Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Hey cousins!!

It's been a while. Sorry! Life, you know?!?!?!?

I hope everyone's been doing well!

Re: my time in the 5K, that super fast pace was only for the last .1-ish of a mile. :) I can't do that for long at all!!

Training for Broad Street has been going pretty well. My left piriformis (I think) is a little whiny today, so I'm taking a URD. It seemed the right thing to do, especially with a 10K on Saturday. I'm doing some gentle stretching and I think am about to bond with the heating pad and then stretch a little more. Maybe bond with the foam roller...we shall see with that.

I'll try to be better about checking in!!

Congrats, Richard! That's really cool. I can't live without my CLIF bars, goo, and bloks, and now I've got another reason to love them. :)

I just wanted to drop in and say hello, sorry for being away for so long, it's bee a busy few weeks.

Richard: Congrats on the Clif representation and on your awesome 70.3:cool1:

Jeanne: Glad you are feeling better with the meds, I hope it burns itself out quickly so you don't need medication for long. Huge congrats on the grandson :goodvibes enjoy being with your family.

Lisa: It was nice to see you, at least briefly on the course of April Fool's, always good to see a friendly face.

AFM: I ran the April Fool's Half in Atlantic City on April 1st and got a new PR on the very nice, flat course. 2:06 is now my time to beat. :joker:

We just got back from a 7 day cruise on the Fantasy which was really nice. The ship is beautiful and Disney does it right. :beach: The health center on the ship is very nice and I was able to run each day and shower in the spa changing rooms, super nice! They have now made the Castaway 5K "an official runDisney event" so it now has bibs and a little plastic medal at the end, kind of a nice touch. I did, however eat way too much and now have to get back on track with eating right and losing these extra few cruise pounds.

We did sign up for Goofy and are looking forward to that race. Now to unpack and do laundry...

Would you allow me to join the family if I answer the required questions? :)

Name: Sara Roberts
Day Job: Stay-at-home mom, part-time student

Location: Lake George, NY
Favorite race you ever ran: Grandma's Marathon, Duluth, MN
Best recovery food or beverage: Pancakes

Races Planned this year: Unsure at this point
Meaning of DIS screen name: It's my family member's initials plus my last name abbreviated.

I am WISH'er from way back who has been completely away from running for 3 years due to health issues and I've decided to run the WDW Marathon again in January so I'm looking for a place to find some support as well as accountability on this journey back to endurance running. Sort of feeling like a born again marathon virgin (I ran 8 marathons prior to my cancer diagnosis) so I am hoping that muscle memory will assist me in getting up enough endurance to be able to cover the 26.2 within the time limit. I just dusted off my Garmin this week and have committed to using a Galloway plan just to finish the race. Looking forward to spending time here and keeping up to date on everyone's progress in order to inspire myself to keep moving towards my goal:banana:

Jenn: Congrats on the PR:cool1: ARE you running MCM this year?

Jeanne: Congrats on your grandson's arrival:love: Keeping you in prayer re: your ongoing health issues.

Richard: Congrats on the CLIF Ambassadorship:thumbsup2 as well as the amazing tri finish!! I've ran MCM and stayed at the Hampton Inn in Crystal City. It was an easy walk to the metro, yet getting back to the hotel via the metro in Rosslyn was a nightmare. If I had to do it over again, I'd try to get a hotel in Rosslyn so post-race you could simply walk back to your room. Therefore, I like Jackie's suggestion of the Hyatt Arlington Key Bridge.

Debra: Happy belated birthday to DOOD!!

I'll try my best to catch up on this thread in the near future and be an active participant. I will be doing 3 miles tomorrow and am vowing to run at least every other day until it becomes a regular part of my life again. Happy and scared to be taking the plunge :faint:

How are you all?:goodvibes

I ran the KDF 1/2 today about 30 minutes faster than last year.:goodvibes So very, very happy. And it was a lot more fun without the constant pain!

Nicole--Have you tried yoga or piyo yet? I hate it. But it has been the key to dealing with the itbs for me. I dealt with a nasty flare up again after Princess, but had NO issues today.:goodvibes Basically, if I can't bend over and put my fingertips on the ground I don't run. The key seems to be having no tightness in my back. The great part--I am doing so much better that I only had to stretch about 10 minutes before the race today. For short distances (under 5 miles) I run straight. Any thing longer I do intervals. I ran 2 walked 30 sec today and finished with a 2:14:10 time. I have met so many women with itbs. It is really a cruddy thing to deal with!

We are still debating January. we have a reservation at Boardwalk. And are leaning towards going, but just haven't registered yet.

Welcome to the new folks and I hope everyone is doing well!

Sara - :welcome: It's great to see you back here! How are you doing? It's great that you're planning to run in January. And I think Galloway is a great way to do it. (I might be biased - this season will be my 6th year running with our local Galloway group... :confused3)

Rose - Congratulations on your time today! That's terrific, and even more terrific that you're able to do it without pain.

Jenn - 2:06! Wow!

We briefly discussed doing Goofy in 2013, but have pretty much committed to returning to Jacksonville in February to do the 26.2 with Donna again. We've been telling everyone what a great race it is, and trying to talk a huge group from here into going, so we feel kinda obligated to go! Bill wants to do Goofy again, so we're thinking 2014.

The entire family did a 5K this morning, and I was hoping for my first sub-30 minute. My PR is a 30:51, and I felt pretty good about my chances of at least a PR. Then I decided to be nice and ran the first mile with DD, and reached the first mile mark at 10:31. Oops. :worried: Even though I left her shortly after that, by then it was too late to make up the lost time, and I ended up with a 30:59. :(

We've booked a family trip to WDW in October - first time we'll be there for JUST a vacation in 5 years. We're very excited!

Jackie

Jackie - Sorry you missed your PR it should be easy the next time given that you were just a few seconds off and you ran an easier first mile.

Rose - 30 minutes is a great improvement over last year!

Sara - Welcome! Great to have you here. Unfortunately, I likely won't be able to follow all the good MCM advice I've gotten here. :-( I am going with a running group and most of them want to stay stay in a different area and believe the metro system will be a good way to get around for the race. Essentially, I've been outvoted. My other choice is to be anti-social and not join the rest of them.

I am winding down my Ironman training with a 5-ish hour bike ride today and a 16 mile run yesterday. Tomorrow begins my taper with the race coming up in just less than 3 weeks. At this point I am very ready for this taper and am looking forward to race day.

Rose: Congrats on the KDF PR:cool1:

Jackie: Even though you didn't PR today, at least you ran it with family:banana: WDW with no racing involved is a good thing as well so I know you'll have a blast in October.

Richard: MCM will be great no matter where you stay and the metro will work fine for you. I did like our Crystal City location as well. Enjoy your taper!!

I am so proud to post that I've completed my first 3 mile run in 3 years:love: Splits were 10:57, 10:42 & 10:25. Hoping this is a good sign of things to come.

Hoping everyone has a great week of training/tapering, etc.:goodvibes

Happy Monday cousins!!!

Busy times all around it seems! Great job to those who've been racing recently (I will do personals soon!!)!! And good luck to all those who have races coming up!

Between teaching, working at Disney Store, and training for Broad Street, I've been crazy busy. And just when I thought things might settle down for a while, I took the plunge and signed up to run Chicago with Team Breakthrough (American Brain Tumor Association). So now ToT will be a glorified, supported training run with bling. LOL. I lost my best friend to a brain tumor right before I turned 5, so it's been a cause of mine for a long time, and while I'm scared even more than when I registered for my first full last year (WDW) just based on the sheer numbers, it's something I'm just feeling like I'm being called to do at this point in my life.

Gotta go teach now! Have a great day all!!

Hey Sara!! Welcome back! Great to see you around here.

I feel like I've forgotten everything. I've been rehabbing my knee and working on a book chapter so feeling really out of it. Sounds like everyone has been busy.

Jackie..congrats on your race! I'm thinking about doing a 5K in Raleigh next weekend. Not for time, just to get back out there.

Richard...how are you feeling going into this race?

Jeanne....glad to see you're feeling better.

I'm the other Clif rep, but haven't had a lot of training or events to pass out stuff. I did take some to my PT :thumbsup2

It's great to see all of the activity around here again :yay:

Sara: Welcome back :goodvibes It's great that you are getting back to running and that your health is cooperating. Yes, I will be doing MCM this year. I'm pretty excited as I've heard so many good things about the race. I have made the decision to do one full aside from WDW each year where I try to run for time. That way I feel like I can just relax and enjoy Disney. Strange logic the notion of enjoying a full, but...

Jackie: Your 5K sounds like fun and so close to your PR, I'm sure you can get it next time. Running with family (and friends) is often more important than the 1-2 minutes on the clock.

Rose: :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 for your awesome race. It is so nice to see you not in pain and happy about an event.

Beth: You sound really busy! I'll be at Broad Street too and will keep my eyes open for WISH green. Your post makes me want to hit the Disney Store for some reason, although the closest one is Cherry Hill which is really not all that close :confused3

Mel: I hope you are adjusting to your new home/job/state. What are you writing?

Richard: Enjoy the taper, you've earned it and I'm sure will reap the rewards on race day. I'll be following you virtually.

As for me, I've been crazy busy too. We had a fantastic cruise on the Fantasy over spring break and I've been trying to get things back into some sense of order at home. I ran a half at Rutgers on the 22nd as a sort of spur of the moment decision. I graduated from RU and it was nice to be back on campus. I was not even close to a runner when I was a student but I would tell myself I was going to get in shape and swear to take the steps and run. The "runs" lasted less than a mile and my attempts at the steps (I lived on the 10th floor) never made it more than a week. It was really nice to go back and see how far I've come. It was wet and cold for the race, but I enjoyed it in a strange kind of way. Next up for me is Broad Street followed by Run for the Dream in Williamsburg on the 20th and the ODDyssey Half on the 27th. It's going to be a busy month! The first hurdle of the month, however will be state testing at school. My daughter has struggled with writing and is super stressed about this test (such a shame at 8 years old). I've been trying to channel my inner cheerleader for her and let her know that this is really not as big a deal as the school is making it out to be. Tough to make a kid believe that as long as she does her best I'll be proud of her.

My other challenge is trying to find discounted WDW tickets for a coworker. She works as a medical assistant in my office and has very little money. She desperately wants to take her 5 year old to WDW and will be an hour away for a family wedding but can't afford the tickets. I offered to help her pay, but she doesn't want to "take my money," so I'm looking for some other deal that I can point her toward. I looked at AAA and Undercover Tourist as well as a deal listed on Mousesavers for donating to Florida Hospital for Children (which is what I'm leaning toward and just telling her I made a donation and she can have the tickets). Any other ideas for a 2 day ticket?

Jen ~ Cool! I don't have WISH gear yet. I'm still deciding if I'm wearing my Front Runners New York shirt (either t or singlet) or my lavendar Run Happy shirt or my coral and white sleeveless. It will likely depend on the weather. What corral are you? I'm in Pink Bib 35199.

Hello Cousins,

I'm sorry for not being around and posting more. I'm hoping to do better in the future. Spring always gets so busy with the kids, sports, activities, etc.

Sara - :welcome:

Jeanne - I said it on FB, but I'll say it here too: Congrats on your beautiful grandchild! :goodvibes

Jackie - Sorry you didn't get your PR, but running with the family sounds like great fun. :thumbsup2

Jen - Great time on your half! Wow! How nice of you to try to help your coworker find affordable Disney tickets.

Richard - Enjoy your taper. I'm always in awe of your training and racing schedules. :worship:

Rose - Congrats on your great time. Shaving 30 min off is impressive! :thumbsup2

It looks like we have a few new cousins here and I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

As for me, I feel like I finally have something to post. After not being able to run from Sept-Jan due to plantar fasciitis in both feet, I am happy to report that I'm getting back to running slowly but surely. I've been running 3 days a week, keeping my weekday runs to only 3-4 miles. On Saturday, I ran 7 miles, which is the longest I've run in ages, and my feet felt pretty good. I'm cautiously optimistic that I may be able to run a marathon again, either this January or January of 2014.

Hello to Debra, Corinna, Jen, Maria, Mel, and everyone else!

Mel - Which 5K are you looking at? DH briefly considered a 10K this morning, but I may have guilted him out of it. I told him to do it, but I wouldn't agree to do it with him, so he decided he'd just run for free instead! There seem to be infinite possibilities to race for the next few weekends. I just signed up - very reluctantly - for the Midtown Half on June 3. I'm doing it only to pace a friend who's been struggling with her times, and she desperately wants a PR before she runs Chicago this fall.

Jen - So you're going back to Williamsburg! We considered it, but Annie will be in Hilton Head by then, so it just didn't work out for us this year. I'd kinda like to run the half, since I only did the 8K last year, but maybe next year... Hope your daughter can relax and do well on her testing. I know this is a big deal!

Richard - After having stayed both places in DC, I'd be anti-social. Just sayin'! :bitelip: The Hyatt is right across from the metro stop, so you can still access all of the city, and even use it to get to the race start. It's only at the end that any of it matters... But you will get the chance to say "I told you so" if you go with the vote.

Julie - Great that you're finally back running! Take it slowly, and stretch the feet. Do NOT let PF rear its ugly head again!

Beth
- Congratulations on signing up for Chicago. Sounds like a great cause. Almost all of my close running friends are doing it this year, but I just didn't feel the pull to do it. MCM is big enough for me. And we're going to be at WDW that weekend now, so I think I'll be very happy with my decision!

Sara - Great times for your 3 mile run!

It was fun running with DD, but the 5K I ran last weekend is really the only one I bother with all year. There's something about this distance running thing that just doesn't allow for short, fast races in the schedule, so I pretty much had one shot at the PR this year. And the weather was almost perfect (although I seem to be attracting wind this year :confused3) So I'm still kicking myself for not leaving her earlier! She's an adult - she didn't need Mom to run with her!

Jackie

thanks! Just wanted to clarify, did not shave 30 minutes off my fastest time. I was still slower than my fastest time. Just shaved 30 minutes off my abysmally slow time at the KDF last year. I really had no business doing that race last year. I was in so much pain.

Mike and I did a 30 minute recovery run today and I am still feeling great. I even signed up for W&D. I could get used to being uninjured.:thumbsup2 It's kind of fun.

Jackie--I'm sorry you missed the pr. When will you be there in October?
We have Tomapalooza in October--Me, Mike and several college seniors with a 2BR at BW with a BW view.:goodvibes Lots of grown up drinks will be consumed.:thumbsup2

Richard--enjoy that taper!

Sara--congrats on the 3 miles!

Beth--congrats for signing up for Chicago with Team Breakthrough.

Mel--how is rehab? How is the knee? My goal is to not visit the pt again this year.:goodvibes

Jen--I hope things go ok with the testing and it's not too stressful for dd.

Julie--I dealt with pf and a fat pad injury in the same foot last year. It stunk! I am glad you are up and running again.

I hope everyone is enjoying spring.:goodvibes

Rose - I just went back and looked at your earlier post. It looks like we'll miss each other by a week. Bummer! I'd love to participate in Tomapalooza! Or more accurately, DD would probably LOVE to participate. We're arriving on the 3rd and leaving on the 9th. We'll have a drink in your honor though!

Jackie

You're right....I think there's a 5K every weekend somewhere for the next few months. I may do the one at PTI in June and there's one through our neighborhood the next weekend. I wanted to do Midtown, but the knee has put me out for awhile. I did register for RnR Savannah, but still looking at Ramblin Rose. My knee is still not fond of hills.

Rose...thx for asking. It's better but still not fabulous. I have 2 more weeks for the knee, but the PT is talking about submitting to insurance for my foot so I can work on stregthening that side and take pressure off the right. I'm glad your rehab has gone well! That's encouraging.

JenB...we have to recertify every six years. I did an endocrine chapter for a review book a friend of a friend is putting together. I'm happy not to be drowning in adrenal/pituitary info anymore :thumbsup2

Jeanne...how's that new grandbaby?

My neighborhood has a FB page and there's buzz about starting a running/walking group since there seem to be many of us running now that the weather has warmed up. I'm always self-conscious about running with people since I'm slow and do the R/W thing. We'll see how it goes

Hey cousins! Glad to see all the great updates and news that everyone's been sharing recently.

Richard - I'm going to try to get to the Woodlands to watch the Ironman while I'm in Houston. I'll understand if you don't have my Girl Scout cookies there waiting for me. :)

Sara - Welcome to our little family! Nice to have you join us.

Jen & Beth - Good luck at Broad Street! Hope you both have great races.

Mel - Congrats on being a CLIF rep! They make the best stuff. I'm bringing an empty suitcase with me on my trip to Houston just so I can stock up for the summer.

AFM - I was in Madrid last weekend for the marathon, and if you ever want to run a destination marathon, I highly recommend this one. Great course, fabulous city, and almost perfect weather. Can't get any better than that. I've got a race recap posted here.

John - I do still have your Girl Scout cookies, but you're right in that they will not be on the IMTX course with me. ;) I hope I see you out there....of course I may have trouble recognizing anyone by the time I hit the run. :rotfl2:

Mel - Good luck with the new running group and the whole CLIF bar thing as well! I am still feeling tired and worn down, but that is right where my coach says I should be right now. I am feeling good about my race day chances.

Rose - You're doing Wine and Dine! Nice!

Jackie - I am weighing my "antisocial" options, but I will likely go with the group.

Jen - You've been all over the place lately! :) Thanks for planning to track me on race day, I will try to not keep you up too late!

AFM - I've decided to spectate a local tri tomorrow instead of compete, as I wind my way through the taper. I'll be there supporting a friend who is doing her first triathlon, as well as a bunch of my other local tri friends.
