we have been WDW for numerous trips and have now done DCL 4 trips so my wife is now interested in Aulani. Since this a fairly big difference for us, especially getting there (live in AL) really need to determine if worth it. we are 5 , kids 12, 10 10. we know it will be beautiful and well run but wondering what about activities, cost in general, excursions, any special info we would need know,
in general is it a "good trip" or a "wow, what an amazing place, I cant believe we are here" trip.
while I know no one can say how our family will like it just looking for perspective of others because so different for us.
thanks

I'm sure the Mod's will shortly move this to the Aulani section of the DIS.

For the OP, there is so much we could say about Aulani. Its absolutely beautiful. You'll be blown away the moment you arrive. All the thought and detail that went into creating this resort is just amazing.

I think the key is to understand that although it is a Disney run resort, it is not WDW or a Disney Cruise. I think people go expecting it to be similar to these vacations and it really is a whole different experience. We go to Hawaii on a regular basis approx every two years, it is one of our favorite places in the world to go, there is so much to do on the different islands and it boggles my mind that people only go to Aulani and no where else within the state. In my opinion, the best way to approach an Aulani vacation is to think of it as a Hawaiian holiday that happens to include a Disney resort stay. Sooo, would you go to Hawaii if Aulani wasnt there? That is the question!

As you can tell from my sig, I'm a BIG Disney fan, but my family also lives Hawaii and goes every couple years. We thought Aulani was probably the nicest resort in Hawaii that we've stayed at. We were with a big group, so we didn't venture off too much, and I would have liked that, because I got a little bored with the food selection. It was a lot more laid back and relaxed feeling than any other Disney vacation has felt, even the cruises. In fact it was much more relaxing than the previous week we had spent on Waikiki. I have teens, and they did go to some teens activities, and enjoyed what they did. The kids in our group did one activity in Aunty's, they enjoyed it, but didn't want to go back. I would definitely go to Aulani again when I'm back in Hawaii, but I don't think I would go back just to go back, if that makes sense. I still prefer the cruises and the variety they offer.

My kids are similar ages, and we live in FL, very close to WDW. We've done WDW numerous times, but usually only day trips, not like other families who travel to get there and stay at resorts. And we've never done a DCL, although it's on my list for next year!
We just got back from Aulani and it was way more than a "good trip!" It was AMAZING!!!
Since it's such a long trip for us, we really thought it may be a once in a lifetime trip. But the entire time we kept talking about when we come back. We will make it happen. It may take a while. But we will definitely go back.
To fly there from the east coast was very expensive. Most people we met there were from CA, so a much easier trip for them. We did book a one bedroom villa. So we didn't spend much on food there since we had a full kitchen. We were in Oahu ten days and only ate out 4 times. (two breakfasts and two dinners).
We planned our own excursions since we heard they were expensive to go from Aulani. We stayed on the other side of the island a few nights before going to Aulani. So that helped keep the price down on the room and the excursions. Then when we arrived at Aulani we could enjoy it and not have to leave.

We also live in Florida and have been to Disney to many times to count. We are annual passholders and DVC. We have also been on over 20 Disney cruises over the last 10 years. We went to Aulani last summer for the first time not sure what to expect. Within days, we all knew it was where we wanted to spend our big vacation every year. We had the biggest adjustment coming back home to Florida. I swear I was depressed for weeks. Our trip from Aulani to the airport was like an eerie silence. From friends seeing my pictures on Facebook, we had 2 families join us this year. We had a blast. Sometimes we were all together and sometimes we split and sometimes we were just my daughter 13 and my husband and I. We had 12 days of the best vacation ever.

We had a rental car the entire time although we didn't really use it all that much. The 2 other families had gotten there a few days before us so they were ready to do some sightseeing. Our first day trip we kind of ate our way to the North Shore. We stopped at Dole Plantation, Matsumotos for shaved ice and Mackeys food truck for some awesome shrimp. We went to the beach with all the sea turtles and we searched for sea glass. By the time we got back to Aulani it was pretty late in the day. Our second day trip we drove to the other side of the island and stopped at Lanikea (or something like that) Beach. The most beautiful place I have ever seen. We then stopped at the blowhole and on to Hanauma Bay. Stayed there a few hours and then stopped at the Pali lookout on the way back. Another full day from Aulani. We went over to Paradise Cove lagoon and visited the sea turtles over there a few times as well. We also did the Paradise Cove Luau. We still had 5 days after our friends left so we decided to venture over to the Waikiki area since I was to afraid to do it last year. We made a stop at the big mall there. Can't think of the name at the moment. Maybe Ala Moa? Anyway, we wanted to go to the big Disney store to get Hawaiian tsum tsums. We found lots of cute Hawaii Disney things there and by the time we left we had gone back twice to pick up more tsum tsums from everyone who had seen my post about the adorable Hawaiian Mickey & Minnie tsums. We hopped the trolley over to Waikiki Beach. It was so pretty but very touristy. The area reminded me of a Hawaiian NYC. Glad we went but was more glad I was staying at the much more relaxing Aulani. We talked about maybe staying there a night next trip.

