Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Oh, I am a mat stomper too!

And also, the other day during my treadmill run, I thought "I would do the Hypothermic Half just so I could run on some clean asphalt instead of this darned treadmill." No guarantees of weather, of course, and right now it is -11 out there. No wind, though, so that is a blessing. I am thinking I could do 6 half marathons in 6 months if I do this one. Or at least 3 in 3. If I got 6, I'd have to embrace the Uranus status, I guess.

Richard - I have to say, eating to keep up with Tri-training sounds a lot less fun (and more challenging) if you can't have gluten or sugar. :sad1: Also, I told a marathoning friend that if I did Goofy next year, I would have to ride Expedition Everest. He looked at me, his eyes bugged out and he said "DURING the race???" He was concerned that the tensing up on a roller coaster at that portion of the race would be...unfortunate. I told him I knew someone who had done it, and with great success! :)

Not being able to ride the coaster during the marathon was a huge disappointment for me this year. I got there too early and wasn't about to wait 20 minutes for it to open. Lesson learned for next year: move back a few corrals in order to start later. :)

Corinna - wow! I never would have guessed my EE "detour" would still be the topic of conversation over a year later. The diet is one of choice and my ability to stay on it is aided by the fact that I just feel so good on it (although I do find myself craving healthier carbs at times), not to mention the weight loss of about 12 lbs. in 6 weeks as a motivating factor. I imagine I will start reintroducing some of those foods back into my diet soon--if only to keep up my nutrition levels.

John - Who would have guessed EE was a perk of running a slower pace? :lmao:

Julie - An inspiration? I am humbled that you think so highly of me. Thank you.

AFM - It was a bit amusing earlier today hearing Amanda (DD 22) griping about not getting all of her money back on income taxes because she made "too much" money. ;)

Corinna - After the Princess race I'll have 5 races in 5 months...was thinking of trying for 6 in 6 but my new job is kind of causing a problem with that idea. When is your Hypothermic Half?

Julie - Sorry about all the snow delaying your training. Be careful if you decide to venture out in that knee deep snow!

John - I'm getting ready to read your blog next. I love to read race reports.

Mel - I'm actually glad that we haven't had anyone ask us to buy Girl Scout cookies this year. I love thin mints but have trouble just eating a few. Once I open a sleeve of them, I eat them all.

Richard - Great job with the weight loss and the healthier eating. I need to focus more on my eating habits.

I had a great first week of work. I'm very overwhelmed but I think it will be a wonderful job that I will enjoy.

I am doing the Princess at the end of Feb but have only put in miles one day since returning from WDW. This morning I worked out a training schedule to get me to Princess. My DD7 saw it and said, "You can't do this now that you're a teacher...you have to work, do laundry, do homework and sleep...you don't have time to run." She said exactly what I have been feeling. I really need to find the time to train. Hopefully this week will be better.
For my Goofy training I was fortunate to be working very part time. I don't know how others manage to fit it all in (family, kids schedules, work, exercise, sleep)

Don't worry...half training for Princess while working is doable. Training for the full while working full-time was hard. One of the reasons I do my short runs on Mon and Wed is because those were the days DD18 had soccer practice. I just got her to her team's field, waited til the coach showed up, then did my run from the field. DD7 took gymnastics at the Y, which was really easy to get my workouts in. Now we're looking at tae kwon do for her (oddly enough on Mon and Wed) where I can drop her off for class then run from there. There's also the getting up way early thing, but not sure if Mike's schedule may not work for you with that. Having a TM at home is also hugely helpful!

I think 6 in 6 would get you to Jupiter!

Kathy: Congrats on the new job. Finding the time is really tough. I've found that the TM is my best friend because I can run after DD is in bed and use it as my tv viewing time and to unwind from the day. Doesn't always work but I get in most of my scheduled runs.

We just signed up for the National Half in DC this spring. Heavily debated doing the full but decided that the training commitment would be a bit much at this point.

