

What wonderful advice! Thank you so much for the helpful tips. I hooked up with a subscription to TGM and hope his tips will help with this upcoming trip. I've scheduled a few hours each day to go back to the hotel for downtime. I'm hopeful this will keep all three of us sisters happy; we do like our quiet time!

I didn't know the Wal-mart nearby has such a large section of Disney stuff. My friend from FL is coming over one day to take us to the outlet malls; i'll have to convince her to give us a ride over to Wally's.

I look forward to maybe meeting some of my new camping buddies next October. Thank you again for being such a friendly and helpful group. I'm already looking at tents for the Fall and other camping supplies. My old tent got pretty beaten up on our cross country trip; time for a new one!

CindyF's suggestion of taking some down time in the middle of the day is invaluable.
That time is well spent just relaxing, :happytv:
taking a nap, :cloud9:
checking emails, :surfweb:
dip in the pool, :cool2:
watch a movie on TV, popcorn::
whatever you do to relax.

Truly, WORDS OF WISDOM.
