Teens 13-17 - How do they know?

I have a strange question. If over 12 are considered adults for payment on the cruise. How does DCL determine who is 13-17 for Common Ground?

I guess because you have their birth certificates. But that is my argument, If I have to pay an adult price for my daughter who is 12 1/2 time of cruising then I feel she should be able to go into common grounds. If she is not considered a teen/adult for common grounds than I shouldn't have to pay an adjust price for her to cruise. I e-mailed Disney about my daughter going into common grounds and her answer was a big story, about how they did research of what age should do what activities, blah, blah, blah, with the outcome being that I had to ask a Program Manager about it when I get on the ship. I think they think that 12 year olds are still in grade school. But most are not, they are in Junior High. Sorry I got off the subject, I thinking maybe they have it written down somewhere. Curious?

When you pay for the cruise you give the age of all your children on the sheets you have to fill out. when the child enters common grounds for the first time the counselors in common ground ask your name and then look you up on the sheet to make sure you are 13-17. they get a list of all the kids names.

the reason they do not have 12 year olds in the room is because of the wide range of age. its hard enough to get a 17 yr. old to socialize with a 13 or 14 year old let alone a 12 year old who is just barely in middle school. the maturity levels are a lot different in a 12 yr. old opposed to a 16 or 17 yr. old. 12 is just the cut off. if they allowed 12 yr. olds in common grounds then it would be parents with 11 yr. olds complaining. its a special place for teens and something for 12 yr. olds to look forward to next year. i say the age division is great.

I agree with 12 year olds being closer to maturity of 10 & 11 year olds than with 17 year olds, but then for pricing they should still count as children.

This would not have mattered in our case as we had 2 rooms and had to pay adult fares for the first 2 people in each room, but I feel others should be charged childrens fare if their 12 year old is considered the same as 10 & 11 year olds for programming. Seems more equitable if the cut-off age "matched" the age for teens in common grounds.

JMHO :)

It is nice that DCL thinks of young and old alike however, I think the 18-20 yo group is considered the least. The adult activities are gearded more for older adults. They need a place of their own to socialize within their unique age group.

i couldn't agree with you more. 18-20 is a weird age to be at. it seems as though you are too old to be a teen but to young to hang out with the adults. last cruise i was on i heard they were thinking of things to do with that age group but had no ideas yet. i guess a lot of people comment on that.

I've nerver paid an adult price for my 12 and younger-the price I get quoted is kicked up when they reach 13-and therefore eligible for common Grounds.

Also on this past cruise 7/5 they had many activities in the common grounds broken in 13-14 and 15-17 age groups. This was a plus!

On the 7/19 cruise, DSD was 13 (and registered at Common Grounds), while there were two 12 yo at our table also. The 12 yo's were allowed to hang out at Common Grounds some and do many of the teen activities without any problem. I think this had been checked out by the parents, but it certainly was allowed on an informal basis at least.

It's good to hear they MAY be tossing around ideas about the 18-20 age range. We cruise in Feb and my son turns 18 in late December. I am anxious to see what changes are made to the Magic while in dry dock this month.

yeah we cruise in August and i'll be 18(by a few months). i'm thinking of going and talking to the common ground counselors if they don't have any activities for 18-20 yet. common grounds used to be 13-18, so i'm hoping they won't have a problem with it.