I survived my dental implant with no real problem. Took my mandatory 48 hours off of running and will see how my jaw feels about it tonight with 4-5 miles.

Mel - I dreamed about Girl Scout cookies last night. I can't imagine why... :sad2:

Jen - Congratulations on a successful dental visit! Glad this one wasn't a repeat of the last one. Take it easy on the running!

Kathy - Wonder what DD7 would say if you told her you were going to eliminate the homework and laundry instead? Funny how they automatically assume our needs are the ones that get pushed aside... I'm really glad that I discovered running when DD was already old enough to be self-sufficient. It was still difficult enough - I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have tried, or continued, had she been any younger. I have enormous admiration for all of you with young children.

8 days till I see the doctor, but I'm more optimistic than ever after talking to the PT last night. He wants to cut back on my visits there - thinks I'm doing too well to benefit from continuing. Didn't see that one coming - figured they'd find a way to keep me coming and keep the money even when I thought I was fine. We're doing a re-evaluation tomorrow night. I don't imagine he'll clear me to run a marathon the next day, but maybe he'll let up a little on his idea that I shouldn't run at all this year. I've driven him crazy on the TM, so I think he's throwing in the towel rather than argue with me.

Those of you considering MCM, mark your calendars for Feb 23!

Jackie

Man, I swore I posted something...

Mel: Girl Scout cookies? I'm in for some pre-orders. I'll send you a message on FB. You're definitely a perfect princess. Not Disney just needs to make a film with one who wears leopard print shorts. Maybe a tutu. At least wear one for your 50th by 50 race. (You're too cool!)

Jackie: MCM. DOOD has mentioned wanting to do it again, but I'm not sure it fits with our work schedules this year. 2011 is the year of travel. I will mark my calendar for Feb. 23, though, and see what he says. (Look at how I just invite myself along.) I'm so happy to hear you're moving again because I know it makes you happy. So is DH, I'm sure.

Delaney: Back to back marathons! I'm impressed by that, and by the fact someone just offered you up her bib like that. Very generous. I hadn't noticed the date/time stuff being out of whack. I try to avoid pictures of me whenever possible. You don't seem like the same kind of shy wallflower, though. :rotfl2:

Kathy: I know what you mean about the challenge in balancing FT work, training and other life obligations. The half is definitely a happ(ier) distance for such things. That's why DOOD and I do Goofy every other year. And I don't have kids! Speaking of kids, I'm so glad you're enjoying your new job! :cool1:

Rose: :thumbsup2 for working on getting the electrolytes/salt intake balanced on LRs and LR days. I tend to get really salty-sweaty too. My cats love it. Me, I find myself eating pretzels as part of my post-LR meal.

No, I'm not doing the Princess. And I won't be there this year to scream team. *Sigh* They changed the date of the race & it doesn't match our spring break. Not that I didn't make an argument for me traveling without DOOD the week before our spring-break trip to WDW. :rolleyes1

JenB: I'm glad to hear your dental implant went well, or as well as could be hoped for. How was your recovery 5 miler!?I don't know much about the National Half or Marathon. Intense?

Richard: Be careful with your calorie consumption. One, I'd had to see you waste away to practically nothing; you just don't have the tentacles to pull that off. Two, I just want your training to go smoothly. Me, I'll be having the opposite problem thank you. 20 pounds to go, which is 10 more than last year. :rolleyes1

Julie: I find it hard to get into a running schedule during the winter. And knowing how hard you've been hit...Wow. Do you use the TM at all? I can't remember, but don't think so.

Corinna: How is "Art" coming along? You know they rely on you because you're dependable AND talented, right? Did your former priest get certified; I'm certainly impressed with her, video unseen! And are you doing the Hypothermic Half?

AFM: This is a cross-post from Leanies....Sorry!

