Tell Me What You Think Of My DVC Future Plans

These are my plans... Tell me if you think this is a good idea.

My wife and I are in our early to mid 40's and we currently own 310 DVC points split between 2 resorts. That is currently enough for our family of 5 based on our wants and free time. I would like to add on in the future for the day my wife and I have more time and the kids are grown. That way we could have more time away together and we can also take our family, which we pray will be growing, on DVC vacations. Ideally I would like to spend one month or so in a DVC studio during the winter with some points left for additional trips. One of the advantages we have, especially with Saratoga Springs, is that our contract will expire right about the time we receive our eternal reward if you know what I mean. I am not concerned about passing the contracts on to my children as I feel that taking on such an obligation is a decision they should make themselves. Anyways my plan is to add on points as we draw near to retirement assuming that the value of "used" points will be greatly reduced just about the time we can use them most. It seems almost ideal but I was wondering if anyone can foresee any snags along the road besides an early ticket to Glory which I know will be grand.

:thumbsup2 I think it is a great idea. DH and I are the same age (45 and 41, respectively). We have 210 points at AKV and can see adding on for those years. Right now I just don't have enough vacation time to take all the trips I want. ;)

I like your thinking! Sounds like a nice plan!

As a "middle age" person of 41 (hoping I make it to 82), I have also thought about using DVC points for a month or so each winter during retirement. My son is under 2 years of age right now so we plan to have many fun & busy years of DVC prior to those relaxing retirement days....but I love knowing my DVC will be there just waiting for me when I'm older and more gray :)

Until then, I'll prepare with a few small contract add ons and a several bottles of hair coloring.

Only question I would ask is how realistic it is to think that you could spend "a month or so" in a Studio. That's a pretty small room without much of a kitchen. You either need to get really creative with your self-prepared meal menus or resign yourselves to dining out 2-3 times per day for weeks on end.

My wife tends to go to bed 2-3 hours before I do. Granted that may change over time but right now I appreciate the solitude so that I can get some things done in other rooms without worrying that I am disturbing her sleep.

Laundry would also be a challenge.

Even if it were just my wife and I--staying at Walt Disney World--I think I would grow tired of the small confines and the limited cooking facilities after about a week.

I am 42 and DH is 46 and we currently own 545 points. We have been trying to add on about another 200 or so points so that we can do just about what you have planned. Only difference is that we would have to stay in a 1 bedroom villa- we couldn't take that small studio for that long of a time. Our kids are 14 and 10, so we still have a few years of full family vacations at Disney, but I do look forward to being empty nesters and spending several weeks at a time in Disney. We would also like to have enough extra points to take our boys and hopefully their families on big family trips one day!!

This was our thinking when we bought in just about 3 weeks ago. DH is 44 and I am 42. This is the first time we have really thought about ourselves. We bought enough to go on 1 week vacations with DD 17 and DD 12 while she is tied to the school schedule and then about 10 days with just DD12 until we again are stuck to that dreaded school schedule again. Then we will buy more near to retirement with the intent to stay for a full month also in a studio. We will have cereal most days for breakfast (just like we do now at home) sandwhiches for lunch (again like we do Monday to Friday for work) and go out to eat for dinner. DH and I could easily stay in a Studio for a month. While a 1 bedroom would be nice for us being able to stay longer or more visits outways the 1 bedroom for us.

ITA - one month or so in one room is too much, even for people who like & love each other a lot!

I am sure staying in a studio would present challenges but we would spend more time in the common areas to read or just spread our wings. Having those areas is a nice bonus for DVC member and for the most part they are usually empty to say the least. I guess we will have to experience it and if necessary could buy more points.

My wife and I will spend our first night together at a BLT studio soon so it will be interesting to see how we like the limited space. Going from a good sized home to a studio is a change.

Maybe for us it won't be such a challenge since we had a cottage that had just a little more space than a studio and for sure less room than a 1 bedroom. We would spend full weeks up there with limited cooking, no hot water or showers(that's what the lake was for) You learn very quickly how to adjust to that if necessary. We did this for over 15 years with 2 kids. Yes it was nice to come home to where we each could go into our own space but if it meant we could enjoy the wonderful weather for longer timeframes then that is what we would do.
