Tell me your favorite and least favorite dishes (any ship, any meal)

Are the Mango Mountain Hike and Morning Tugboats smoothies? And are they from a MDR or the buffet?

Yes. The description on the menu is deceiving. We didn't order them the first two cruises because we thought it was a fruit and yogurt plate. One morning DH wanted fruit and yogurt and we were happily surprised. Now all of us (DD included) have them each morning on our sailings. They are in the MDR and Goofy's galley. I haven't seen them at the buffet.

My fav's are:
Mushroom risotto - great in MDR but better in Palo's
Any soufflé...
Crunchy walnut cake
Chilled strawberry soup - Palo's brunch
Lamb chop
The only thing I like on pirate night is the pineapple - we go to Palo's
Escargot
Most of the soups

Not fav:
Popcorn soup and asparagus soup
Steak unless in Palo's - to me they taste like inexpensive cuts of meat but I am married to a cattle ranching family
Most of the fruity custard desserts - usually too bland for me
Pizza - yuck
Short ribs - not a lot of meat

Most things are good just not great. Also, I have been blessed to go ona few cruises and maybe I just need a menu change. Next cruise, I am going to try one new thing each meal to see if I can find some new favs.

I've noticed that food reviews for DCL are all over the map. Even a guidebook raves about the food on one page, while later comparing other meals to Applebee's, not in a flattering way. I've seen some pretty awful looking pictures (after multiple scary shots I won't be ordering the prime rib--and I love prime rib) and some pictures that made me drool. What I'm trying to figure out if there's any rhyme or reason to it, things I should look for or things I should avoid.

Anything goes--buffet, snacks, room service, bar finger food.

Thanks for playing!
I loved pretty much everything I ate onboard the Wonder, but my absolute favourite had to be the Chocolate Lava Cake. Oh, wow.

I don't know. Personally, I like the desserts. BUT, they are a bit less "sweet" than most that you would find most land-based restaurants. Maybe in the "fine dining" world they don't overload with sugar as much as the mass market world does?

And, heading off any comments, I use "fine dining" to separate it from the likes of McDonald's or even Denny's food. Not that cruiseline food is anywhere near a 4 or 5 star dining establishment.

My usual reason for not liking a dessert would be "too sweet", so maybe it'll all work out for me. (I'm not really worried about this, I had to force myself to lose my sweet tooth a long time ago to lose weight (which is probably why I don't like super sweet things now), I just find the seeming paradox interesting. Making cheap but appealing desserts seems like it would be the least of their mass food production challenges.)

I guess this must be why I hear more people talk about Mickey bars and self serve ice cream than any particular dessert.

(I've never had a Mickey bar, but on the rare occasion I eat an ice cream bar it's usually a dove bar or a magnum (darn those things, I rue the day.) how do the Mickey bars compare, anyone?)

We had Mickey bars at WDW. Very good! I look forward to ordering Mickey bars and big island cookies from room service to make ice cream sandwiches the first night of our cruise.

Silly question, but when you order warm chocolate chip cookies and milk from room service how many cookies do you normally get? Or do they ask you how many you want?

You can order as many as you want but they are massive. We over ordered the first time because we thought they were regular size cookies. They are like the size of the cookies at Panera.

We have not sailed in over 2 years so I'm hoping some menu changes...hated the popcorn soup and some lobster macaroni thingie...the worst ever was a chocolate dessert thingie...they should have been shot sending that out, It tasted like they used seawater in a brownie mix and forgot to add the egg and oil...it looked so good and tasted so badly! All of us had to spit it out...I'm not sure what happened there, but the next night they had so many complaints they re-served it and we were all afraid to taste it, but it was good the second go round...loved how they acknowledged our faces on that first bite! :)

I am with you on the steaks! I wonder if it's because the MDR steaks are probably kept in an oven and Palo's comes straight off grill? But Palo steaks are so much better..that is the only reason we would book Palo is to get a decent steak. If you have any sons, I might have to contact you...we always joke that my youngest (16) needs to marry a cattle rancher...she stunned our last servers by eating two full ribeyes on her own (she's tall and thin so no one thought she would do it) but she would have eaten a third but thought it would embarrass her :) I'm guessing I'll have to keep my Palo ressie unless I hear the steaks have improved on Fantasy MDR. :(

I loved my prime rib! LOL. I must have gotten a good cut. :)
I didn't like anything on the pirate night menu. I did try two different entrees, too, hoping for something to WOW. I don't know if I was getting fooded out, or maybe after all day at CC... or if it just wasn't my style. But it lacked the WOW factor IMO.

It's funny, I do not like overly sweet desserts (and neither does DH). In fact, we tend to be in the darker is better camp when it comes to chocolate. 85%? Sign me up!

I found the deserts on board to be overly sweet (with the exception of those little bites at the coffee areas). The only dessert I didn't find overly sweet was the lemon tart sort of thing at AP. I can't recall exactly what it was, but it was on one of the better deserts in the MDRs. I also liked the room service cookies. They were a little more sweet than I like, but definitely better than the majority of the MDR desserts.

DH and I both talked a lot about what the heck was up with the desserts and we were pretty stumped. We decided they were just too sweet.

I love the Comtesse du Barry's cauliflower soup at Royal Palace. I didn't order it the first time we went because I thought I sounded gross- but I tried my sister's and loved it! I get it every time now. Also the sea bass. My husband doesn't eat anything that swims and he even likes it! I like the wraps they have by the pool deck (I can't remember which place)- especially the shrimp one but I don't see that very often. Chicken parm and grape and gorgonzola pizza at Palo. We love the chicken wings from room service.

I don't like the pizzas on deck or the burgers. There are other things too but I can't remember off the top of my head. I like some of the desserts from the MDR, all from Palo and Remy, most that are at Cove Cafe. The ones at the buffets taste like what you would get at Golden Corral.

I can make it simple with my choices...

Favorite menu: Pirate Night (I know I am considered weird in this one, but I never have issues finding anything to eat on it!)

Least favorite menu: See You Real Soon. I had to stretch to find anything at all, and other than room service, there is no other option that night unless you do Palo or Remy. Next time I will!

My favourites are the French Onion soup, the mushroom risotto and the chilled strawberry soup (I think it was on the lunch menu at Tritons one day)
Can't really think of anything I hated. I've had a few things I didn't care for, but you can always just order something else if you're willing to wait a few extra minutes for it!

I have always really enjoyed the desserts. My favourites are usually the little "trio" portions you can get that give you little sample sizes. I have a sweet tooth, but I find that most restaurant desserts are just too big for me; I enjoy the first few bites but then my palate is just overwhelmed with the sweetness. The little ones are just the right size to enjoy every bite. Since I love dessert so much I usually skip one or two courses to make sure I have room since I'm not used to eating a four or five course dinner every night. Perhaps the desserts are so universally unappreciated because everyone gets them on such a full stomach? My husband loves meat and usually polishes off an appy, soup and every bite of his main course then has zero interest in dessert. I sometimes check out the dessert menu at the beginning of the meal and then plan ahead to leave room if there's something I really want to try!

I'm not a huge fan of the pizza or burgers on deck -- they're okay for fast food, but nothing to get excited about. For some reason, though, the hot dogs they have in the little hot food bar outside of O'Gill's Pub, on the Fantasy? We can't get enough of them. :)
