Drug Conviction Worksheet
Federal law suspends your eligibility for federal student aid, if you have been convicted for the possession or sale of illegal drugs for an offense that occurred during a period of enrollment for which you were receiving federal student aid (grants, loans, and/or work-study).

If you have been convicted in the past, this does not automatically mean that you are ineligible for federal student aid. This worksheet will help you determine your eligibility.

Thanks. So, if you are old enough to be receiving federal student aid, and get busted, tough luck. It isn't for any conviction as a teen, etc.

I think it's for any conviction when you are over 18 or when you are under 18 but they try you as an adult. I'm not sure exactly how the worksheet works--it asks questions about whether the conviction is on your record, how old you were, if you were tried as an adult, how many convictions for possessing vs. selling, etc.

It also depends on who's in office. They had it where if you had been convicted of a drug crime you couldn't get federal funds, then when Clinton was in office, he suspended it, and when Bush went back in office he reinstated the rule. I remember reading an article about it, about a year after
Bush was in office and the rule was in effect. The article was about a girl who had been convicted of murdering either one or both of her parents (I can't remember which) and had a full scholorship to Harvard, but someone who had been convicted of using pot (not dealing) did not qualify.

As far as the laws go, I'm against "victimless" crimes. So, I wouldn't agree with convicting someone for drinking underage (being that you only hurt yourself) but would rather they use the resources to convict someone for drinking and driving (which does hurt others)

I am fifteen years old. I go to highschool. Now, at that line, a good part of you would just skip over my post. Don't deny it. I know it happens. But I feel like this conversation needs the imput of someone who's there. Not someone who's been there. Not someone who remembers it. Someone there now.

At my highschool its near impossible to have a social life and not drink alcohol. At the parties its there. At most people's houses its there. But I don't drink alcohol. I never have and I don't see it in my near future.

My biological father was a drug addict/alcoholic. My grandfather was a drug addict. Another grandfather was an alcoholic.

I have an addictive personality. I don't drink becuase I don't know if I could stop. But I don't think it about it that way. I don't think about alcohol when I'm making plans. I don't think about it when I'm going somewhere. I just ignore it. If I'm around someone who's drinking it, I don't drink it. I usually go somewhere else.

Thats my input. and if I can do that, anyone else can too.

Sparx, you are one smart young lady. It sounds as though you are making awesome choices for your life.

Sparx, you and my 15 year old niece give me up for 10 years from now. (when I will have a 15 year old.)

It takes a strong person who knows themselves well to make that choice (and not follow the crowd just to fit in.)

I was not a drinker in HS too. (nor now as an adult) I sometimes felt like myself and my small group of friends where the only ones. It wasn't true, but it can feel that way. We had so much fun we didn't need it. We were quite the silly bunch, back then.

I commend you for your strong self esteem!!! NOt many teens are as strong minded as you are. My DD also has a similiar family history of alcholics (uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and some cousins!!) but all the talking in the world will not stop her!!

She even witness me having to give my 16 year old nephew CPR after he had an alcohol induced grand mal seizure..............which went terribly wrong and he stopped breathing and his heart was fluttering!! DH and I performed CPR on him at a family wedding..............yes, it scared DD for a little while but that is forgotten!!

Unfortunately, she can't see too far into the future!!

On another topic, these kids posting their drinking binges on their My Space!!! Colleges and employers are now looking at these in order to base whether or not the student/employee should be admitted/offered a job!!

but don't think I'm cofortable with the court system being tied up with or my teen having a police record that follows him for the rest of his life because he had a beer.
Yeah, I'm fine with the court system being "tied up" with people who have broken the law. You may disagree with the law, but underage drinking IS illegal. Also, remember that ALMOST ALL crimes and MOST car accidents involve alcohol or drugs -- putting some fear into young people concerning this dangerous substance isn't a bad thing. If they're in court, they were almost certainly doing more than sitting around sipping a beer quietly.

And teen police records don't necessarily follow a person for the rest of his life. A person who makes one mistake early in life can apply to have his juvenile record "sealed" -- my brother did it. Nothing dealing with alcohol, but he did commit a minor crime as a teen. He went to court, did some community service, was on probation for a while -- it scared him badly, and he never did anything like that again. When he turned 18, he was able to have that record sealed; it's like he never commited the crime at all -- because he was young and he turned himself around, he got a fresh, clean start.
