Can anyone tell me about travel in Newfoundland? What is there to see? Is it "travel friendly" (easy to get around)? :moped:

I hear it is very beautiful in the Summer time!

I've not had the privilege of going there but I know quite a few that are from there!

I could ask them but I think it would be since it's an island and I know you have to take a ferry to get there.

Being a Newfoundlander I can tell you that it is an absolutley beautiful place to visit. The scenery is breathtaking and the people are the friendliest you will ever meet in the world.

NL is very easy to get around, however keep in mind to travel from the West part of the province (Port-aux Basques) to the east coast (St. John's) it is an approximately 11 hour drive. Depending on how long you plan to be here, you could concentrate on either side of the province. I would say that the best time to come here is July-September. If you wanted to see icebergs, you'd be better to come May/June but keep in mind it is still not the warmest. Not freezing cold, but not as Spring like as other parts of the country.

Well it seems, I've rambled on. if there is any specific you'd like to know, just ask!

(from another beautiful island, Cape Breton!!:) ) you would leave from North Sydney...to one of two places in Newfoundland...the shorter ride gets you to the eastern edge of Newfoundland, so to get from there to St. John's is the 11 hour drive.

The other option has you taking the ferry from North Sydney to St. John's itself.

L'Anse aux Meadows is the Viking World Heritage location...which is on the northern part of the island.

Were you planning to fly into Halifax, Nova Scotia, or right to Newfoundland? If you fly into Halifax, you would have a 5 hour dive form there to catch the ferry.

HTH!!

Mbb - just a quick correction the ferry option that will take you to the east coast of the island is located in Argentia. About an hour and a half from St. John's.

:Pinkbounc Well,Newfoundland ,along with Florida ,is probably my favorite place on earth to visit.....It simply has everything-friendly people, gorgeous moose, caribou, icebergs, and history. You name it......
The roads are very wellmaintained (better than in Nova Scotia),and you have a choice of ways to go............We prefer the North Sydney -Port Aux Basques boat as it's shorter than the one to Argentia,NL,and not as rough.......Or,you could fly,or take the boat from Quebec to St. Barbe
Some of my fave places on the Rock are:
Rocky Harbor(Gros Morne Park)
Rose Blanche Lighthouse (outside Port Aux Basques,an awesome B and B there);
Twillingate
Griquet ( a community near St. Anthony)
There's so much to do and see,but if you are into moose and icebergs,I'd suggest going in June, that's the best time to see them, before the moose go into the woods for the summer, and before the icebergs melt too much. The weather is very pleasant at that time of year............And ,I would highly recommend a June visit....
Next time,we plan to have our first visit to Labrador, can't wait....We'll take the ferry at St. Barbe there.Great food in Newfoundland too!And such interesting berries, like bakeapples, partridge berries, and the like....
You will have an awesome time,Newfoundland is truly like no other place on earth....
Any other questions,ask me........
Thanks for giving me the chance to talk about one of my fave spots on earth!
Kirsten in Nova Scotia  :cloud9:

Thank you to all! :cloud9: I have seen information from Northwest Airlines about several locations in Canada and DH wants to go somewhere different next vacation so I thought NL seemed a good location! I will certainly get back to you when more specific questions arise! Thanks again!! :wave2:
