Tell me about your magnet paper

I'd like to make some magnets to put in goody bags for my dad's birthday party. I understand there are different thicknesses to magnet paper?? Where did you get yours, how much was it, and is it nice and thick? ALso, does it drink up the ink??

I thought about just ordering some off Ebay (it's pricey, $30 for 24 of them), but the listing said it's 35 mil thickness. With the cost of ink to print them, I don't know if it wouldn't be cheaper to order them.

Depending on what you want to do and what other "machines" you have available-
Wal_mart or Staples has Business card sized magnets that are very strong - you can just print on cardstock or even regular inkjet paper and affix them to the magnets (there is a sticky side that is also very strong) OR you can also run them through a laminating machine or a Xyron and then affix them to the business card sized- I believe there are 20 in a pack for like $7- if my memory is correct- & different amount packs are available
Otherwise, Xyron has a magnet roll to use in teh machine and depending on the model machine you have you can get small magnets to regular papersized ones- Xyron's are sold at the craft stores- w/ a 40% off coupon you can get the large machine fairly inexpensive- Now, not suggesting you run out and buy just for these magnets- If you are a scrapper or stamper, card maker/paper project maker- then it will be very much worth it- As it does stickers, laminating, magnets, permanent adhesive, temporary adhesive... trying to think of other things- It is a great machine - I have the 900 which does larger designs- You can get the 500 I think still- probably check on e-bay for a great price on a used one...

Another trick is to print out your designs on photo paper, laminate them either with a xyron or you can buy laminating sheets at Wally's. They're made by Scotch and come in wallet, business card, 4X6, 5X7 and 8X10. Then, I also went to Michaels and JoAnn's and bought magnetic tape and magnetic dots. The tape is on a roll, double sided, so once you laminate your photo, picture, or whatever you put in the thing, you can cut your own size of magnet to adhere to the back.

I found the magnetic tape and magnetic dots at Michaels in the craft section, by where the 'googly eyes' were. At JoAnn's it was over by the liquid adhesives like modge podge, elmer's glue, and that kind of stuff.

I think that's a little high tech for me though. I'm not crafty at all, don't have a laminator, just a printer.

Still possible to do them right (and thick) w/just a boring old printer? I'd still need to laminate the sheets before I stick them onto the magnet paper, right? I could get that done at Kinkos maybe?

I know you can buy magnetic paper at Walmart in the same section as the iron on transfers (if I remember correctly). I am sorry but I do not remember what I paid for them. I think I got 3 in a pack - 8 1/2 x 11 sheets.

I do not know what you mean by 'how thick'. They are a little thinner than the magnets you get from businesses. They are a full piece of paper with the magnet on the back that you run through your printer. Then, if you are making several, you can put lots on the page and cut them out. These are not laminated or shiny - just like paper on the top.

I wasn't sure if this is what you were after but thought it might help.

When you buy them, it is a full sheet magnet with like a sheet of paper affixed on the top. They are not real thick but not thin like a piece of paper.

You can run the entire magnetic sheet through your printer. And no, I didn't laminate or anything after making them.
