have to take DD14 out of school for 1.5 days (Thanksgiving week) and upgraded to a 1 br from a studio, just for the three of us (putting DH on the couch bc I can't sleep with his snoring) - using all of our 150 recently purchased points + 2 I had to borrow. And I'm so excited! :confused3

I'm taking DD out for a few days for our X-mas trip OH WELL 8th grade at that time is no real big deal. They will know if they got into a good High school anyhow.

But she is fully aware that if thing (grades attitude) aren't topnotch then I will be going without her.

Not sure if you feel guilty about pulling your daughter out of school, about making DH sleep on the sleeper sofa, or using all your points up already. :teeth:

Nobody should tell you to feel guilty or not about skipping 1 1/2 days of school for your daughter. That's your call and you need to do what you feel is in your family's best interests. I may have an opinion favorable or not about that, but frankly that isn't really relevant.

Congratulations on your first DVC reservation. I'm sure you'll have a great trip! :)

My mother is a retired teacher. When I was growing up, she took me out of school a number of times for travel. She always said that I would learn more in that week away than in class. You learn a lot about the world (travelling and all) and actually see some of the things you read about and see pictures of in school. I don't know if all that applies to Disney World, but she never felt guilty taking me out and she was a teacher.

PS - She was an administrator (principal) so she got 5 extra days during the year off since they work overtime, so she wasn't skipping out of work. ;)

The only problem I foresee is that once you have stayed in a 1 bedroom...........

Addonitis will soon set in! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Have a Magical Stay!

You will be so glad to have a 1 bedroom! With DH snoring, you can just shut the door to the master bedroom and not hear it. Not sleeping well on vacation can put a damper on things. Have a great time.

What is it you're feeling guilty about - taking your DD out of school, or putting your DH on the couch!

1.5 days is nothing. I take my kids out of school, but I am lucky as the teachers are ok with it. As for the couch thing - my friend has a husband who snores a lot, and she just wears earplugs in bed, so you may want to try that. Also, I have seen ads for snoring rings and all kinds of snoring prevention things. My fiance wants me to get one, so I will let you know if they work!

Having a one bed will be wonderful, but you will definitely want to add more points. Our first trip was in a one bed - then I vowed we'd get studios. But, my kids are bigger now, and opposite sex, so a two bed is the only way. You won't regret DVC - a normal hotel room is just not the same after you've experienced it. Have fun and enjoy.

I am a teacher and I say there is nothing to feel guilty about! I say as long as she is getting all As and Bs then it is not a problem. Go and have fun!

I say NOT GUILTY on all three counts!

I am a HS teacher and the few days before a holiday are hectic anyway. Most kids are just too excited and pre-occupied to learn much anyway. So I seriously doubt that 1.5 days will hurt a thing. Since you'll be able to give the teacher plenty of advanced warning, your daughter might even be able to complete her work before you guys even leave. :teacher:

My DH snores, too. I tried the ear plugs. Still too loud, not to mention uncomfortable. Throat sprays, nose strips...anything on the market. Nothing worked. So I understand needing to have separate sleeping quarters while on vacation! No sense in him keeping everyone else up. :p

I LOVE staying in the 1brs. You have the full kitchen and the washer/dryer. I really missed having the w/d in the unit when we stayed in the studio.

As far as using all of your points...well, that's what they're for.

But as mentioned in an earlier post, add-on-itis might be a consequence. I know that it is for me. Our 150 points just isn't going to be enough. I'm hoping of adding on at the BWV soon. :woohoo:

Have a GREAT trip! (P.S. We'll be there the week of Thanksgiving, too!--and I had to borrow 15 points  )

Thanks for all of the responses!. Yes I'm concerned about addonitis - we have another ressie for Easter week at BWV, our home resort, and I don't have enought points to upgrade to a 1BR unless I borrow.. or add on... :confused3

This DVC stuff is like an addiction!!! We just bought 240 pts. at SSR and I am nervous about not having enough!! You can also rent points too in case you didn't know that. I might go away next year with my girlfriends and that might be the way to go so I don't have to use up my points since they will all be chipping in too. Check out the points rental section......... and don't feel guilty and have FUN! :thumbsup2

Have a great vacation, no need to feel guilty.

We are pulling our kids out for FOUR DAYS in September. We do it every year. I always make sure they get their work and that grades are good before we go. The big ones (both will be in HS this year) know that they will stay home (with our friends) if they are not doing what's expected. Luckily I have not had any trouble with the schools about it, but even so, they are MY kids and life is too short. The great thing about the 1 and 2 BRs is that they will have lots of room to work on their assignments-either in the AM before we go play or in the afternoon when we take a break.

So, no guilt! Best wishes and have tons of fun!

My mom took me out of school for a trip to WDW when I was in 7th grade and I have not been permanently damaged (not by that anyhow! :lmao: )

As for the snoring, I always mention to people (because I am the poster child type, I guess?) that it can be so much more than an annoyance, it can be a symptom of sleep apnea, which can have many unfortunate health ramifications besides spousal alienantion, including severe fatigue, high blood pressure and increased risk for heart attack.

Here is a link with more information: http://www.stanford.edu/~dement/apnea.html

Okay, end of public service announcement - I am just so grateful that I stumbled upon the info about sleep apnea that I always take care to pass it on when I hear of someone whose life is being negatively impacted by snoring.

Which is not to discourage you from getting a 1 BR at all! Hope you have a great trip! :thumbsup2

Gosh, 1.5 days is nothing. I have taken my daughter our for 10days every year. With the schools permission of course. She is a straight A student and we always make sure she has caught up before going or when on holiday. We have to stop taking her out for 10days now as she is secondary school and catching up will be that much harder. So we are taking a few extra days in Christmas 2007, missing this year out!!. Mind you we were in Orlando for 26 days last Christmas! A mixture of 1 bed and the Dolphin.

I think coming from the Uk we lose so much traveling time and the flights are quite pricy that we only go every other from now on.

As for the sleeping thing, we now take the mattress of the sofa every night and put it in the bedroom for the two girls to sleep on. That means we have the sitting room in the evening and big bed at night.

Have a great time.

I have pulled my kids out of school in the past for 4 days in October. My daughter will be going to High school this September so I won't be able to do that anymore. :sad2: October is our favorite time of year to go too. I will be pulling the kids out for 2 days in April 2007 though. Just make sure there teachers know ahead of time so they can bring any school work that needs to be completed with them. My kids did there stuff on the plane. My son is still in elementary school so it is easier for him.

Yes, I don't have experience having a child in high school yet, so I'm stressing about even 1 1/2 days out, but she is a good student and I do stress to much , esp. according to DH. So I'll try to relax :cool1: and look forward to the trip.

1.5 days? Please! Nothing to worry about.

About the snoring husband? Consider having him get checked for sleep apnea. He would need to have a sleep study done to determine if he has it. With sleep apnea, your airway is constricted and you snore and you basically wake up every few minutes so that you can breathe. Is he tired despite seemingly getting enough sleep? Does he nap alot? Can you hear him snoring...then very quiet.....and then a loud SNORK!?

If so, consider talking to your doctor about a sleep study. If he has it, they give him this Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine that keeps his airway open.
The best part is A) no more snoring! B) It makes a lovely white noise that helps YOU get to sleep faster!