Okay, lots of things. First, I lost 3 pounds last week and am weighing in on Fridays. I'm going for slow and steady, with no pressure on myself to cut out bunches of thing. I'll be happy to lose 20-25 pounds total over the course of a year. That should be very do-able. Then again, I said that last year. :rotfl2:

Still doing the 100 days challenge. Ran 8 miles this weekend on the TM. Not an ice run/walk/shuffle/stumble fan. :lmao:

DOOD & I sat down to plan our 2011 travel for the year - maybe a first for us. Lots of trips planned, including ones to WDW and DLR. The bad news is, that means no month-long trip to WDW for me in 2011. DOOD was a little upset when I told him I hadn't envisioned him coming with me, at least not for the entire time. But he wants to, and that complicates everything. Not the least of which is cat care.

Anyway, so the month-long trip is off the table this year. But that's okay. I'll be at WDW for the 40th anniversary and DLR for D23 Expo. We're also headed to Seattle (first time) and Stratford. And family trips. And races.

As for races, we discussed it as training for stuff is such a crunch. His job is no longer stable hour-wise. More on that later. But he's in for Goofy 2012, so that means I'm in for Goofy 2012. What's good for the gander...

And we'll try to work something out for either the RnR Philly Half or the Hershey Half in the fall, among possible others. Right now, he can run a half without training, and I'm going to keep my LRs at a 6-8-10 rotation while I focus on weight loss. Then, if a local half comes up we can jump in if the schedule permits. Meanwhile, I hope to get stronger/faster/happier or any mix of the three.

As the mom of a college student, I say stick with it! My DS (who I adore) is 19 and finally realizing that I have a life away from him--and that I'm actually smart and can do things other than his laundry. (Though he does still bring his laundry when he comes home, and I do it. What does that say about me I wonder?:rolleyes1) And it's my fault for NEVER putting myself ahead of him. He's a great kid, but I would do it different if I had another one. Hang in there.

Jen--woohoo for surviving the implant!:goodvibes

Jackie--Fingers crossed for good news when you see the doctor!

AFM, I'm off to the doctor tomorrow. No nausea anymore but the other stuff has gotten worse. I am going to beg and plead for any kind of option that does not involve a colonoscopy! Mostly because of the not eating (or liquid only). Since I have lost weight if I go more than 3 or 4 hours max without eating I feel horrid.

We are scheduled to run 13 Saturday and it's supposed to be in the 40s, so we might be able to go outside! Very exciting!

Hope everyone is doing well and staying warm!:goodvibes

Deb: :cool1: on Goofy in 2012 but sad you won't be at Princess this year. Philly RnR half is a really nice race-- we are already signed up. I am seriously considering doing the Hershey one too as it does not conflict with Wine and Dine this year. Keep me posted on what you decide and good luck hammering out travel plans for 2011. We are trying to figure out our vacation and racing schedule and having a tough time.

Kathy: How is the new job working out? Hopefully everyone is getting into the new routine without too much problem.

Rose: I hope your stomach issues resolve themselves quickly for you.

Richard: You are not allowed to waste away on us. I understand it is a real problem, but would love to get rid of my extra 20lbs and at the moment can't fathom having to worry about not eating enough.

Jackie: Keeping my fingers crossed for you for good news from the doctor. I like the philosophy of badgering the doc into giving advice you want:lmao:

Things are pretty good here. The post implant run went well and I feel nearly 100%. I am also trying a few miles here and there wearing Vibram 5 Finger shoes and kind of liking them. Not sure if I'm a total convert but the concept intrigues me.

We are trying to figure out our race schedule for 2011. The Broad Street Run which is a local 10 miler surprised us by reaching capacity in only 2 weeks, so we need to rethink our plans. Anyone interested in an inaugural half in Williamsburg, VA in May? This might replace Broad Street for us.

I think I have more than enough extra weight that I am far from wasting away, but I appreciate all the concern. Although it is nice for just once (and I do mean only once) that I can eat all that I want....at least all the healthy-ish food that I want--provided I keep up with these heavy training weeks. ;)

Delaney - I'll be watching for you at Houston, providing the weather is decent for spectating. Yes, I will be a fair weather fan this weekend.

