Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Anyone else sign up for Marine Corps today?

I started having second thoughts, so I didn't. Then I looked this morning and panicked when I saw it was 85% full, so I did. :scared1: By the time I'd finished registering, it was 90% full. Ugh.

No MCM for me this year. Also no Hershey for me, though it sounds like quite a WISH party! It is the same weekend as Twin Cities...which I think is the way I am going to end up going.

Things have been busy here with the kids seemingly out of school more than they are in, Andrew's show, my extra work on Ring Round the Moon, my mom's visit, and another blizzard.

Yes, the glacier is back and bigger than ever, in spite of a rather significant visit from the snow fairy and a very significant thaw. You'd never know it now, though. When I back out of my driveway...I'm right next to the edge of the huge pile of snow.

We all went to see Ring Round the Moon in the middle of the blizzard, actually. Driving home from Minneapolis in a blasting snowstorm was pretty exciting. Fortunately, we did not get stuck or crash or anything. Until we got into the driveway - we didn't crash, but we only were able to make it partway to the garage before the snow was too much. That was OK, though!

And in the meanwhile, the Princess has crept up on me. I had a good 5 mile run outside last week before it started snowing again. My knees did have something to say about it the next day, but I am hoping that they are OK at this point for the half on Sunday. They mostly feel great, but it seems like after more than a few miles now, they are still complaining about that Hypothermic Half.

Well, if I can just get through the Princess, I'll have my Half Fanatics cred.

Jackie - I remember that thwarting last year! The vagaries of racing. I'm glad you got in on MCM before it was too late!

The Half-Marathon-that-was-actually-a-long-10-miler was actually my second serious thwarting. My first was last year when they cancelled one of the half marathons that were on consecutive days here. Flooding. What can you do? So the main goal here: Finish the Princess. Eyes on the prize.

Jen - I am so glad you took matters into your own hands and got some answers for Sarah. She's obviously a really smart girl (of course from a genetic perspective, it would be an astounding shock if she weren't) and hopefully the school will be able to provide better services for her unique needs. Hopefully we can chat a little more this weekend. Good job advocating for your girl!

John - Can't wait to hear more about your Hill race!

Richard - 100 miles on a bike! I'm sure you're fully capable, but what an accomplishment that will be! We want a picture of the beard!

Julie - I hear ya on school vacation week!

Rose - I saw this article the other day and...I'm sorry to say it made me think of you, but it kind of did and it seemed to have some comprehensive tips, so her ya go:

How to Avoid Runner's Trots

So I'll see some of you at the 4pm All Star Sports Food Court Meet on Saturday. And anyone who wants pre-race soft serve, I'm planning on the Dolphin ice cream place later that night. :thumbsup2 Though it could be an adventure getting there.

Safe travels and safe training to all and to all a good night!:cheer2:

Debra - I knew I missed someone!!! Did I promise a Valentine's Story? Well, this year my mom was visiting. And nothing says Valentine's Day like having your mom/ MIL as a houseguest, am I right? Plus also Andrew had rehearsal that night for his new show, "The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade." Commonly referred to as "Marat/Sade" for obvious reasons. So nothing says Valentine's Day like having your mom as a houseguest and your husband going out for the evening to rehears an avant-garde classic....

So on the 13th, I said to Andrew, "So, if you're still looking for something for Valentine's Day, I could really use a new chain for my Horcrux since the old one broke. I'd like it to be a little longer, maybe 18. They have them at Kohls, we have a coupon and try to get one that is sturdy, like a box chain"." True story. And on the morning of the 14th, he handed me a chain that is probably...30", I'm going to say, but sturdy and so we're just going with it.

Did I mention my Horcrux before? A gift from my FIL at Christmastime. It's my birthstone (November) and rather largish. A friend recently asked whose soul did it contain a shred of? I told them it was probably my FIL's, since he's the one that sent it, though there is no way to know for sure.

I really should post a picture, shouldn't I? Maybe another time. I seriously need to pack now!!!

And what did I give Andrew? A very small The Office valentine with Michael Scott on the front saying "Would you rather be feared or loved?"

And inside it says "Both! I want you to be afraid of how much you love me."

It's not that funny, and I did not even sign it, so he could re-send it if he wanted to. OK, that is a bit of a family joke that is probably not even worth explaining, but it's something my Stepmom does.

Back to the thought of how much packing I need to do if I want to be prepared for the weekend....

I would say you forgot me, too, but since we're having dinner tomorrow night...:woohoo:

Now back to that packing for you -- just a little more work for me and I'll be sprung! :thumbsup2

Maria :upsidedow

Maria! I didn't forget you - I sent you a PM first thing this morning! Sorry I left out a shout-out, but you're right, we will catch up this weekend. Now really, really back to packing....

Just teasin', honest!

I knew I had the PM waiting, and that helped me hurry up and do my 2M -- I told myself I couldn't read it until I ran! :rotfl:

Hope you can part the snow to find the airport! :lmao:

Maria :upsidedow

Good luck to everyone running! I am so ready to go! I'm so keyed up that I'm going to have to be careful not to go out too fast! I must say, I am feeling pretty fabulous since giving up gluten. Things are working the way they are supposed to:thumbsup2, except for a couple of days last week when I accidently ate gluten.

Safe travels to everyone on their way to the Princess.:goodvibes

Corinna--just read the article. Thanks so much for sharing. While I feel great, I have been second guessing the g-f decision, so it was so nice to see that other people are starting to see the connection. And I've even been doing the warm drink every morning! Too funny. Maybe I really have found the solution this time.:)

I am just popping in for a quick post to wish safe travels and good luck to my Princess half-bound cousins. I hope you all have great weather and a ton of fun!

I am just popping in for a quick post to wish safe travels and good luck to my Princess half-bound cousins. I hope you all have great weather and a ton of fun!

Half-bound cousins? That's no way to run a race. I hope you're all fully unbound by the time the race rolls around. :rotfl:

Glad I'm not the only one who read it that way. :confused3 :lmao:

For those of you travelling to the Princess, have a wonderful time!

Jackie

Glad I'm not the only one who read it that way. :confused3
Jackie

I must be tired when I leave myself open to THAT level of twisting of my words. :rolleyes1 I could edit the post, but that would be less fun than leaving it.........

Safe travels, cousins!

Made it home from Princessprincess: It was a great, whirlwind weekend.

I got todo a bunch at Universal with fiends. Still love MIB ride and Rp Ride Rockit was awesome. Liked Harry Potter too but felt it was a bit too crowded.

Spent great quality time with my couins Maria, Corrina, Rose and Mike at Jellyrolls last night. Thanks for the really fun night!

Kathy: thanks for the adviceon my DD. Ihope wok sttles down for you soon.

I did see the poiatrist today for a really painful plantar wart that has made running a bit tricky since Goofy. He did some combo of cutting and topical stuff, so hopefully it will feel better soon but right now I have a really unique looking limp/shuffle gait going on. Hopefully I can run again by the end of the week.

Hi Cousins!

I had a great time on the Princess Adventure Tour. It was quite a weekend, with finishing my 3rd complete half marathon in 51 days and therefore qualifying as Half Fanatic #851!!!

I had a great time running the half and got every picture I could. Except unfortunately Mickey and Minnie near the finish - I didn't dare stop for them, though I saw someone else got pictures with them and now I wish I would have tried it! 38 Disney photo stops, plus 3 with WISH Scream Teamers, so that was a lot of stopping and starting. My time reflected it accordingly, but that is OK!

I wanted to come out of the race uninjured, and well, unfortunately the distance did re-aggravate what seems likely to be beginning tendonitis in my left knee - acquired courtesy of the icy/snowy conditions of the Hypothermic Half, darn it. SO, I'm switching to XT/Tri mode for a while. No running this week, and no runs longer than a 5K the rest of the month. That's my own prescription. :) It's all feeling better already and does not hurt when I stand or walk now. I have read, though, that it is easy to start that -itis up again by returning to activity too soon or too aggressively, so I'm going to add in more bike classes and swimming instead. Which is a nice change, I believe.

