Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Happy Monday cousins!! I hope all are well!

tiberius ~ How was spectating the tri? I want to try and spectate some of the Ironman that will be in NYC if I'm not scheduled to work!

Ffigawi ~ Mardid sounds incredible!!

Sara ~ Welcome!

Jen ~ How'd Broad Street go for you?

Moi ~ My Broad Street was incredible!! I posted my report on the weekend thread, so I won't repost it here. I surpassed my A goal and went sub-2 hours (ok, by only 39 seconds, but I did it)...and for the first time in a race over 4 miles had a sub-12 minute mile pace (11:56!!)!! And yes, I've already sent off my email with proof of time for Tower of Terror. I may be in the last corral where people provided proof, but I'll be in a proof-required one! :) Now to recoop before Chicago training starts...which I think is next week sometime. Maybe the week after.

Beth: Congrats on the superb Broad Street run:banana: Hoping you're resting up before you're off to train for Chicago.

John: Loved your race report, especially the pics, although it would be a hard sell on convincing my husband to let me travel for this one:rolleyes1 Sweet bling!!

Mel: I know you feel with the recent change is terrain and beginning a new job in the fall would leave you unprepared for the full in January at WDW but if you change your mind, I'd love to swog with you at the back of the pack. Truth be told, I am not technically medically cleared to attempt anything near 26.2 miles :confused3 so my training goals include not training one step more than it will take me to cover the distance within the imposed time limit. Hoping you give your local run/walk group a try. If nothing else, you can meet some great new people, even if you decide to bag it after a while.

Julie: Congrats on the return to running:cool1: Slow and steady will surely help you get back at it comfortably.

Jen: Hoping you found a good source for those discounted WDW tickets:hug:. Congrats to Sarah for getting past her state testing:thumbsup2

I've been faithful to my Galloway training plan, even working in the 2/1 run/walk segments. It's new to me, so it's been an adjustment, yet I'm conceding it's how I need to train in order to be realistic about my goals in relation to my current health status and all's working well:goodvibes

Hoping everyone has a great week and best of luck to all those training/tapering and racing this weekend:yay:

Thanks Sara, that would be great! My knee is doing well so I'm feeling more confident with the ability to train. My biggest roadblock is the job. Our very first PA class starts in Jan. Orientation is the week before marathon weekend and the first day of classes is the day after the marathon. Since this is the first class, I expect time off is not going to be an option. We're definitely planning to come...just don't know about running that weekend yet since I'm sure we'll have to fly back Sun night. How's your comeback going so far?

Richard...how is the race taper going? Ready for next week?

Jackie...I didn't register for the race tomorrow since I didn't know how my knee was going. They're having a 5K for cystic fibrosis in our neighborhood next month and one FLAT race at the PTI airport on the runway that I'm shooting for. Are you doing the half next month?

Jeanne...how ya been? How's the grand baby?

What's new with everyone else? Marathon weekend plans coming together? It's almost time for the 7 month booking window!

Richard...how is the race taper going? Ready for next week?

Well, since you asked, Mel...... ;-)

It's been both a normal taper and a strange taper at the same time. It seems I keep having about every possible ache and pain come and go from time to time. I feel 100% great at times and I feel completely flat at times. As the taper goes on I find myself making more risk-averse decisions so I will be less likely to have an injury this close to the race. Last night I narrowly avoided a collision while driving home in the rain--by swerving across a grassy median into the other side of the road! Today I made the decision to wait until late morning to ride my bike to allow the roads to be dry from yesterday's rain. However, near the end of my ride I got a flat tire--my first in 2 1/2 years and the first on this bike. Also, I discovered my rear brakes were loose and took it in to the shop for a quick adjustment. That bike shop was so busy with Ironman prep work but they made time to fix mine right then!
Anyway, I have a busy work schedule for the first half of the week to keep my mind busy, which is probably good. Although I have been presenting a calm demeanor recently, I am getting more excited every day. Last year I went into the race over-trained and under-rested, a mistake I am working on this year. I believe I feel better rested today than I was on race day last year, and I still have 6 days to go to be more ready--not to mention just being in better shape than I was a year ago as well! (Actually, I almost feel good enough to take on almost any challenge in the world right now!)

Also, I am renting a tracking chip from myathletelive.com so my friends and family can track me more easily (How's that for pressure to do well?). I will post the link details here when I have them.

I think I over-answered that one! ;-) See, there's my nervous energy at work right there! As to your actual question of am I ready?.......Oh yeah, I am! Bring it on!!!

Good luck this weekend!!!

Yeah, I'm doing the half next month. And one tomorrow. Realized a couple of weeks ago that I could up my Fanatic level with 6 races in 6 months, and I was only missing May. So I started looking... and there's a local half that runs through Umstead Park (LOTS of hills.) Seemed silly to travel if I could run in town, so I'm paying money to run where we train. And then turning around 2 weeks later and doing it all over again, on a slightly less hilly course!

Hey guys, I'm just doing a quick post to tell everyone that I finished Ironman Texas this weekend in 13:41:06 for a big PR over last year. I'll be back in a few days with a link to my race report after I've had more time to rest.