Rose & Jackie - Good luck with your respective doctor's visits!

Debra - I am 4 weeks into my training program and all is smooth at this point, of course I am coming off of a recovery week and have 3 building weeks ahead of me, so we will see what my opinion is a few weeks. :scared1: I love your training schedule! DW does not travel well at times, so we don't get that much done beyond WDW. However, she is dropping hints at wanting to get in a Disney trip soon!

I'd try to type more but am feeling too tired for now, so I'll be heading off for this Friday night and thinking of tomorrow's bike ride...

I sure hope you're able to be a fair weather fan. The forecast still isn't looking good now (80% chance of rain at the start), but it's getting better.

Jen - I might be up for a race in Williamsburg. Since we used to live in Virginia, we've been talking about making a trip back to see our friends and visit our favorite restaurants and bars. Squeezing in a run might make all the eating okay. And how do you like your Vibrams? I'm torn between those and a pair of Newtons.

Debra - Glad you're in for Goofy next year! We'll have to hang out for more than one picture this time. :lmao:

Kathy - How's the new job?

Jackie & Rose - Hope the doctors give you good news!

I hope everyone else is doing well and not completely tired of snow. I'm off to bed in a few minutes to rest up before the race on Sunday.

Hello cousins......sneaking back in.....AGAIN! Forgive me, I haven't read any posts (other than the previous few pages) since before the holidays, but I have been kept somewhat current via Facebook since many of you are my "friends". Congrats to all those who ran the half or full.....or both....at WDW earlier this month. I loved viewing all the photos, but it definitely made me feel sad that I was not there to participate and/or cheer you along. It was the first time in 5 years that we weren't there, so it was a very strange feeling.

I am hoping to get back into the swing of things again. As of this time, I don't have any events that I am registered for, but there are several I am interested in: Dearborn MI Martian Half, Richmond Half......any cousins signed up for those? I am sorry that I missed the cut-off for the Tobacco Trail half...again! I also missed it last year, but at least I got to cheer on some WISHers. Hope to do the same this year.

A special big shout out to MARIA for her amazing time running the half!

Question for RICHARD: are you training for an Ironman?

That's it for now.....typing this on my new iPad and it's a whole new experience for me. Stay warm, everyone!

Even not running I still went to the Houston marathon expo just for the fun of it. I could not beat the Running Warehouse (.com) prices with WISH discount ( btw the 15% team discount also included Polar heart rate monitors!), but I did pick up 4 boxes of my Hammer gels for $1 each, and I stopped at the Disney and MCM booths to look (i.e. drool) over the medals. I am really planning a 2012 MCM trip to get that one done.
I am also planning on the new hometown marathon in March 2012, so I was thinking of taking it easy next January, but with so many of you doing Goofy I may have to join you.

Question for RICHARD: are you training for an Ironman?

::yes::

I had been tentatively planning for a late 2011/2012 Ironman race in my schedule. When they announced the inaugural Ironman Texas race on May 21, 2011, it was something I could not pass up. The upside of this race will be the lack of travel costs as the start line is about 2.5 miles from my house.

Jeanne - iPad typing does take some getting used to! I agree that is was strange NOT being at WDW this year (and I haven't even gone as much as you have).

That is so cool!:goodvibes

John--Have a fabulous race tomorrow!!:goodvibes

Mike and I ran 14.09 today. (The .09 because we wanted to stop at our car.) It went pretty well. We did lots of hills, which was fun--did I just say hills were fun? But we could both tell that we've been running alot on the treadmill, because our legs were very fatigued. The temp was 50--considering it snowed two or three days this week, we were absolutely thrilled! It was so nice to be outside.

