Every year I like to give my kids a "nice" book (ie, one with a good message and/or real well written) that might not be on their list. I think I figured out something for my 12yo son and it will be easy to figure out one for my almost 6yo son, but I would love ideas for my soon to be 18yo daughter and my 15yo son.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

What about one of the "Chicken Soup" books? The stories in them are often short enough to get through in a few minutes, and they are always inspiring!
:)

I'll have to see which ones they have (I know one of them has the teen book), but there might be a college one that would be good for my DD.

Good idea!

Been There Should've Done That II

might be a good book for your daughter. It's a 5 time award winner and is full of tips for making the most of college. I got it for my DS who is 18, he said it was an easy fun read!

Are you looking for fiction or non-fiction? Biographies?

I'll be watching this thread, too.

Lynn, I'll look at the book. Is it more geared towards someone who is getting ready to go to college or is already there (she's a freshman).

Barb D, doesn't matter. The book I'm getting my 12yo son is Flush, a fiction book by the same author as Hoot (which he loved). In general I guess I tend to want non-fiction, but it sure doesn't have to be.

It has quotes from students already in college, I think it's geared for those in college already, it has advice on internships, making a choice about majors, jobs, professors, GPA etc. It's advice in short given excerpts
from students who have experience. Just a short read.
I can see if DS is finished with it, and send it to you.

I sent you a PM.

i always gave my kids hardcover classics. My daughter has a wonderful library ranging from Winnie the Pooh and Dr. Seus to Island of the Blue Dolphins and Little Women to the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare. (which she really loves).

Lynn, Don't take it away from your son! :teeth: Very nice offer, but he might still want to refer to the book. Ive read about it and my DD might be a little past it, but I'll put it in my Amazon wish list for my 15yo in a year or two. He's the type that would read the book and take it to heart.

J&D, got your PM. My 15yo is a hard one to buy for. He's interested in music (guitar, keyboard) and computer web design. Not so sure he would want a book about either of those, though. Last year I bought him a book about dealing with Tourette's (he has TS) and he liked that. He's hard to buy for, but not sure why because he's fairly open minded about reading new things.

I do like to give books that they will keep and/or that they will reread. It gets harder when they get older.

The problem with my 6yo is that we have so many books and really don't need any more, but if I'm getting the others books I also want to get him one. He's starting to read so maybe I'll get him something that he can read to me and that would hold his interest.

Make sure and check out the bargain section, then. There are several CHEAP computer books. Make sure and check out the music and fine arts section as well.

Then the Farmyard Tales Readers I mentioned would be great for him. Each page has 2 reading levels, one for beginners like him and one for advanced readers. You could read the book together. Also chek out Ted and Friends.
