Okay, I am taking my niece to buy an outfit for visitation and an outfit for the funeral of her mom.

This will sound frivolous, but does anyone have links to websites that show what's fashionable in dress-up clothes for teenage girls? I just want some general guidelines before we go to the 3 department stores (and one's a sort of TJ Maxx/discounter kind of store) in her hometown.

I'll probably buy whatever she likes, but advice would be nice, mostly in case she even asks my opinion. (She IS a teenage girl, after all.)

You could just go to any store that sells teen clothing and see what they have to offer. Places like American Eagle, Nordstrom, Macy's, Kohl's would all have photos online. For a funeral I would just get a nice pair of dress pants, a nice top and if you want, a jacket or something to go with the outfit. Honestly, most teen "fashion" isn't appropriate for a funeral :lmao:

I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

I would suggest either a shortish black skirt or trousers with a pretty blouse (you can get ideas of what's in style at www.abercrombieandfitch.com or www.americaneagleoutfitters.com, though I'm sure she'll know) with maybe a cardigan. They make stylish, cute cardigans.

Good luck.

My grandmother passed away shortly after my 17th birthday a few years ago. My mom took me to Banana Republic to get a very beautiful dress for the funeral. It was brown, with no sleeves (summer in southern CA), a modest V-neck, and a very pretty scarf that I figured into my hair. Why not try somewhere like Banana Republic or the Gap? They seem to have some very pretty, classic pieces that you can get for under $100 (or maybe a tiny bit above if necessary) that she can wear again if she needs to.

So sorry for your families loss. I'd check out Macys and kohls online for ideas, she may need a pair of shoes too... Poor dear.

Thanks golfgal and Liberty Belle.

Hmm. . .a nice cardigan and pants or a skirt sounds remarkably like what I have laid out to wear.

She may want skinny pants, so that and maybe a skirt, then get her to wear a red cashmere sweater I gave her mother for Christmas (red was her mom's favorite color), buy her a cute dark color cardigan or two and/or lend her one of my darkest cashmere cardigans.

She will probably only wear these outfits once. If I thought she wouldn't wrinkle her nose at my straight leg and boot cut black dress pants, I'd lend those to her. . .I might carry them with me anyway. She still wears boot cut jeans pretty frequently.

Why not. I'll just carry a bunch of things in a big suitcase and if we don't find anything she likes at the stores in town (JC Penney's, Stage and something TJ Maxxish), let her go through it and see if she wants to borrow any of it, then I can wear the rejects. We're close to the same size and wear the same size shoes.

Okay, I at least have some idea of what to steer her towards now: What I'm wearing, but with a younger touch. (I'll dig out some steampunkesque jewelry to throw in. That seems to be big right now.)

Thanks again!

I don't envy you at all for this task. What a very helpful aunt you are!

This dress is very similar to what 2 young ladies wore at the National Honor Induction ceremony at my DD's high school. And...my DD picked hers out, so it wasn't something that I "shoved at her to wear". Now, FWIW - the summer version of this had a little bit of a lacy back, but she wore a little black shrug with it.

This might work too:

And - something like this might be OK with a pair of gray or black slacks:

And...I do have a pic I could e-mail to you, real 16 year old girls, at a real funeral. (It is my DD and my niece at my uncles funeral from last summer.) If you are interested - please pm your email address.

Again - you are a great aunt for helping out. Your niece will appreciate this help forever. Sorry for your loss:grouphug:

I'm so sorry for your loss. I will keep your family in my prayers..esp. your poor niece:sad1:

I just attended a wake for my dd's best friend's grandpa and she was wearing black pants and a sweater. Her cousins were wearing leggings and a long top and one was wearing a sweater dress with tights. oh, these girls are 15/16.

Leggings! Oh that with a sweater dress would work beautifully on my niece! I will remember when we are trying on clothes to suggest leggings as a base piece and see what she thinks.

I'm sorry your niece and your family are dealing with all this.

My girls both hate leggings and would never wear them. I'd figure black pants or a black skirt with a dressy blouse. The dresses that all the teen girls see as stylish are short, strapless little numbers not suitable for a funeral (or much else that doesn't involve a pole, imo. ;)). The more tasteful dresses are ridiculed to no end.

Well, that's one thing I don't have to worry about with my niece. When she was in the womb she was so modest they didn't even know if she was a boy or a girl for months (had her legs drawn up and crossed every single time), and she hasn't changed any since.

I'll have to see what she thinks about leggings. I know several of the girls that came by Sunday to support her were wearing them, so I won't push them on her, but will see if she's interested.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss, your niece is so lucky to have a wonderful aunt like you to guide her through this. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

If you're going with black dress pants, a sweater/cardigan something like this might be nice:

If she likes the leggings and sweater idea, there are all kind of cute sweater dresses in stores right now! This sort of style could be cute.

And if she does want to go with a dress, maybe something like this with tights and a cardigan?

When I was fifteen, we lost one of my cousins to leukemia and I wore a dress and tights similar to the above outfit. It was only six years ago, so not too out of date.;)

I'm sorry for your loss.

Check Macy's clearance section for a dark skirt/pants. Often their prices are lower than TJMaxx, etc. It's crazy how cheap some of the clothes are (suit jacket for D for $8 recently).

All,

Thank you for the advice. We went yesterday and after going to EVERY big department store in the mall, niece saw a dress in this really cheezy-hooker-looking-dress store, but it had exactly ONE dress in the store that was perfect and niece just zoned in on it! It's one of those with the elastic at the waist that you cover with a big belt that the teenagers wear. The skirt only came to mid thigh, so we bought some long leggings to wear under it and she's putting one of those drapey sweaters over it.

clh2 - it looks a lot like the pictures you sent me, so thank you! Those were the perfect suggestions for look.

Honestly, most teen "fashion" isn't appropriate for a funeral :lmao:

It's not, but having an aunt who cares about her enough to take her out and buy her something nice to wear will likely help take her mind off the pain she is no doubt going through, at least for a little while. It will show her too, that she still has an adult in her life to spend time with who loves her.

i'm very sorry for your loss. i'm glad you were able to find something for your niece. that was very kind of you to do.