So, I went to the doctor on Wednesday. I wrote down everything that has been going on so I wouldn't forget anything. I was really hoping she would tell me I was a hypochondriac, but no such luck. She said a couple of things concerned her. So they took a ton of blood and she's checking me for a bunch of stuff including celiac disease and overactive thryroid. I'm having troubles even on some short runs now, so I'm glad I went.

I have researched celiac disease and interestingly enough one of the issues is malabsorption and electrolyte imbalance. It's possible the blood work will all come back normal and then I am off to see a gi guy and quite possibly an endocrinologist. I was a little overwhlemed for a couple of days. She also brought up exercise induced ischemia. I just don't want to be told I can't run. I can handle the other stuff. But I can't go back to not exercising. Even as cruddy as I feel at times, I feel so much healthier than I did a year ago. Hopefully, I will have a better idea next week as to what direction things are headed.

Thanks for the concern.:goodvibes Hope everyone is doing well!

Rose: It does sound like a good thing you went to the doctor, hopefully they find something easily fixable and your running will be better than ever. The idea of running outside is very dubious around here. Our streets are still very icy and slushy and I know I'd be the one to fall, so the TM and I are hanging out a lot.

Jeanne: We missed you this year at Marathon weekend but totally understand how crazy your schedule has been. Hopefully we can catch up with each other at a race soon. I agree typing on an ipad it a bit tricky, but I do love my ipad.

John: Have a great race tomorrow. I do like my Vibrams, but am really just starting to run in them. I'm up to 2-3 mile runs in them and have not had any problems so far. I do find my stride is different with them and my feet feel really light which is kind of nice.

Way to go, Richard!!!!! That is awesome that the race is so close to home. My daughter is currently training for the Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) Ironman at the end of June. A somewhat ambitious endeavor since she has never even done a half ironman before. That said, she is a sub-4hr. marathoner and was a distance swimmer through college, so she has already masterred 2 out of the 3 skills. Biking is a whole 'nuther can of worms for her though. Again, I can't stress how lucky you are to have your race so close. It's going to cost a small fortune just to ship the bike cross country in addition to lodging, flights and a $650 entry fee. :scared1: And of course we will be there, along with her husband, the Greek! We wouldn't miss that for anything. If you have any tips you'd like to share, I'll be happy to pass them along to her.

Rose: take care of yourself....hope you get some answers and viable solutions to your health issues.

Congratulations to your daughter for taking on the Ironman race in Coeur d'Alene. I have heard very good things about that race. She will be at a disadvantage not having done the 70.3 distance before, but I expect her athleticism and her youth will get her through. I do know how lucky I am as I was looking into having to talk the DW into a trip for Ironman Wisconsin (her family is from the Milwaukee area) as a cover for the extra costs. I am posting my training details on my blog at www.intotransition.blogspot.com, and she is welcome to read my story there (ok, everyone is welcome who can stand to read through it! :rotfl:). As far as tips go, I am just trying to finish the event and live to tell the tale ;), but my best tip would be to make sure she has a good training plan and a friend or training group for support (two things I expect she already has taken care of by now).
When the time comes send me her name and I will track her online and root for her from home.

Jen - Have a great birthday!

Jen - Happy birthday! :dance3:

John/Delaney - Well? Race report?

Jeanne - Hey neighbor!

Just when I was packing my bags for Ireland...:shamrock:, DD has to go and make things difficult. She really can't afford to do more than one semester away from school, and her major is hospitality management with a concentration in either hotels or events (still TBD). Her goal is to work at a WDW hotel. All along she's planned to do the Disney College program, and it suddenly occurred to her that she needs to do that spring 2012 - same semester she was planning to go to Ireland. So now we're in limbo while she decides whether to do the "cool" trip, or the one that will be more beneficial to her career-wise. Obviously, we'd love to go visit her in Ireland, but if she goes to WDW for 5 or 6 months, we could make several trips to see her there... and put the 2012 races back on the calendar as well... I'm trying to stay quiet and let her make the decision. :ssst:

Jackie
