Tell me about Disney Dollars

My daughter is going to Disney in August '04 with her best friend and her mother. I would like some info on Disney Dollars...Where do you get them, How do you spend them? Are they paper or a type of credit card to spend for purchases. Should I get these for my daughter to use for spending or just give cash to the adult going to distribute to her as she finds something to purchase?

I guess it depends on the age of your child and how much money you are sending with her. Disney Dollars can be used all over but if lost they are like cash and can't be recovered. If your daughter is a responsible teen you might look into the prefilled debit cards. You put X amount of money on it and she'd use it like a credit card. Although she couldnt use the card at small snack carts like for a So possibly a combination of the 2 would be the best option.

Oooops forgot to add. DD can be purchased at your local Disney Store and are paper. Each denomination has a character on them.

Careful! Don't buy a Disney Gift Card (the plastic credit card type) at the Disney Store to give to her. She will not be able to use it in the parks! Disney Dollars as Cinders said can be used all over just like cash -- and if she give a DD $10 she will get change with regular money. I think you can get prefilled debit cards through your bank (I know Bank of America has them) or possibly through Visa/Master Card.

For a prepaid visa, I recomment the Visa Buxx card from Wachovia. I heard about it last year on my local news around xmas.

It is geared towards teens. Parents can put money on it, up to $1,000 max at any time and view their spending habits. It is great so your child won't loose cash and also nice for gifts. Also great for children in college who still get an allowance.

There is a one-time fee per card, which isn't much. I have one for myself and just signed myself up as the teen. You can get alerts if they use them at certain ADULT stores that they shouldn't or block them (I'm pretty sure it can be done). You can also get alerts if it falls below a certain amount.

I put money on mine on a weekly and sometimes monthly basis depending on our financial status. I use mine for xmas spending and vacations and LOVE IT. Gives me a budget to spend with so I'm sure NOT to go over.

When DD becomes old enough, she will definately be getting one. I can track her purchases (to see if she uses it wisely) and put her allowance on it. Nice if they go away with family members.