New PR! Super congratulations to you! :woohoo:

Is it sad that I was looking for a 'like' button on Richard's post :confused3

Two weeks with no posts? Come on, cousins, we can do better than that. Where is everyone? What have you been up to?

I just got back from a 2-week business trip in the US. Ok, so maybe only 10 days of it was strictly for business, which left me several days to go goof off in Vegas. :cool1:

Now I'm back in the land of heat and more heat, trying not to cry when I look at the thermometer and my training plan for Dublin and wonder how miserable those long runs in August are going to be.

They may be long and miserable (hey, that sounds like my summer plan for my fall marathon!!!) but I bet you will be more prepared because of it. BTW, I still have your Thin Mints. ;)

Wow, I've missed a lot. Just got back from our Oxford trip, the third trip since I last posted. And the most, er, interesting. It involved me, DOOD, three other faculty members, 28 college undergrads and an incompetent travel agent/tour guide. It also involved me getting ill (and losing 4 pounds during the trip), confronting said travel agent, and becoming known to the students as both "snarky" and a "truth-teller." All in all, a memorable trip I wouldn't want to repeat. And DOOD owes me a real trip to England.

All that aside, it's good to catch up with the cousins!

Maria: Happy Birthday, Maria! :cheer2:

Jeanne: First, happy happy on all your news. Your new grandbaby, your son's accomplishments, and a belated birthday whoo hoo! :thumbsup2

Mel and Richard: So cool you are CLIF Ambassadors. Well deserved!

Beth, Kira, Jen: I say this every year, but Broad Street is on my list for a mini-destination race. One year I'll be around for it!

Beth: Congrats on your sub-2 Broad Street! I'd not heard of Team Breakthrough. I admire you for signing up for the Chicago race, especially with your schedule, and know your friend's death will inspire you every step of the race. :)

Jen: That's very cool that DCL's Castaway Cay 5K is an official 5K, as I think of runDisney races as a gateway drug to other races. And the Goofy, huh? I'm not surprised. (We've not signed up for races yet, as usual. *sigh*) What a race schedule you have for the late spring/early summer!

How did your daughter's writing test go, btw? It IS a shame that testing can create such anxiety, esp. as it can make school and learning things to dread. You've been such an advocate for her, and it's made such a difference, and I hope everything goes/went swimmingly.

Sara: Woo Hoo! A belated welcome, but sincere nonetheless! I'm glad you're here - and even more glad you're doing the WDW Marathon in January. I have no doubt your muscle memory and experience will help the race rock for you. (Plus, your 3 miler was just great!) And WISHers, of course! :cool1: Plus, I'm super-impressed you've signed up for the distance, given your medical history, AND are going to train smart! You still liking Galloway?

Rose: Your improved time on the KDF is amazing, and a reminder of just how rough last year's KDF was for you!! Have you decided about January yet? I know you love the W&D, and must be looking forward to that one!

Rose & Jackie: I'll be at WDW in October, but I don't have dates yet. A lot depends on DOOD's schedule.

Jackie: I just love hearing that your family is doing races together, and I have no doubt that a sub-30 5K is entirely do-able for you! (Even if it's next year due to your training schedule.)

Richard: I'm so sorry that I haven't been around to wish you luck (not that you needed it) with your Ironman. I was so glad you made sure your bike has been fine-tuned for the race! A big, belated but sincere DISboards congrats on your PR! You never cease to amaze me!

Mel: I can only imagine how busy you've been, adjusting to your new life and digs. I haven't kept up with your rehab. How's the knee doing? Last time I knew you were focusing on strength training, I think. Anything specific? Did you join the neighborhood group?

That's a tight, busy work schedule for WDW Marathon Weekend. First PA class - new program?

Julie: Great news with getting back to running, the 7 miles, and the end (fingers crossed) of chronic PF! How have subsequent runs been?

John: Congrats on Madrid. You make me want to budget for more destination races. I don't envy you your summer training temps, though. :scared1:

AFM: Just trying to get back in the groove of things. Lots of things happening on the home front that may affect travel and other plans. Including that the president of DOOD's university got fired, and the uni's external audit, both of which creates a lot of instability and changes. Including news of DOOD's tenure bid, with an extended notification deadline to take into account the provost has stepped into the job. And his contract negotiations for his 1/2 time administrative position...also delayed.

And while these things don't directly affect me or my work, they do have a tsumani-sized ripple affect at home, KWIM? Hopefully there will be good news soon.

Don't worry, Debra, I think you've been here more frequently than I have  I'm surprised my "Team Ohana" logo hasn't been reposessed...

Definitely one of those "life takes over" times this Spring -- but Congrats to everyone who has been having these fabulous races, good luck with summer training, and Thank You! for the excellent birthday wishes! It was a lovely day, and dh and I had a nice day getaway to Portsmouth NH. We might have also picked up the number for the 10K he's running this morning, but mostly it was all about us strolling among the shops and relaxing in the sunshine.

I will try to be a better cousin. I have GS thin mints in my freezer, too...

Maria :upsidedow

Richard - thank you for reminding me about the Thin Mints. Obviously, I totally forgot to meet up with you while I was in Houston. :(
