Hi,
I'm a mom of a teen who can't seem to go a day without working out. She wants to use the gyms at the resort at WDW (we are at Beach Club). Do any of you have experience with this. Have they let teens use it? And did you find them friendly to younger athletes (she is almost 15)?

Thanks,
DJ

Some of the resorts have age restrictions on when you can be allowed into their gyms. I'm not sure if it's 14 or 16. It may be 14 with a parent and 16 without, but I'm not sure. I've never used one previously mostly because with all the stuff we do while we're down there, the parks themselves are a workout!

imo i think they will probably let you if your with her but would she realy need to work out with all the walking you will be doing when your at disney?

No, she isn't going to use it on the days we go to the parks, but we take "break" days (for DH and I to relax), and those are the days she wants to use the gym. She is just stressing because soccer try outs are 2 weeks after we return and a lot of girls are trying out and the coach keeps sending emails telling the girls to be working out and be in good shape if they want to make the team. So she is worried about that and this is why she wants to be able to work out.

Thanks everyone for the info!

if shes a soccer player, i suggest taking a ball to disney with you. she can go outside and juggle (if she can juggle) and that will probably be more help to her than running on a treadmill.

i'm trying to dig up some info for you about age thing at the gyms no luch so far and the offical diseny site won't load if you havn't cheked there yet i suggest doing so.

I found this at AllEarsNet

Ship Shape Health Club - is located between the Beach and Yacht Club resorts next to Lafferty Place Arcade and open from 6am to 9pm. Equipment includes Nautilus, Hammer Strength and aerobic machines as well as a spa, steam room, sauna and massage therapy. Massages by appointment only.

Beach Club resort guests (age 14 and older) can use the fitness center at no additional charge for the duration of their stay. A parent or legal guardian must accompany children under 17. In addition, Disney Vacation Club members will be allowed to use the fitness center at any Disney Vacation Club resort, as long as they are staying at a Walt Disney World resort. Guests of other Disney resorts may do so for $12 per day, based on availability. The purchase of a spa treatment includes use of the adjacent fitness center for the day of treatment.

Thanks so much! Sounds like she will be all set!

As for soccer, she is new to it and can't do the stuff with the ball that the experienced soccer players do (which is why she is so nervous for try outs--she is hoping her athletic abilities do it for her---she is in a very small school so that helps).

Thanks again everyone for your help!

As a (ex) soccer player, treadmills will be her best friend. And if she wants to get fresh air, the loop around the Epcot resorts and the lake is great for running early in the morning.

if shes not really skilled with the ball, being a strong runner/lots of endurance will help her.

I've been in your daughter's shoes before. I've gone to Disney right before my tennis season started. She'll be doing plenty of walking, so she won't fall out of shape, remind her of that so she isn't stressing about it on her vacation.

And make sure she does enough working out BEFORE the trip too. But I've seen plenty of younger people in the gyms. She'll be fine.

And like a previous poster has said, the lake at the BC is an AWESOME place to run, as long as she can tolerate the heat.

I've used the gyms at disney and they are nice and clean.
there are age restrictions it's usually 14 with a parent and 16 without...but you could probably check that on the beach club's website (i'm staying there soon!) or call them up they'll be happy to help.

I'm not about the beach club, but at SSR the rule was 14 with an adult and 18 without. If she's not causing a problem it shouldn't be a problem unless there's a cranky cast member in there (usually not). And tell her to just relax about it, honestly.

I don't have any experience with using gyms when I was under 18, but I would imagine they have restrictions since younger people can get injured pretty easily while working out and it's a huge liability.

However, I liked the soccer ball idea if you can take one for her. Also, swimming is a good workout and if she can't get in at the gym due to her age, she can go for a nice long swim or walk/jog around the facilities and up and down stairs to keep her endurance up.

yeah, I work out every morning with my dad while I'm down there and they never give me a problem with it. as long as your with her there shouldnt be.

Yes, she was able to use the gym without any problem. Actually, she only went the first day, and then on another day she run around the lake (at BW and BC) and the other days we were at the parks all day so she didn't do a work out then. But I did have to stay with her since she is under 18.
