I'm tired of shaving and would like to get my legs waxed. I'm a little bit of a chicken and was wondering how much it hurts, and how hot is the wax. I know that the hair grows back finer and there is less of it, but how often do you need to have it done?

One thing......
IT HURTS!!!!!

Just don't do it..... I did it once, NEVER again....

It can hurt a lot especially if it is done by someone who doesn't really know what they are doing. I had one horrible experience. That said, done correctly it is not too bad. I only had a half wax meaning that they only waxed from just above the knee down to my feet. I went once a month for several years. It gets easier every time and was not a big deal. The worst part for me was letting the hair grow in the first time. If I remember correctly the hair had to be 1/4 inch.

The fact that there is pain involved, prevents me from actually doing this.

I think many people that do it when they get older, started when they were teens. I think teens are pretty numb to pain and can tolerate it a lot better than an adult. I think if I started it as a teen, it wouldn't be that big of an issue now.

Pain? Hmmmm......I think that the only thing that might hurt more would be if they set you on fire. No- I am not kidding. It hurts so much that it will render you speechless. Oh- and your shins and ankles hurt the most. I had it done once. Never again. If I have to go through that much pain- and pay for it- I want to never have to shave again.

I've had 1/2 leg waxes a few times. Gave up on it, because it didn't seem to do the trick for me any better than shaving.
That said, you need to find a beautician who does a lot of waxings, because if you get someone less than proficient, the process can be needlessly painful. You can encounter a beautician who is bad at waxings even at very good salons. So, ask your friends for a referral.
You should check the salon out and make sure it is hygienic and that the beautician is qualified. Then book your appointment.
To be virtually painless (there is stinging), hair removal has to be really fast. After the beautician has treated one area of your leg, she will put her hand on that area--it seems to calm down the stinging. Depending on the beautician and your reaction to the process, the beautician may apply a calming lotion of some kind. Be warned, the area of the leg nearest the ankle is very sensitive, and will likely sting afterwards for a while.

I've waxed my eyebrows many times with no problems - I have only waxed my legs one time - once was enough:scared1:It was very painful!!!

I have tried waxing once but I much prefer to use one of the Epi-type machines (I use one made by Braun - you can buy it at Walmart or Target). Both methods pull hair out at the roots so both can hurt but I get used to it very quickly and it hardly hurts after the first few hairs. By using one of the machines you can do it yourself and it is less messy than waxing. One of the things I really did not like about waxing is that the odor of the wax seemed to stay with me for days. Almost like it was still in the pores on my legs.

While a beautician can do waxing (I am a licensed beautician) you should really go to an esthetician for waxing.

I guess I'm the lone wolf here... I've had leg+underarm+bikini waxing for so many years I can't count anymore. It isn't all that bad (well some bikini parts can be). The wax is not hot enough to hurt you, it only hurts when they pull out the hair. I've had my regular lady since ages, and she's real good, but have had others and it didn't feel very different. I have it done every 4 weeks in the summer, and go up to 5 in the winter. However, I often have a few hair that get long in between, but they are light. It's not "perfect" for 4 weeks, but good.

I know that pain varies for everyone, but it also varies according to our cycle. It's better to go the week after your period, you are less sensitive at that time (and much more just beforehand).

I take a couple ibuprofen an hour before waxing. The person doing the waxing, and the wax itself can make a huge difference. Do you have a Bliss spa by you? That is the only place I have found around me that I can go to.

I have a pretty high pain tolerance- I was out shopping in the mall 4 days after a c-section but leg waxing- ONCE was MORE than enough for me--even if I had to shave 3 times a week I would never wax again!! My friend and I were going on a cruise, she waxed a few days before that and by the time we got on the ship her legs were covered in welts- had to go to the Dr who said they were all infections. Apparently the place that did the waxing was not clean (it was a popular, reputable place too!) and she had to go on antibiotics to get it cleared up!

They hair grows back finer? Where did you hear that tall tale? Maybe it depends on the person. If I waxed it would be no different than shaving for me. I am hairy.

I am sure it hurts like hell. :lmao:

Hmmm....I did it about a month ago for the first "professional" time, and honestly it really didn't hurt. Down by the back of my ankles it hurt a little, but that was really it. I only did a half wax too, so I didn't get my thigh done, but honestly it really didn't hurt that much. I will say that it really didn't last much longer than shaving for me either, so that was a disappoitment. I remember trying to do it once to myself when I was a teen and I remember it being VERY painful, but I was an idiot and had no idea what I was doing:rotfl: I'd absolutely go back and keep getting it done, if it'd last any longer. I also get my eyebrows waxed, and for me doing the under part of the eyelid is more painful than doing any part of my legs when she did them.

I haven't had it done this summer because its just not convenient, but before that, I use to get it done all the time. It really isn't bad at all. In fact, its kind of relaxing and once I feel asleep. You lie there and they massage your legs before they pull. I would always get a full leg wax.

If you want to talk pain, never get your upper lip threaded. That was so painful it brought tears!

I wax underarms, eyebrow and bikini and have for years.

I did leg waxing once and it was very painful!!! Won't do it again.

I use to wax full legs, bikini, and armpits. To me it was painful and the stinging lasted for quite a few minutes. For me the worst part was the bikini area, ankles, and behind the knees. Then when the hair grew back I would have the worst ingrown hairs. I hated growing the hair out long and the week before my appointment I would be so embarrassed because the hairs had to be 1/4". I saved up money and was finally able to do Laser Hair removal which was a much better choice for me.

3 times a week? I'd love that!! I have to shave EVERY DAY!

When I was younger I had to shave maybe once every week or so....now once a YEAR LOL....I went to great wolf lodge in April and shaved...I have not had to shave anything but under arms since (and even that is only like once a month since it just doesn't grow much)....hair just stopped growing once I hit pre-menopause. Until I had read it on here I never imagined any woman would have to shave daily like men do!
