tell me why were aren't giving people the shot?

I actually got my second Pneumo-Vax yesterday. It is good for 10 years. (Turns out the protection is lasting longer than they initially thought it would, as it used to be 5 years.) I first got the shot in 1999 after contracting Pneumococcal pneumonia (Same bacteria that killed Jim Hensen of Muppet fame). It was a secondary infection following a mild flu, after giving birth to be second DD. I was on a vent, in ICU, in respiratory failure, and my family was told to bring clothes for my funeral.

My point in sharing this is two-fold:

1. The regular flu kills too. I was extremely healthy, other than just having given birth, and I was 28 years old.

2. When the immune system is weakened by flu or other illness, ANY bacteria has a better chance to set in and get you sick. Yes, the HINI is more likely to lead to one type of pneumonia, but with a compromised immune system any host of bacteria could come in and make you sick.

AHH! Thanks for all the info! Who needs doctors when I have the DISboards? :thumbsup2 Y'all know EVERYTHING!

Regardless of whether the vaccine is for the flu or pneumonia I am much more comfortable letting my immune system handle it than any vaccine. All the national pressure for this virus and I am not convinced that anyone with a healthy immune system is in too much danger.

I am of the opinion that a healthy lifestyle will lead to a healthy immune system and that should be our first line of defense against disease, not vaccines or drugs. While I do think there are vaccines worth the risk (tetanus, and polio come to mind), I don't think the flu shot is one of them. If you have a compromised immune system maybe this isn't an option, but all the worry about H1N1 is a bit over the top for me. I don't want it but if I get it I am confident I will be fine in the end and build the antibodies myself which is how our bodies were designed in the first place.
Here's a great way to ensure that your immune system is up to the task of defending against H1N1:

Get the vaccine.

Well, our doctor advised us not to get it. We had no intention of getting it anyway but after research and speaking to the doctors we were 100% sure that our decision was the right one for us.

Don't leave us hanging. What was your rationale in not getting the vaccine?

I would rather let nature take its course with this one---even our Dr is not giving it to her children so no way would I give it to mine!

Nothig to leave you hanging about. Our doctor is vehemently against this vaccine for many reasons. He also used to work for the CDC so he does have quite a bit of knowledge when it comes to this as well as all vaccines. That is why his knowledge coupled with my own research and thoughts has confirmed that it is not somethin we want.
