I actually got my second Pneumo-Vax yesterday. It is good for 10 years. (Turns out the protection is lasting longer than they initially thought it would, as it used to be 5 years.) I first got the shot in 1999 after contracting Pneumococcal pneumonia (Same bacteria that killed Jim Hensen of Muppet fame). It was a secondary infection following a mild flu, after giving birth to be second DD. I was on a vent, in ICU, in respiratory failure, and my family was told to bring clothes for my funeral.
My point in sharing this is two-fold:
1. The regular flu kills too. I was extremely healthy, other than just having given birth, and I was 28 years old.
2. When the immune system is weakened by flu or other illness, ANY bacteria has a better chance to set in and get you sick. Yes, the HINI is more likely to lead to one type of pneumonia, but with a compromised immune system any host of bacteria could come in and make you sick.