I went to a group cycle (spin) class today and they had a funky new machine called a krankcycle?? It is like a bike for upper arms. I did the last 10 minutes of the class on one and wow - that's a different experience! I definitely have a HUGE amount of respect for the wheeler athletes in the first place, but this gave me an added appreciation.

In other news, it is cold here. -2 feels a lot worse after you've been in 80º weather over the weekend!

Hope all the cousins are having a good week. :goodvibes

Hi cousins! We got back last night around midnight. What a fabulous weekend! It's in the 50s here today, and I'm sorry the 50s stink after the 80s for the past 5 days! I had a pr by over 10 minutes--so I'm thrilled! The foot was not happy at all the past few days, but it is feeling much better today. I would like to run the Kentucky Derby 1/2 at the end of April, but I'm waiting to register at least a little bit longer. And we really had a good time at Jelly Rolls.:goodvibes

Jen--the g-f pretzels have arrived.:goodvibes And I must say they are pretty tasty.:goodvibes I'm going to take an empty bag and see if my kroger can order them.

Corinna- -2. Oh my. Here I am whining about the 50s! Hope you are able to keep the "itis" from going to crazy. I read an article in the NYTimes about treating tendonitis. I think it was in Sunday's edition.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Maria--hope you got home safe today.:goodvibes

Popping in to post before I take off for WDW Friday. It's a working vacation, so I may be back. And truth be told, I'll just happy if I can work by the resort pool and not even hit the parks. Just sun, run, a little fun...

Rose: Congrats on the Princess - your 10 minute PR - and on Mike coming along! I'm glad your food is feeling better and you're planning an April 1/2. How was the tummy? I hope a gluten-free diet helps with everything. I did see Corinna's pictures of one of your g-f desserts. Delicious looking!

JenB: Great race, Jen! It sounded as if you had a blast on the course, then at Universal. Ouch - I hope things get taking care of with the plantar wart. We're definitely in for Hershey, although we've made no plans. BUT...we wrote it on the calendar - the rest is just minor decision making. :lmao:

I'm sorry to read about DD's school issues. It certainly sounds, well, traumatic for her. And the less said about the teacher, the better. Well, something should be said to someone about the teacher - and to the teacher - but you get what I mean. Dyslexia can be so very frustrating for the whole family, and then to feel your daughter's been pigeon-holed and your concerns dismissed. I do believe that once you've got things going in motion, and a procedure in place, things will improve immeasurably. (Even if it has to be with another educator, one who deserves the name.) I don't have any solutions, just sympathy.

Richard: What I find so amazing about your IM is right there in your post. You're doing things you never thought capable of doing. You're meeting your challenges and exceeding your expectations. That's pretty darned exciting, if you ask me. And, if I may go so far, also pretty inspiring. Thanks, I need some of that.

John: As someone who often comes back from a run wheezing from the hills I was so sure I had planned to avoid - what's with this uphill both ways - you have my deepest sympathies for the Austin marathon. I can't imagine 26.2 miles of it. Without a really fun celebration afterwards at the very least. :lmao:

No MCM for me. It looks as if I'll be gone 3/4 weekends in Oct. at this point. I just couldn't do another.

Maria: I can't wait to hear about the fabulousness of your race. In the meantime, I hope your solo post-race trip was equally fab!

Julie: What, no fun stories from spring break? :yay: Something topless and involving alcohol perhaps? Oh, you mean your children's vacation week. Sorry, bad flashback. :rolleyes1

Jackie: So, wait. You're signed up for MCM marathon? Oh, you've got it bad.

Corinna: Love the Valentine's Day story. You have your own Horcrux. Only you! And I mean that in the best way. Speaking of best, you looked like you were having the best time at the Princess. I was stunned to read how many photo ops the race has...38 seems almost...excessive. But good for the memories and as a means to avoid injury. AND for qualifying as a half fanatic! I'm only sad that you're experiencing tendonitis. Your Tri-mode training, although self-diagnosed, seems like a reasonable response.

