After looking at all the fantastic pictures that have been posted by all of the talented people here on the Dis, I know more than ever that I really don't like my point and shoot camera. So I am now looking to purchase a dSLR. So, will you post what type of camera you have and what you like and dislike about it?

Edited: Thought it might be helpful for others to bring this back. Also please post your favorite lens type. Thanks!

for everyday use:

Canon 30D with battery vertical grip and Sigma 18-125 lens.

What I like: everything
What I don't like: nothing (so far)

The two cameras that I am leaning towards right now, but I really need to do more research as well as go and physically hold them are: CanonEOS 30 and Nikon D200. I'd still love to see what other people have and their opinions on their cameras before I buy something.

What type of shooting will you be doing most?

this site does a good job of reviewing.

Look at all the cameras. The Canon s2IS, s3IS, Panasonic and Sony higher ends come to mind and others.

You will have to decide what you want to spend, if you want to carry a lot of equipment around etc. Only you can make that decision.

Image Stabilization (IS) is important, especially on telephoto shots.

There is no one perfect camera. They all have compromises.

Good luck on your search.

I've got a Nikon D70. What I like is the way it feels in my hand, the easily understandable menu's, and processing speed.

What I don't like is the noise above ISO 800. Oh, and the monitor is smaller than on a lot of other camera's (which was corrected on the D-70s). It's OK for horizontal photo's, but for viewing vertical photo's, it sucks.

I'm planning on buying a Nikon D2X. Several of the reasons are the larger monitor, the higher MP's, and the low noise with higher ISO settings.

My evry day camera is an Olympus C-60. I just keep that with me at all times. When I do portrait sittings or know that I may want to gete an enlargement of something or just want the best shot I can get, I have an Olympus Evolt-500. I stick with olympus and always reccomend them. They have great cameras that take wonder***l pictures when used correctly. Even my film cameras were olympus brand!

Yau have the good luck of not using Oly C-8080WZ. For the first time ever in my life, I almost literally smash that camera to the ground due to its hunting AF (DH can attest to that). Don't know how many hundreds shots at WDW are missed because of that stupid camera. This is during the time I use dSLR for the studio and using bridge-camera for walkaround.

I don't make that mistake anymore. I only use dSLR for every type of usage.

I just got a Canon Rebel XT that I love so far, previously I had a Kodak 3MP point and shoot and the difference in picture quality is incredible!

I just bought a MInolta 7D, I love it, I have 3 Minolta 35mm SLRs and a bunch of lenses, 2 flashes..etc... so I really didn't want to switch brands and have to buy new lenses and flashes, I was patiently waiting for Minolta to release a pro model digital SLR, unfortunately they instead sold out to Sony, so I debated whether to wait to see if Sony released a good digital slr or switch brands...after further research I decided to buy the 7D, with the hopes that Sony will release a pro model DSLR,

the one major advantage to Minolta is the anti-shake built into the body, rather than having to buy seperate IS lenses...

one of the things I like best is Minoltas layout of buttons and dials, most settings can be made quickly without having to go into the menu..

I have a Pentax *ist DL that I bought back in February. I got a kit with an 18-55 lens at www.buydig.com for a little over $500 (including a memory card). I love it. It's easy to get the hang of, with a clear and intuitive LCD, and while it doesn't have as many bells and whistles as the Canons or Nikons people rave about, it's a great learning tool. And it takes some fantastic pictures.

My one lament is that it lacks IS ... but ratcheting up the ISO to 1600 helps deal with camera shake pretty well, and with relatively little noise.

Mickey88,

Please don't take this as putting down your camera, but from the little time I had with that 5D (?), the ISO400 of that camera is equals to ISO1600 of 20D. The AS feature on that camera is about 2 stops advantage, so considering the noise level, it's just like upping the ISO to 1600 on the 20D.

I know yours is 7D, so I assume the ISO noise is far lower than the 5D? Or am I talking rubbish here?

I've had my Rebel XT for about a five months and my personal opinion is that this new camera has done about as much to improve my photographs as using Julia Child's pots and pans would make me a better cook. But what HAS helped is all of the studying, research, reading, asking questions and practicing that I have done with my camera since I got it.

Don't get me wrong. I love my camera and would recommend it to anyone. But I would have to say that unless I took the time that I did to learn about photography, my photos would probably be worse with a dSLR that I didn't know how to use than my old P&S that I did understand.

mabas9395 is correct. Camera is only the tool. Sometimes I feel so ashamed that my DD7 composition on her Fuji A345 is actually better than my Canon 30D. DOH!

considering the point of this thread is to tell the OP what camera we use, I'm not sure how else to take your post other than putting down my camera, however I don't really care if you or anyone else does..LOL, just like cars we all have our favorites and will defend them, people talk about being old school and making the best shot possible, with no post processing, that's the way I shoot, with 35mm I very rarely shot anything but 100ASA film, I wonder how many people really shot 1600 0r 3200 with 35mm....

but as a test when I first got the camera I went out and shot with all ISOs especially curious as to the noise of 1600 and 3200, and was very pleasantly surprised

We have a D200 :thumbsup2 and love it! It's quite a lot of camera...nice and heavy.

I've just obtained Understanding Exposure and am planning to reacquaint myself with manual photography so as not to use my nice toy as a P&S...LOL
