I bought a couple of template packages at Michael's. they are the purple Westrim Craft products where you get 10 templates in a package.

I tried cutting out the shapes and alphabets with an exacto knife, but that was a bad idea.

So, I trace them with a pencil and cut with scissors.
Is this the proper way to cut using templates or is there a tool I should be using with them in order to give a smoother cut?

I don't really know what kind of templates (like the plan a page ones?), but when I use shape templates, I trace onto the back of the paper or picture and then cut out that way. Hope this helps!