AFM: We leave Friday for a Fri-Fri trip. Spring break for DOOD, work for me. But it's Disney work, so it'll be okay. I'm just not in the right frame to go to WDW right now. Lots of things happening here that are distractions. Maybe more on that later. Anyway, I remember quite enjoying Epcot Flower & Garden Festival last year, so I'm hoping I'll be more in the mood once I get there. I'm looking forward to running in a t-shirt and shorts, though.

Okay, I will tell you one thing that's going on here which amused me. Monday night, firefighters/medics/police showed up at our apt. complex...again.

Our neighbor across the hall has called 911 before, when her boyfriend collapsed in the apt. They're both in NA. Well, Monday night another person went down, after exiting the bathroom. Yeah, you can see where this is going. The police show up, things get loud and contentious, and my cats are freaked out.

Our landlord has told my neighbors they have to leave, or he'll sue. I don't even see how that's legal. The women on the actual lease wasn't there, although her boyfriend was (not sure if he's on the lease); she was at work. (And to her credit, she hasn't collapsed or relapsed to my knowledge.) So that's been the excitement here.

And the strangest part - this neighbor isn't the most annoying one we have. We have someone who steals our newspaper, elderly people who have lived here 20+ years and who blare their TVs/get in your business, a single mom for whom the speaking volume is always set to 11, etc. I like my quiet neighbors who just like to chill out with friends and some less-than-legal substances.

So, yeah, I love the life of a city-dweller. Almost makes me feel like I live in a big city.

Congrats to all the Princess finishers! Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. Maybe I'll have to add that one to my list next year.

Not much news to report from the third coast in Houston. I think I'd rather be heading to WDW like Debra. RIght frame of mind or not, it still beats sitting in an office all day.

My race report from Austin is mostly done. I haven't added the sushi dinner with 9 of us the night before and the bar hopping afterwards, but if you care more about the race than the socializing, read away. ;)

Thanks to everyone for all of your support with my struggles with DD, you guys are the best :grouphug: Things are looking up in that department. We found a tutor that DD loves and actually looks forward to seeing :thumbsup2 The school is starting to listen to us, so hopefully all will be on the right track in a few more weeks.

My foot is doing much better today-- limp is nearly gone and I'm considering trying a short run cause I feel like I'm turning into a slug.

John: You'd fit right in at Princess! It definitely is a fun race. I know I'll be back next year-- gotta maintain my "perfectly princess"

Deb: Enjoy your trip two WDW. Hopefully you'll perk up once you are there, Disney has a way of doing that for me. Princess Weekend was just the pick me up I needed. I'm in for Hershey-- sounds like fun. How many more cousins can we get?? (you all know you want too...)

Rose: Glad you found the pretzels and that they are tasty popcorn::

Jackie: How is the hip? I hope things are still going well. I think I am going to skip MCM in favor of Wine and Dine and Hershey Half. Maybe next year...

Corinna: tri mode sounds like a good idea for your leg, I hope it feels better soon

Jen - Glad to hear things are turning around with DD. It's amazing how much we have to fight to make things happen for them. Good that you at least figured out what the problem is and are working on a solution. The hip is, in my mind, healed. I see the doctor in 12 days and hope he'll clear me to run at that time. The PT is going to discharge me on Monday, since they said there's really nothing more they can do for me. I can do everything at home that I'm doing there. I'd love to do Hershey, had even booked a room last year, but don't see how we can swing that this year. DH may do Steamtown, and then it looks like both of us may do MCM. He's trying to BQ, so a third October race just isn't in the cards.

John - I totally agree. WDW in any frame of mind beats work. And if they hadn't changed the Princess dates, we'd be on our way now... DD starts her spring break today, and we'd planned to spend her entire break at WDW. I met with a sales rep yesterday who just got back from a cruise on the Dream. His co-worker was very frustrated that she couldn't get a word in about what they were trying to sell; he and I kept steering the conversation back to the cruise. :rotfl:

Rose - I had to read the "g-f pretzels" several times. Kinda like Richard's "half-bound cousins." I thought they must be very, very bad. Then I got it. :rolleyes1 I'm a little slow these days.

