Teens rejected from Prom

Well, if those dresses were too revealing, then I should have been arrested at prom for indecent exposure. (Ill-fitting strapless dress + A cups = flasher.)

I was really expecting some risque dresses, but those weren't all that bad. I've seen much worse!!

Here is another photo of different girls, go to April 16th. Here is another photo of different girls, go to April 16th. http://www.nola.com/katrinaphotos/tp/
None of them look bad, for the exception of one.
I read several forums on Nola.com where people wrote in with their opinions.
Several young ladies from the school wrote and all seniors. Their grammar was HORRIBLE. I hate to be ugly, but they should be concerned less with the prom they missed and more concerned with the crappy education they have received from the state of Louisiana.

Compared to this one

the all looked fine to me.

Okay maybe a couple were close, but nothing was way out there. Now if they showed up in that one (it was the first one my DH said after I asked him) I could see why they would be turned away.

I wonder if the school published the "dress code" for the evening or if it was an on the spot decision by the door watchers?
This is what the offenses were:

a teacher refused to allow the girls into the prom because of alleged violations of the Jefferson Parish school system's dress code, most of them related to excessive display of cleavage. "A student will not wear clothing that exposes the student's back, chest or midriff."

The policy, which also strictly restricts fishnet or see-through clothing, has been in effect for years and is included in a handbook that parents sign, Nowakowski said. He added that students who didn't gain admittance Friday night were given a chance to leave and alter their dresses to bring them into compliance, as some did.

They go on to say: "They do make extra material for dresses for large-breasted women," he said, adding that those who feared their dresses might not comply with the code could have brought the dress to school earlier and tried it on for Gardner. Seeing a dress in a picture and seeing it on the girl may lead to different conclusions, he said. "We still have a few more high schools that are going to have proms in the next month, so if there are other parents out there and they have questions, they might want to call the school and get it cleared up," he said. "I'd hate to have another memory ruined."

What did the dresses look like that were allowed in???

I thought they were tame compared to the dresses at my proms in '98 and '99!! A few girls from my prom got their dresses at a store where 'dancers' get their dresses!

That's ridiculous!!! There was nothing wrong with those dresses...they were normal prom dresses.

I think it's crazy that my cheerleader daughter can't wear her uniform to school because it doesn't fit with the dress code, but as soon as school is over she can cheer in the gym for a basketball game in the same tiny uniform...either it's fine or it's not...make up your mind!!

The girls at our school are required to bring their dresses in for approval (private Christian school), so no sad surprises. You can't always see everything from a picture, but I think several of those would pass at our school.

From the picture with the girls in the line, I'd send the girl in the white dress with the strappy back home, and maybe the orange one at the end has a similar cut, it hard to see. In the set of several pictures, one chick is about to lose her dress, and does one have openings all the way down the front? But for the most part :confused3

I'm sorry, so they're supposed to wear what? Nothing strapless if they have big breasts. Nothing low-cut at the back. Seriously, how many prom gowns does that leave? I don't own a SINGLE dress that doesn't expose either some of my chest or some of my back.

Those girls should have gotten themselves some sequined turtlenecks. :sad2: It's just ridiculous. I'd be so angry if my girls were not allowed to wear a normal prom dress.

A few were borderline and a few girls really didn't have the figures to pull off their dresses but I can't say they were bad enough to send them home.

I agree! I kept looking at them to see if I was missing something. Those aren't anything that bad at all... sorry that it happened to them!

I thought they were all ok. I was amused by the one girl in the "flasher" pose though, given what had apparently just happened ;)

I see nothing wrong with those dresses. This is prom, not the 8th grade formal.

I rarely ever say this, but it looks to me like discrimination. All of those girls were "curvy", none of them were particularly skinny. Interesting how their dresses weren't ok because they had bigger breasts. Most of the dresses were covering their breasts fine too. If I were them I would seriously consider that they have been discriminated against because of their body size. I won't comment on it being racial, because I do not know the racial make up of the school, and whether this sample of girls is proportionate to the total population of the school.

And I actually think most of them looked lovely because they had meat on their bones, they looked healthy. I hate girls that look like sticks.

Im fairly sure the school makeup is mainly African American. This is a New Orleans area school.
The picture I have Nola.com, there were a few very slim young ladies, so Im not sure what the issue is, seems to be an overzealous teacher.

I saw nothing wrong with those dresses. I wonder if a "dress code" was set up before hand. In my hometown there is a private school and before there formal, the girls have to take a picture of their dress (front & back) and get it approved before they can wear it. I see nothing wrong with that if it is known upfront that their is going to be a dress code. If I was one of those parents -- I would have been irate!!

I know that at least a few of these girls, brought pictures into the offending teacher beforehand and the dresses were approved. I dont think that was the case for all of them though.

Those seem to be standard dresses.:confused3 I wonder if those pictures actually show the banned dresses.

I was thinking the same thing. I have a hard time believing that those dresses are deemed risque.

They all looked fine to me. They banned the 2 piece prom dresses at my hs.. now those were revealing.

Should these girls of ducked taped "the girls" to hide them?

nothing is wrong with those dresses...wonder who was behind banning them??? Would love to know.
