Well it's happened my DD 13 has asked to wear make-up to 8th grade this year. We have said yes but only to eye make up and lip gloss. So I need to ask what kind of make-up do you wear and are you happy. We are looking at Isa Dora she likes the colors. I thought of buying MAC or Clinque which I wear but the eyeshadow she wants is younger (not brighter) so if she only uses it a week and then decides to quit I don't want to throw out my money. KWIM. So let's discuss when you allowed your girls to wear make-up and what they wore. Also throw in colors and brands. Thanks for the help.

My older DD started wearing make-up at the end of 7th grade. I took her to a local department store, and the lady at the Clinique counter did her make-up. She recommended different colors, and they tried them out. Basically she wore a little powder, eye shadow, mascara, and lip gloss throughout 8th grade.

No daughter here, but I do remember this stage... well.

I hit puberty well before all the other girls in my school. I had "acne" in 7th and 8th grade and was always very conscious about it. In 7th grade, Mom let me buy a compact just cover up there spots and blotches. We weren't allowed to wear make-up, so it was much and it couldn't be noticeable. I stuck with the CoverGirl stuff until higschool when I was allowed to wear it.

When I hit highschool, I went over the the MAC line and have stuck with it. The Studio Fix is awesome.Wear well, too. For eyeshadow though, I still ususlaly buy store brands because I like to change things up and don't want to spend a bunch of money on itand only wear it several times. I really like the Revlon eyeshadow for some reason. Lots of colors, like the trios, and wears well.

She should avoid pinks, reds, and purples as it will make her eyes look dropey and she'll look tired. When she hits an age that she's wearing a bit more and needs to look finished, be sure to show her how to put everything on. What's your decision on mascara?

As for lip gloss, I love the lip tints from Bath and Body Works. They're so nice, look great, keep your lips moisturized, and taste fabulous!

Check around if you have any outlet shopping around you. The make-up outlets usually carry the major brands at a fairly good price. The other option is to let her have any of the appropriate pieces from the free gifs you get with the promotional offers and let her decide what she likes.

Good luck to both of you :goodvibes

I started my nieces off with Bare Minerals foundation from Bare Escentuals. Both have Bare Skin eye color which is a natural looking color. Not sure how much "color" they wear (pinks, purples, blues etc)

Most important thing to tell her about wearing makeup is to TAKE IT OFF at night. Every bit, esp. mascara. BE says you can sleep in theirs but I still think they need the good habit of washing the makeup off thier faces. :)

Honestly at her age I would stick to drugstore brands (Cover Girl, Revlon, L'Oreal). She's so young and she's so new at this that I wouldn't sink too much money into stuff she's going to lose, break, and decide she doesn't like after a week!

After a while (maybe a year or so) when her tastes get more refined you can start looking at more high-end products.

She has gorgeous red hair! Ok had to brag. So the reason we gave in on makeup is that she has eyelashes(thick and long) but you can't see them. Also her eyebrows are extremely light. I am red headed as well so I know to only buy brown pencil and brown or brown black mascara. Thanks for the advise so far. Keep it coming.

She's still in her teens - why not just stick with the basic brands like Revlon or Cover Girl? They're easy on the budget, have a huge variety and you won't have to worry about the cost if she decides she doesn't like the color a week or two later. You could buy 3 times as much makeup there then you would if you went to a department store, plus there are some really good products out there!

Twin DD's (16) rarely wear any makeup because their athletics prevent them for having anything on their faces for any extended period of time. A little bit here and there, but nothing that they really get worked up over.

My girls all use the Cover Girl or Maybelline stuff, I'm not spending a fortune on makeup for kids. (they are 13, 16 and 18) 16 and 18 can now buy their own and they still buy the drugstore stuff. Heck I still buy the Maybelline mascara, can't find anything that works any better for me.

They wear face powder, concealer, lipstick or gloss in very neutral colors. A little bit of blush and mascara. My older 2 just started wearing shadow in the last few years.

I really enforced the good face cleaning routine though. I feel that is more important than the expensive makeups.

The best thing I ever did for my teen dd was to purchase Bare Minerals...
It has solved many.. many of our fights over make up... thank goodness!!

I am a redhead and I use BE too. It is the best match for my skin, eyebrows etc....

Good Luck!!

12 year old DD can wear powder, lip gloss, and "clear" mascara.

I told her she has to wait for high school for more, because I don't like the look of make-up on young girls, and am hoping she'll realize she's pretty without out it. But that's my thing.

My daughter just started wearing makeup gradually. She's 14. She wears really light (with a sparkle) eyeshadow and sometimes she wears eyeliner on the bottom. She likes light pink or peach lipgloss. She also wears some concealer if she feels she needs it, but she doesn't really need it too often.

She always looks completely appropriate, so I'm fine with it. If she wanted to wear foundation or powder-- if she felt her skin needed it-- I'd be okay. She looks perfectly natural and beautiful. Anyways, we're all olive skin toned here, and sometimes the color on her lips brightens up her face.

My little one (three) started asking for nail polish! I do her nails in pink. It's so funny because after a day or so it's chipped, and she looks at them and says, "It's all messed up. Messed up." And, I have to do them again! My oldest one was like that, too. Such girly-girls, you know?

When i was in school my DG (gandmother) started me out in Clinique (what all the ladies in my family use) and i haven't stopped since. it's a great way brand that offers a variety. She may not like the look of the colors now, but take her to the counter and they will do her make up (to your specifications IE..glosss and eyes only) and then she will notice how good it looks when you try something unexpected.

Revlon and Maybelline at that age. They have fun colors, too, and aren't as expensive. I can't imagine spending $20 on Clinique eye make up or lip gloss for a young teen.

With makeup it isn't so much what she wears but HOW she wears it. I would suggest taking her someplace where they will show her how to apply makeup properly (we all know she won't listen to mom about this kind of stuff :rotfl2: ). Most teen girls look so horrible with makeup because they gob on the eyeliner that is too dark for them and they look like raccoons.

My DD 16 has beautiful skin. She also has red hair but her's comes from a bottle and sets off her fair skin nicely.

She only wears eyeliner and mascara. It brings out her eyes and she looks very natural.

I'm a redhead also and use mostly bare esscentual products, but also really like www.justforredheads.com

They have great products in the right shades for us. I really like their mascara!

I would start her out on the cheaper drug store make up until she finds a style and products she likes. Then I would move onto the higher end cosmetics.

I think at that age it is more important to teach her how to play up her features and accentuate them rather than globbing on lots of color. I also would spend more money on the skin care products. They are so important!

At that age, only mascara and lipgloss on a regular basis. Later, as long as I don't notice the makeup, then they can wear it. If it's obvious, then they have to wash it off.
