Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Hello cousins!

Richard - I'm so impressed with your racing calendar. You always seem to have a race to train for. I'm not organized enough to plan out (or train for) multiple races. :confused3 I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has been sick, but I'm glad to hear that she's getting better. Sending pixie dust your way that her recovery is speedy. pixiedust:

Richard's post is a tough one to follow, as I have very little to report. My official marathon training started today. Unfortunately, I seem to be dealing with plantar fasciitis. It's fine once I start running, but very painful once I've been sitting for a while or when I get up in the morning. I found some exercises to try, but if anyone has any other advice, I'd love to hear it.

Happy Labor Day!

Julie - I keep a golf ball and a lacrosse ball under my desk and work and try to roll my foot on them as much as possible. The PT suggested the lacrosse ball (actually, he recommended a frozen lacrosse ball, but I can't tell much difference.) Use a frozen water bottle after every run, and as often as you can at other times (I'm not very good with the other times...) I've also found that calf raises on the stairs seem to be really good at helping to stretch it, and no one ever seems to list that exercise for PF. I do them with my foot straight, and then I angle it both to the inside and outside and do them that way as well. Good luck - mostly it's a matter of time!

Richard - I've been thinking about you and John. Hoping you're not in the path of the wildfires. I saw John's FB post about being able to smell the smoke, but I know we've been able to smell smoke from fires here that were hundreds of miles away. Hope Patricia is feeling better soon! And like Julie, I'm in awe of your racing schedule. :worship:

My calendar is very slim at the moment. I'm doing a half in mid-October as a training run for MCM, then MCM at the end of October. Then there's nothing else on the calendar officially. We're waiting for Annie to apply for the Disney College program for the spring semester, and once those dates are firm, will decide which, if any, races get added. I'm thinking Princess, simply because I've never done it. I thought I wanted the Chip/Dale medal, but then I saw it, and wasn't really impressed. If she's already at WDW by then, we may go and maybe I'll do it, but I'm not going to stress about it. A couple of my Galloway buddies are doing Princess, so it could be a fun race. Other than that, there are so many local (or in-state) half marathons to choose from that I could do one almost every weekend. It's going to be really rough to decide. And please, please, everyone - remind me later - NO FULLS next year!

Jackie

Yay MCM! I can't wait to run this race! I never ran it while I lived in Virginia, go figure. :) Where are you staying? My hotel is about 2 blocks from the finish, which I think will come in handy after that uphill section for the last half mile or so.

And hi to all the other cousins too! I hope you're all doing well and enjoying life these days. I'm really happy because we finally got a break in the weather. Yes, instead of being 100+ during the day, it was only 94 today. Time to break out the parkas. :lmao:

Jackie - Thanks for the advice. I will definitely try all of your suggestions. :thumbsup2

John - Don't forget hats, mittens, and scarves to go with your parka - you must be freezing at a mere 94 degrees.

John - We're at the Hyatt Key Bridge. Should be only a couple of blocks from the finish as well. We stayed in Crystal City last year, and the wait for the shuttle, combined with a bad race, was enough to make me willing to pay any amount to be at the finish line this year!

We've had a break in the weather too. After weeks and weeks of evening runs in the 90's, I've had two weeks in a row of 80's! We just keep holding our breath that it sticks around.

Jackie

John - I'm not wearing any parks this year--I've been waiting since May to wear my Ironman jacket!

Jackie - Thanks for thinking of us. We are half a county away from the fires, but should be relatively safe, other than seeing and smelling a lot of smoke. There are also a lot of smaller fires going around that, thankfully, the fire departments are keeping from becoming bigger fires.

Julie - I wouldn't call 94 degrees freezing, but it sure does feel a lot less hot than what we had before. ;)

Finally, I'm close to possibly getting an end of season deal on a good (well, much better than good!!) triathlon bike that I have been saving for. It's not a done deal, so please no discussion off this board just yet, but I will give my cousins here a special sneak peak at the bike. I had planned to wait until next year to buy this bike, but have a chance to get it for a good deal off the regular sales that makes it just where I can pay out of my savings for it. :yay:

The only thing I don't like about this photo is that it is tough to pick out most of the red accents in the frame design, but it is close enough to get the idea.

Have a good day, everyone!

Hope you don't mind me saying SWEET bike and good luck!

I am hoping to have shoulder worked on after I get back home to Fl. from El Paso next month so I can start preparing for the 70.3 at WDW in May. Have you ever competed in it? First though is Space Coast 1/2 Marathon in November then my second Goofy in January unless DW and I decide to do the 5K on Friday again.

I have not done the 70.3 at WDW, although I have friends who say good things about it.

Also, has anyone seen the Torchwood:Miracle Day miniseries that just wrapped up?

Hello cousins!

How is everyone's training going? I'd love to hear what everyone is up to.

I'm in my second week of official training for the Mickey. This morning, I went out for a run a little bit before 5:00 and came face to face with a coyote! Luckily, he turned and ran, but boy was I scared! :scared1: Gotta love city living!

