My daughter is wanting a bunkbed & she is 11 yrs old.
My husband is afraid that she will not want them in a few years once she is teenager.
I saw a great set at our local Goodwill last night & I am going to have the make the decision today whether to get them or not because they will be gone (if it already is not). It is the wooden one with shelving on one side & desk attached on other side.
All of my friends have children the same age as mine, so I thought I would ask all of you out there who have teenagers.

Do teenagers like bunkbeds?

Thanks! :)

My son lost interest in his by the time he was a teen. If you get them, get the type that can be separated into twins. We have a set in our outbuilding that cannot and have the futon type bed on the bottom just taking up space.

If she doesn't like it when she's a little older she can always sleep on the bottom bunk. Plus having the extra bed if great for a teenager who has a friend sleep over. Before we moved last year my two girls shared a room with a bunkbed (they were 7 and 3 when we moved). They both usually slept together in the bottom bunk. Now my 5 year old daughter has the bunkbed in her room, she never sleeps in the top bed but it's an excellent spot to store all her stuffed animals.

I dunno about bunk beds, but my DD16 got her loft bed when she was 8 or 9 and I still can't get her to get rid of the loft, even though I have no idea how she squeezes up there to sleep (I'm 5'1" and I can comfortably stand under the loft, it's very high and close to the ceiling.)

We just bought our 14 year old a bunk bed this year. I was hesitant, telling her she would be over it soon, but so far so good. I would have preferred a regular bed with a platform with drawers or even a trundle, but this is what she wanted. It is unstained wood, and now she is trying to get us to paint it. (we are in the process of painting her old bed Mickey colors for her 3 year old little brother)

We have a loft bed that DS25 still would rather sleep in when he is around and we have a bunk bed that the bottom is a futon and stays up like a couch ( equals cool) that DD19 has.

My son has bunkbeds. He's only 7. I'm thinking ahead though, because he's tall already and Daddy is 6ft 3. So he's going to outgrow them, and need a much longer bed. It's a challenge though because he has the smallest bedroom in the house. I am really leaning towards a Loft bed, so we can utilize the space underneath, but as another poster mentioned, that won't leave much head room.
So my other thought is a double with a trundle for sleepovers. I can't see teens still loving bunks.. but I could be wrong. DD would have liked them at 11. But shortly after that she matured quite a bit and ALL of her interests changed.

Well, I guess I have a teen, barely. She is 13 but not in any hurry to act like a teenager. She basically has a loft twin bed with a queen mattress and box spring on the floor beneath it. She usually sleeps below, but slept up top Thursday night when her cousins were over and has stayed up there since. This week she toyed with the idea of taking out the mattress below and putting her desk underneath to make more room. However, the top bunk is really close to her low ceiling and I pointed out she's not going to get any smaller!

At this point I don't see her having a problem with the bunk bed as she progresses through her teen years. DH made the loft part and it would be a shame to remove it. It is nice to have the extra sleeping accomodations at times. Sometimes her sister joins her, and there is the rare sleepover. The top can be a good place for the Build A Bear collection too. Does your DD have friends over much? Or is she just intrigued (as many kids are) by the bunkbed concept?

Keep in mind that in the summer, it can get pretty warm on the top bunk. Also, a ceiling fan can get in the way.

DD is in a dorm now. She lofted her bed. Not because she likes to sleep up higher but to give her more floor space.

At home, she sleeps on the bottom bunk.

my boys had bunkbeds, now one has a loft bed and the other has the bunks, great for sleepovers, etc! neither one of them are tired of them, and I love the space they save!worst case....you can always resell them if she gets sick of them:thumbsup2

My girls had thekind of bunk beds where one bed come out, and there's a desk and some drawers on either side. when we moved, the girls had separate rooms, so DD8 has a regular bed, and DD16 sleeps in a loft bed with her desk underneath. It works well for her. Her room is long and narrow, so this gives her more floor space.

My boys (14 and 5) still share a room, and they have bunk beds.

I've had no complaints from any of the children about their sleeping arrangements.

Is the "bunk bed" you're thinking of getting actually 2 beds (a top and bottom bunk) or is it more of a loft bed with a desk and such where the bottom bunk would be? My 17 year old nephew sleeps on the top "bunk" of his bunkbeds, but he took the lower bed out and put a sofa there instead. He's almost 6' tall, and I have NO idea how he sleeps up there without smashing his head on the ceiling. He likes it, though. Does your DD want the bunk beds so she has space for a friend to sleep? My (now adult) nephews had bunk beds like an L shape when they were kids. It fit into the corner of the room, the top bunk going against one wall, the lower bunk going underneath perpendicular to it. It gave them more floor space but allowed for someone to actually sit on the lower bunk and not hit their head on the upper bunk. Since they were sharing a room bunks were their only option if they wanted any floor space.

My daughter had a loft bed through college and liked it fine. She had a futon that she put on the other side of the room and put her tv, desk, etc. underneath the futon. It worked very well in her fairly small room.

One thing I will add is that she and my husband built hers. She's tall, and we wanted to make sure it was long enough. I found the plans online and built the long version (similar to what they have in colleges).

I think I'm confused about the difference between loft & bunk.
There are two beds & the bottom one is not attached & can be rolled out.
My DD would want to sleep on the bottom & we need the top for when friends come over & like someone earlier posted the stuffed animal collection, ha ha!
Thanks for all of your responses.
I think I am going to go buy the beds when I get off work at 12 & I'm going to cry if it's gone!!!!!!

My DD14 just said this week she wants a bunk bed but the kind where the bottom is a futon so her friends have a place to sit or sleepy. Only prob is DD still falls out of bed and I dont feel comfortable having her sleep up top :rotfl:

My 2 oldest DD's shared bunk beds when they was little taking turns as to who slept on top. After we moved to bigger house we seperated the beds an both got their own room.

My oldest DD eventually got to tall for her bed but her younger sis loved the idea of bunk beds an having extra bed for when friends slept over which was just about every weekend.

Now my gsons are using the beds in seperate rooms, same house DD bought my house. 1 Gson will out grow the bed the other 1 might be short enough to always sleep in it he's takin after his daddy who is only like 5'3. He will prolly be the 1 who always wants his friends sleepin over too.
