Well, I'll be. Scientists have successfully teleported a particle from one point in space to another; effectively, the particle was present in two places at the same time.

What troubles me is how the particle jumped through space. Wormhole? If so, then that particle has journeyed outside of our known universe...

I was watching a show about this on TV over the weekend with my husband and kids. I think the series is called Sci Fi Science. It was very cool but i don't think anything actually moves, more like an exact replica can be coaxed into existence in another place based on the laws of Quantum Physics. No less cool though. My kids were disappointed to learn it wouldn't help them travel though, and that cracked me up!

Absolutely fascinating.

I remember when the supercollider in CERN first went active with their hadron collider technology - all those scientists warning that the ensuing gravity would gobble up the earth...

Guess they were wrong ;)

Hmm next we'll have Star Gates with stable wormholes :)

As I understand it, to create a wormhole - to pinch time and space together in a nexus point - you need huge amounts of gravity. OK, so far so good, but surely if you get too close, time will get screwed up and you'd get crushed to smithereens...

Well according to StargateSG1/Stargate Atlantis you also need S$%^loads of energy :)

What is a stargate?

The stargate operated by the U.S. Air Force's Stargate Command (SGC) at Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center near Colorado Springs, Colo., is one of a vast number of wormhole-generating "doors" that allow for near-instantaneous intergalactic travel.

Created millions of years ago by the Ancients, one of the earliest living beings in the universe, they are scattered throughout planets, with each stargate bearing a unique address, similar to a telephone number.

Each is a monumental, roughly circular structure atop a base. The operating portion is composed of giant, moveable inner and outer dials, within which a wormhole entrance appears. Some stargates have an iris that opens and closes over the wormhole entrance. This iris, when closed, rests less than 10 micrometers from the "event horizon" (the two-dimensional energy field forming the passageway to the generated wormhole). This leaves essentially no physical space through which an unwanted object or visitor can materialize.

How does a stargate work? What's it made of?

Stargates are made of the element Naquadah (sometimes transliterated from the original language as Naquada), a quartzite metal not found on Earth. A teleportational wormhole is generated when charged neutrinos are applied to Naquadah, the only known element that absorbs and energizes with neutrinos. This forms a stable, artificial wormhole that connects to another stargate. The derivative Naquadria is a powerful yet unstable fuel source; prolonged exposure to its radiation can cause mental disorders.

How does one travel between stargates?

The monumental inner dial of each stargate has 39 symbols, called glyphs (such as those at left), which correspond to different constellations. The outer dial has nine chevrons. When a combination of the inner dial's glyphs makes contact with seven of these chevrons, a wormhole is activated, connecting the dialing stargate with the one whose code it has been set to — just as dialing a seven-digit telephone number makes contact with another telephone. (The last symbol in a stargate sequence is always the point of origin.) When a "puddle" of energy forms from the neutrino-Naquadah interaction, a person or device can pass through the puddle to emerge from the other stargate — often on a different planet, but sometimes in deep space or in orbit of a planet.

In the episode "The Fifth Race", an eighth chevron was activated (thanks to the Asgard) and Carter noted, "The extra chevron must add a new distance calculation to the existing points, like a different area code." The purpose or function of the ninth chevron is still unknown.

I love Stargate, am a huge fan! Currently I'm working my way through Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate: Universe, both as good as the original.

Movie was good too.

They should just ask a cat. You think it's in one place, then you turn around and BAM! There's the cat. Experts at teleportation.

We have the entire SG1 series plus all three movies on DVD. Now working our way through season 4 of Atlantis on NetFlix :)

If the particle is actually present in TWO places at once, I don't think that's teleportation. That sounds like a rip in the Universes where two Universes occupy the same time & space. So, you would have TWO objects in two times & spaces.

According to Star Trek: Voyager, a wormhole is like a tunnel, with a beginning & an end. So there would only be ONE object either at the beginning OR at the end. Not in two places at once. Of course, that depends on how quickly we can measure time. If the object traveled at faster than we can visually detect, it can appear to be in two places at once. :teleport:

Admittedly i did have to go and look this up but i do remember reading about the big to-do a while back, maybe in OMNI or something like that. I do think there is good reason for concern, sometimes heady folks can get so caught up in whether or not something can be done they really never stop to consider if it should be done, or the negative consequences if a theory isn't quite right. After all so much of physics is theoretical there really aren't many practical places to test things in a little way, so if things go bad with subatomic particles they are going to go bad in a big big way. Trying to duplicate the Big Bang should probably give anyone pause, I sure hope they don't screw anything up.. fingers crossed.

BTW, I do agree with the poster who suggested asking a cat;). My son's friends all call our 17 year old cat Moses because they are absolutely convinced he is a miracle cat who can teleport at will:ccat:

Well cats are not originally from this planet. ;) Plus, those ancient Egyptians, must have really known something about them, to have revered them so much. :worship:
