Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Jen - on the plus side, now you've got Memorial Day weekend off and nothing to do. ;)

For those who haven't seen it on FB yet, here's a picture of the medal holder a friend of mine made for me to show off my Texas Marathon Challenge medals. Once I get my official jacket, I'll share pictures of that too. In case you're wondering (and even if you're not), the five medals are from RnR San Antonio, Texas Trails 50k, Houston, Austin, and Davy Crockett. And no, I'm not doing this again next year. :)

Very cool medal holder, John!!!!

Glad you enjoyed your cruise on the Dream, Jen. We are doing back-to-back sailings beginning next Sunday......which means I'll be racing in Williamsburg exactly one week later! How's that for an incentive to exercise and eat well! And although I'm sorry you inadvertently booked 2 races for the same day, I am selfishly pleased you decided to hang on to the Williamsburg one. See you soon!

Love the crazzzzy runners!

Just talked to Aldisneygirl - she says thanks for the positive thoughts - she will be driving back to her home today - she is in north Alabama, and said while her home got the winds, etc, her immediate area didnt have a touch down, but the county did have a tornado touchdown! :scared1: So much damage, she is more concerned about Tuscaloosa Alabama and all the devastation there

Runners are a special kind of crazy, and WISH'ers are a great family!

Jen - Oh no! Sorry about the double-booking. Hopefully you'll have a great time at the Williamsburg and be able to take it easy Memorial Day weekend.

Jeanne - I'm so jealous of your back-to-back cruises. How exciting. If I don't get a chance before you leave, have a wonderful time!

John - the medal holder is awesome! Congrats on all those races.

AFM - still working towards a 10k on Memorial Day weekend - hoping the injuries allow this. Training is going okay, not great, but not bad. DH did his first ever race this past weekend - the Get in Gear 10k in Minneapolis. So now we're planning our summer race schedule and continuing our plans for the Wine & Dine.

John--what a great friend. I love the medal holder!:goodvibes

Nicole--I am so sorry you are dealing with itb stuff. It really stinks. I am officially resting for the month of May (though I might sneak in a mile or two when we are at BWV later this month). ITB pain in my opinion ranks right up there with labor pains. I have never had pain like that except for when I had DS. I hope it feels better soon.:goodvibes

Jen--have you figured out what you are doing for Memorial day?:thumbsup2 That stinks that they both ended up being the same weekend!
****
Well I have been the very absent cousin. Honestly, I have been barely holding it together recently. Between dealing with going g-f, lots of drama with our college student, and the itbs, I have just been spending my time having one big old pity party.

Long story short. My second set of gluten tests came back positive for gluten sensitivity. I will never know if I have celiac disease, because I will never go back on gluten for 6 weeks in order to have a biopsy. But I can live with the results. The tests showed moderate malabsorption which really explains a lot of the symptoms I was having. I am very happy to say that since going g-f in February my hair is growing back, my nausea after running is gone, my nasty runner's trots are gone, brain fog mostly gone, and my irrgeuluar heart beat--gone. The diet is a huge adjustment, but worth it!

The itbs is still sticking around, so I am resting in May. I'm going to pool run and ride the bike at the Y some and maybe even ride my bike outside some. And I'm sure my chiropractor will be torturing me some more.:thumbsup2

But, the good news--I was able to complete the KY Derby 1/2 on Saturday. I was 30 min slower than Princess and in a lot of pain, but I finished. Such a weight off my back. Everytime I have thought of doing that race I backed out and I was starting to feel like such a failure. My knee was not at all happy with me and I am paying for it today, but I did it. I feel a little more in control of my life for now, so that's a good thing.:goodvibes

Good luck to everyone with races coming up! We are probably going to do W&D and I might attempt a 10k in July. We'll see how the knee is doing.:goodvibes

Rose, have you thought about doing yoga to help with your ITB problems? There are some poses that are very good at stretching your ITB and strengthening the muscles in the surrounding areas (glutes, hips) and your core to keep the problem from popping up again. You might also want to focus on landing more on your forefoot when you run. That's what my coach told me to do when I had ITB problems a few years ago, and it really seemed to work well.

I have been thinking about it, especially since I can't run for a while. Mike goes to a class in the morning before work and I might go with him. Our Y does yoga in the dark--which I am not a big fan of, but I might try it. And I know my form has been suffering and I am probably heel striking more. With no race coming up, I am trying to look at this as starting from scratch with a chance to fix some things.:goodvibes Mike is looking at doing a Chi workshop, so maybe he will learn some good stuff there as well.

Thanks for the reminder about yoga.:goodvibes

John: I love the medal holder, looks awesome! You are right, now I have a day off (I still have to work Sat and Mon, so the whole weekend is not free but I have to party on Sunday).

Jeanne: Enjoy the Dream! We had a blast and I'm sure you will too. God luck keeping up with the exercise on the ship. All I can say is those Castaway Cay 5Kers were pretty darned fast, but the gym was really nice and there is a walking/jogging track all the way around deck 4. We look forward to seeing you in VA :)

Nicole: I hope the ITB gets better soon.

Rose: Glad the gluten free is working so well for you and that life is feeling more controlled, that is always a good thing! Congrats on the KY Derby Half :woohoo:

Jen: interesting story about our experience with the Castawy Cay 5K. We did it in October of 2009 (just a week before the NYC marathon) so I was at the peak of my training........ and still, John and I were dead last! That said, at least we did the entire course. There were some runners ahead of us that were always within our sight. Exiting the bike trail you were supposed to make a right and go all the way down to Serenity Bay before coming back. Well, those buggers just turned left and took a short cut back! We didn't mind being last, but now we were sooooo far behind, when we got to the finish area everyone else (even the cast member) was gone! Stuff like that is so annoying. Why sign up if you're not gonna do the whole thing. At least we got our certificate, which we had truly earned.

Rose: glad to hear the gluten-free diet is working for you. That's a discipline that I would find so hard to follow. Kudos to you.

This made me think of the story from a few years ago about the charity group that directed their runners across the National Mall to miles off the Marine Corps marathon and enable them to finish before the cutoff time. What sense of accomplishment do you get from a certificate or a medal knowing that you haven't really earned it? If I remember correctly, the leader of the charity said the runners deserved the medals because they were making a great effort to finish on time. Methinks she forgot that they're called "finisher" medals, not "people who tried" medals. :)

John - that is a great medal holder! I have to agree with you on the MCM finisher medal issue, to cheat your way across the race course is to cheapen the accomplishment of others if you get the same reward.

Nicole - good luck gearing up for your coming 10K this month.

Rose - you had a lot of good news in your post, so congratulations for working on those!

AFM - training for the IM keeps on going.... Fortunately, my taper period started this week, and just as I was starting to feel Ike a zombie from all my training. Amanda (DD, 22) is looking at taking a temp job in Scranton, PA for the summer and I would help her drive up around the Memorial Day weekend and fly back. (yeah, I volunteered for that one!) If anyone has some advice on the drive from Texas or the Scranton, PA area, I'd love to hear it.

Hmmm, it has been almost 5 days since I posted and nobody else seems to have been around. Don't I just feel like a thread-killer!:rotfl:

I hope all the mothers out the mothers out there had a good Mother's Day!

Don't worry, Richard, I won't let you kill the thread, that's my job :rotfl: Enjoy your taper, you have clearly earned it!

John -- I had a friend who did her very best, but was swept during the Princess this year. They gave her a medal, but she was very uncomfortable having it and didn't wear it. You are right, at least with her experience, people who don't earn them aren't really happy about having them. ::yes:: Let me add my praise for the medal holder -- very nice!

Jeanne and JenB -- I am so impressed you ran the Castaway Cay 5K! When we were there (ok, this was before I started running), I couldn't begin to imagine running in that heat! :sad2:

Rose -- I love yoga! I recommend getting a good dvd from Netflix and giving it a try at home alone. Then you can try at your own rate, do something over if you like it or don't get it the first time, etc. :goodvibes

Nicole -- It sounds like you are progressing nicely, I hope your 10K is doable and fun! :cool1:

Jeanne -- I believe you are livin' the Dream right now, I'm sure you are having a wonderful time!

JenB -- I haven't had a chance to "pull a Jen" yet, but I'm sure it's in my future ;)

Julie -- Dennis is doing the Run to Remember, and the weekend before he's doing the Harpoon 5M. He has 3 friends coming down from NH (including my BIL) to do the Harpoon with him. I'm sure it will end in a barbecue in my backyard.

:wave2: to Corinna, Debra, Jackie, Mel

And now a moment of silence for the Stargate franchise -- SGU airs it's series finale tonight. :sad1:

Maria :upsidedow

Richard, I hope your taper is going well too. I'm sorry the weather has taken a turn for the worst and our 80-degree days are over, though. Drink lots of fluids between now and the 21st. I think you're going to need them. Oh, and what are your thoughts on people having to register for 2012 before they've even run 2011? Doesn't seem right to me.

Sigh, and just when they seemed to me to finally be getting some real traction in season 2 to give them some solid direction in the series.

John - I think the early registration is just typical of any other Ironman where the current year's athletes get to register first, and that early registration just happens to be the day before the race. I am not sure if this is always the way it is as this is my first IM experience, but I do know I don't want to have to be doing lots of walking around the next day. I have not yet made a decision on registering for 2012 and may not do so until after the race even if it means taking my chances with online registration. At this point i just don't know if i will be ready to put myself through this process again that soon. It does indeed seem like it will be a ....ahem..... WARM day coming up, but that's what was expected. I am altering my diet plan this week to take in more fluids and eat the best I can over the last week. I have been doing a number of my longer runs in he afternoon and evening to be as acclimated as possible.

I just don't get this. Why do it if you aren't going to do the whole thing, charity or not???? Maybe this is why my teenager refuses to call running a sport. I worked my tail off for the KY derby half--it was the worst run I have ever had--and I wouldn't have wanted it if I hadn't done the whole thing.

Richard--I hope it's going ok for you. It is warm here, so I can only imagine what it is in Texas. We are going to hit 90 today, but back in the low 70s this weekend, so hopefully it will cool off a little bit for you, too.

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying Spring.:goodvibes

AFM--My almost 20 yo moved home on Friday for the summer. It started off very rough, but we have all settled into a little routine.

On Mother's Day I said all I wanted was for DS to get up and run with us (I was actually riding my bike--no running in May). So he did it. They ran 6.2 and I think he was very proud of himself--but ready to puke at the end.:thumbsup2 (He ran in hs and played soccer). He told me he would not have done it if it wasn't Mother's day. Anyhow, Mike and Tom are going to run a 10k in July and both seem pretty excited. DS is planning on running with us on the weekends. He said his plan is to GTL this summer.;) I think that needs to include a J in there too for job! But he's doing his own laundry and has cut the grass and cleaned up after himself, so, so far so good.

I had to walk my bike down the hills (which killed my knee) because my brakes were so LOUD it was embarrassing. It was this loud screeching noise! We were in this huge park where there are packs of people riding bikes together around the loops. And it was this really quiet Sunday morning and all you could hear were the brakes on my bike.:scared1: Anyhow, Mike adjusted the brakes and cleaned the wheels and I think we are good to go.

I was back at the chiro yesterday. He worked on my right leg, too cause it's been tweaking a little too. He told me he had two people who came in with itbs a month before the derby 1/2 and they were over it by the time the race started, and I am having a particularly stubborn case. Mike said--you always were special.:rotfl: Anyhow, I am now cleared to do anything except run. So that's cool. I am going to start going back to strength class. I did a yoga dvd yesterday at home--thanks Maria and John.:) OMG--I am so NOT flexible. And I've run in the pool a couple of times. Which is weird, but doable.

Ok, I'm sure this was way more than you all wanted to know.:goodvibes

Hope everyone is well!

Good for you! Don't worry about not being flexible. Most runners aren't, which is why yoga is so good for us. Running tightens the hamstrings, calves, hip flexors, and even the lower back at times, all of which make us less flexible. I can touch the floor from a standing pose, but can't even get to my ankles when I'm seated. My glutes and lower back won't let me bend that much.

Richard: Just wanted to cheer you on in the last few days leading up to the Ironman. You are so not a thread-killer we are all just busy enjoying spring.

So in the bad influence department: anyone considering doing Tinkerbell in Jan?

Originally I said no way would I travel to CA so close to WDW marathon weekend with plans to do Princess in FL just a few weeks after but now I am reconsidering. It happens to fall over the weekend of my 40th birthday and Butch offered it as a birthday getaway weekend for us. Kind of hard to resist but would be more fun with WISH friends. Anyone...

Sorry, Jen, but I've got no interest in running it. I'm not upset about them offering another female-centric event, the timing is just all wrong. Had they put it in the spring, I might have gone. As it is, they'll get plenty of cash out of me at WDW marathon weekend.