Corinna - Welcome to the Half Fanatics! FINALLY!

Debra - I signed up. That doesn't mean I'm going to run it. I fully reserve the right to switch to the 10K. I really like the sound of that. 6.2. Doesn't that sound better than 26.2? But I booked my hotel room, so I'm going to DC that weekend one way or another. My running buddy won't let me out of it.

I'm supposed to be working... but it's Friday, and the boss is sick. What do you think the odds are that I'll get anything done today?

Jackie

Happy Friday, everyone!!:cool1:

Today is a rest day for me, which means I actually have time to check in on what is going on here...

Congratulations to the Princess finishers, I loved reading the reports and stories.

Corinna - I admire the dedication to getting all those photos, you were certainly maximizing value for the course on that day! Good luck with tri mode (and your knee recovery). FWIW, I originally started with the tri training as cross-training because of a knee injury and then things kind of kept going (or things got out of control, if you ask Darcy her opinion!). I have a few entry level tri training books that I was preparing to get rid of, I would be happy to send them to you if you have any interest in them.

Rose - I was with Jackie on trying to figure out the g-f pretzel thing, but they sound like they make a good option for you. I dropped wheat from my general diet for non-gluten reasons, but I do wonder if a gluten sensitivity was part of the reason I felt much better afterward.

Debra - Your 911 stories reminded me of the long-gone days of apartment living, certainly not the high points of the apartment lifestyle. I have been called many things before-some of them have even been pretty nice-but inspiring is high praise I am not sure I am worthy of. I am truly honored.

John - Great job on the marathon in Austin, I certainly understand why no trip to Austin is complete without a good food experience.

Jen - It is good to see that the school situation is turning around for you.

AFM- I periodically forget what I post where and who knows what...perhaps especially now with all the extra training keeping me feeling perpetually tired, so please pardon me if I am reposting anything. This weekend I am taking a bit of a training break to run the 203 mile Texas Independence Relay as part of a 12 member team. We will start Saturday morning and finish early Sunday afternoon. Given that I have been feeling run down this week, I think it is a good time to take a training break--and I think it somewhat ironic that I will run about 20 miles this weekend in 6 segments and call it a "break".:rotfl:

Debra--have fun at Disney!:goodvibes Those are some crazy neighbors you have!

Jackie--I hope things go great with the doctor!:goodvibes

John--I think you should definitely do Princess. Mike thinks he will do it again. He says he had a good time. There were definitely (at least on our part) lots of grown-up drinks consumed over the weekend.:goodvibes And, I must say, we really had fun at Jelly Rolls.

Jen--glad you are finding some things that work for your daughter. We had some school issues with Tom, and my only piece of advice is to keep pushing. (Politely of course). Eventually things worked out, but we really had to stay on top of things. Are you definitely doing W&D? We are going to discuss it this weekend, and maybe go ahead and book dvc. We were contemplating DL (it's on my birthday), but I don't know if I want to do it this year.

Richard--enjoy your "light" weekend.:goodvibes I am still amazed everyday with how much better I am feeling without gluten. I could go on and on. I read a statisitc that it's estimated that 10% of Americans have celiac disease and between 30 and 40% have gluten sensitivity. Crazy, right?

Maria--I hope you made it back ok.:goodvibes

I signed up for my next half. My foot is doing ok, so I'm going to run the KY Derby 1/2 at the end of April. This will be an emotional one for me, because it's the one that I always wanted to do since it's local, but always "failed at" (quit training). And Mike is running for time, so I am on my own.:scared1: Not that he carries me or anything;) but I do count on his encouragement when I'm struggling. I'm trying to not be nervous (it's still a long way off), but I will say, I am probably going to be more anxious about this one than I was for my first half in September.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.:goodvibes

Oh, and I know Corinna only had one picture (I think) from Jelly Rolls, but we had a bunch! I will try to put them on facebook this weekend.:goodvibes (We took almost no race pictures, but Mike took a ton of pictures of everyone dancing.)
