My family has been to WDW countless times, yet I've never researched or considered Swan or Dolphin resort. Why? I do not know!! Speak to me like a newbie and tell me what they're all about. Why choose to stay and which? Benefits? Drawbacks?
We love staying on property for many reasons but a main one is proximity and not wanting to rent a car and have to drive on my vacation. I'm perfectly happy with Disney buses (or skyliner) to and from parks even at park close waiting in a long line.

I like the swalphin to start my trip. It’s a Marriott hotel so we usually spend the first night or two there on points. We fly in late and used to stay at the Hyatt at MCO but I found I prefer to go right up Disney. We stay at boardwalk so it’s an easy walk over to check in.

It is a great location with good restaurants. It is not Disney themed (although I do really like their gift shop). You will often see conference attendees walking around. For some the lack of theming and non park goers is a turn off.

Other than theming the other differences that I can think of are you can’t get the dining plan, charge to your room and the drop off for magic kingdom is at the TTC not at the park.

I prefer the swan to the dolphin but have not stayed at the swan reserve.

It’s a great way to save money while staying on property at a Deluxe level resort. Boat transportation, walkable to Yacht and Beach and Boardwalk. Lots of dining options. Great spa. Fantasia Mini Golf. Nice pool. Same park perks as a Deluxe.

The cons are the theming is not as good as a Disney hotel, regular rooms are a bit small and the Dolphin lobby can feel very busy due to the attached convention center. For a quieter stay choose the Swan. Bus transportation not as good as Disney’s.

Overall for a budget conscious trip it’s a great option and a clear step up from the moderate resorts.

Love the Swan and Dolphin. I've stayed at both multiple times. No, they are not in your face Disney. But they feel more upscale than the Disney moderates and they cost much less than a Disney deluxe. You still get the evening magic hour perk that all Disney deluxe resorts get. You can walk/boat to both Epcot and the Disney Studios. Many great restaurants between the 2 resorts. Awesome large pool area with a couple of smaller pools. You can also order food from your chair pool-side.

I love Swolphin. You absolutely cannot beat the price for the location. They can frequently be had for under the price of a moderate even counting the resort fees, and have the same perks as the deluxes in the area that cost hundreds more per night. I genuinely prefer the food and amenities there too, even when staying at the Disney deluxes nearby we always end up eating at Swolphin at least once. We did dinner at Rosa Mexicano on our May trip during the BWI part of our stay. And I actually prefer the pool complex to SAB, I feel like it’s way less chaotic, no chair hogs, and you can order food with a QR code on your chair.

Only downside is the loss of the Disney buses which means dealing with TTC but with the money you save you can just take Minnie Vans to MK if you don’t want to walk to YC or BWI for buses.

I think the theming argument is kinda tired if I’m honest. The Michael Graves architecture is very polarizing but I think it’s whimsical and makes these hotels feel less like regular Marriotts, like they belong at Disney (the Swan Reserve does look and feel like a boring office building though). You’re sitting right on Crescent Lake looking at the Boardwalk. And frankly BWI is the only of the Disney deluxe trio over there that feels interestingly themed to me. But I grew up staying at the Dolphin on family trips when it was first built, so I have a lot of childhood nostalgia for it.

Unless you stay there during a convention it’s all park going adults and families. I usually do a Labor Day trip every year there and never see conventioneers. I tacked on a couple of nights at CR ahead of my Swan stay this year just for ease of access to MK for the Halloween party though.

Curious about why you felt the bus options were not as good as Disney? We are considering this for our next trip.

The Swolphin bus goes to TTC, not the front of MK. However, all park guests are welcome to use Disney transportation, so you have the option of walking to BW or BC and take their bus straight to MK.

The only negative is the bus to the Magic Kingdom. But you can hop on the MK bus at the Boardwalk resort. The bus to the Animal Kingdom isn't a Disney but, but it takes you as close as, if not closer, than the Disney buses. Plus that bus stop has actual cover and seatin.