We were not planning on going back summer of 2017 as it is so expensive flying from Florida but my 13 year old begged me to cancel our 7 day Fantasy cruise next spring to pay for the tickets. We absolutely fell in love with Aulani last summer but just make sure you give yourself enough time to totally enjoy. Last year we went for 10 days and this year 12. Both the other families only came for 8 days and both regretted when it was time to go.

Oh I really regret not going to that Disney store and getting the Tsum Tsums!!! My daughter bought a few tsum tsums at the Aulani gift shop. But of course they didn't have the Hawaiian ones. I read on here that they didn't. But I was hoping they would by now. And I just didn't have the time to go to the Disney store while we were in Waikiki. So I didn't even tell my daughter about them. But she would have been on cloud nine if she could have gotten some. Maybe I'll buy one on eBay...

I have quite a few sets and if somebody decides they do not want them I will message you. They really are cute. I even bought myself this Hawaiian Mickey mouse with his ukulele.

Awesome!!! Yes, please let me know if someone doesn't want them! :-)

My family (kids 11, 9, and 6) spent at least 50 days at the World over the past 2 years. They MUCH preferred Hawaii to Disney World. It was amazing.

As far as the cost, yes SUPER expensive and we did many excursions which only added to the cost. I know some people are content to sit at the resort all day, and the kids would have been fine to spend more time there at the pool and beach. However, there are so many opportunities to do things that we don't usually have the chance to do that we couldn't pass those up. I do have to say that you should research excursions and activities BEFORE you go and book what you want. I met some people in lines at the resort who tried to book things when they got there (through the concierge) and they weren't able to get into the activities they wanted to do. Some of the things that we tried on Oahu were fishing on a chartered boat, swimming with the dolphins in the wild, Pearl Harbor, surf lessons, visiting the Dole Plantation, going to a luau, going to the swap meet, and going on a submarine ride. We also took a trip to the Big Island and got to see the active lava during a helicopter tour. We also tried a couple of the free activities at the resort- learning the ukulele and the animation class. The only thing that was a miss for my kids was Aunty's.

what about air fare? we have always driven to WDW. we would have to go next year, late may early june. what would be rough ball park figures on air fare? just trying to get budget idea.
thanks

We live in Dallas and we're thrilled to see airfare for under $1000 pp, coach. We ended up getting it for about $880 but I felt very lucky to get that (flew in Saturday of Memorial Day weekend). I think generally people on here say $800-1000 unless you live on the west coast, then cheaper. From AL, I assume you'll have to connect either via DFW, ATL, ORD, LAX, etc. Connecting through LA gives you several airlines to choose from so prices may be a bit more competitive. From Dallas, AA is the only non-stop option so that is what we did. It was priced the same as other options on other airlines that required connections, so we went with non-stop.

We just returned from a 10-day stay and expensive? Yes....worth it? A very subjective thing but for us, ABSOULUTELY! We flew from Michigan with airfare being about $1k each (1-stop each way) but you can do better. There are only three of us with an 11-year old and he loved it.

That for us was the hard pill to swallow on this trip. We travel with 6, so being out almost $6000 before we even get there....:crazy::crazy::crazy:

Or leave a few home...oops did I post that?! :flower1::flower1::flower1:Really we had a spectacular time and it was well worth the airfare and long flight. Would do again in a heartbeat.

Very good points here!

We go to Hawaii (from Maryland) every other year (we own at the Marriott Ko Olina next to Aulani) and also lived on Oahu for 3 years (starting in 1995).

If you are planning on a trip to Hawaii, then yes, Aulani is a nice resort to choose! Much nicer than Waikiki for the peaceful atmosphere (although it used to be so much more quiet years ago at Ko Olina). We love the lagoons and the Kapolei area.

We have always used airline miles, but yes, a reasonable budget is $1,000 round trip per person.

We go for two weeks, but next year I have four weeks booked (we own a two bedroom lockoff villa, so opted to lock off so spending two weeks just my DD and me probably in the studio, then all four of us for another two weeks in the full one bedroom). It's a long trip, and last trip I swore two weeks wasn't enough time! I'm a stay at home mom, so can work out the details to do this.

I recommend researching a trip to Hawaii and all your options first. A Hawaii vacation is so vastly different than a Disney vacation.

For our next trip, after the boys come over to join us, my DD and I are planning a few days on the Big Island just for the two of us.