Maria, if you're out in the mornings, be careful, We seem to have lots of coyotes here - do you have any in your neighborhood?

Hello cousins!

Aside from the searing heat and humidity, my training is coming along just fine. ;) Actually, training in Houston's miserable conditions this summer has improved my speed when I run elsewhere. I ran the 10k portion of a tri relay last weekend and managed to come in sub-53 minutes, pretty good for me considering I had a 6.5-mile warm-up run beforehand.

My MCM training is getting to its peak period. I'm counting down the weeks to the race by the mileage of my long runs. I've got 18, 20, 16, 22, 16, and 13 to go. :)

We hear them, but I haven't seen one yet. I'll be starting my Princess training in October. I'm thinking about doing the Disney Galloway long distances, but not sure if I'm really up for it. I have never run more than a Half, and he has you going up to 19...I have to think if I do that, the Half will feel like a breeze, but wow, that would be some really long runs in Jan. and Feb....

How is your dd enjoying her new school? I know you are all very happy and excited!

Maria :upsidedow

Julie - Coyotes - I know we have them around here, but apparently not anywhere that I run, thankfully! Or maybe it's just that we're making so much noise that they're terrified. Between my Galloway group on Saturday, and the smaller group that's running together twice a week, I've been lucky enough not to run alone all summer.

John - We're scheduled for 23 this weekend, then 8, 8, 26, 8, and 10. The weekend after the 26 I'm registered for a half, so I'll actually do 13. And as I said above, I'm not going to do 23 this weekend due to family obligations - more like 15-16. So mine will probably be more like 16, 8, 8, 23, 13, 8. And then race day! It's getting very, very real now. One of the girls I'm going with started making dinner reservations this weekend. We decided we'd make them several places and then cancel what we don't want.

After months of upper 80's and 90's, Friday's high is supposed to be 63. Don't know how that happens, but I'm not complaining. I'm scheduled for 23 miles on Saturday, but will be cutting it short. Any miles, though, will feel wonderful in 50 degree weather!

Jackie

John - Glad to hear you're training is going well. I can't even imagine training in the heat you've had.

Maria - I'm happy to hear that you haven't encountered any coyotes. I can't even explain how scared I was this morning. It was just so unexpected. I think you're right - if you decide to do those long runs, the half will seem so easy! How is your DS liking 8th grade? It must be nice for him not to be a "sixie" anymore. Erin is LOVING school. I'm really happy for her and I'm glad that we made the right choice. The only down side is that I feel like I spend my whole day in the car, dropping off and picking up three kids with different start and end times to their days.

It's nice to see everyone getting back into training mode.

Richard: I hope your DD continues to feel better. Glad to hear you are safe from the fires. Oh yeah, that is one nice looking bike!

John and Jackie: the MCM training sounds like it is coming along well, I want to do that race someday..

Things have been the usual crazy around here. My office switched to electronic records and has been in complete chaos since. I'm working crazy hours and getting very little done. Now that school is back in session I have a little more time and a more predictable schedule, so hopefully I can keep up with the boards a bit better. (Oddly now that we are computerized I have trouble getting to a usable computer at work-- on a new network that is really restrictive).

We are training for the Philadelphia Marathon in Nov and are following a plan from Runner's World that calls for 3 20 milers. I did the first one this past weekend and fared relatively well. I want to build a bit more speed but was pretty happy with the way I felt. This weekend we are running the Philia Rock and Roll Half (in place of the 16 mile training run we are "supposed" to do). We also plan on doing Wine and Dine. I have also started biking as cross training and just for fun. I bought a new hybrid bike this summer and have been loving it.

Good luck to everyone this fall and I hope to see everyone around here a bit more.

Jackie - It must be nice to have people to run with. I've been doing all of my runs alone, which is pretty boring. Well, boring except for when I encounter coyotes. Good luck with your training!

Just got home from the Philly Rock and Roll Half. It was an awesome day :cool1: I have always liked this course because it is nice and flat. The weather was absolutely perfect for running with temps in the 50's at the start. I managed to PR with a 2:12:06. My prior best was a 2:18 in Providence about a month ago. I'm so psyched!!! Just had to share and try to convince everyone to come to Philia to do this awesome race.

This is also the closest I've ever come to negative splits: 1st 5K 31:21, 2nd 5K 31:14, final 5K 30:23
not very negative, but consistent :)

Popping back in because I need to get back on track with my training....

CONGRATS, JEN!!!!!
That's awesome about your PR!

Jen - CONGRATULATIONS! :woohoo: That's a terrific time! And negative splits are still negative splits. I'll add this one to the "maybe" list for next year. The November one has been on the list for a long time.

Julie - I must admit, it's been really nice this season to have companions for all my runs. I'm a little spoiled now and have almost forgotten how to run alone! And I'm used to running into the occasional deer, but a coyote would completely freak me out.

Saturday's run turned out to be longer than I'd planned. My brother canceled on us, so I decided not to quit as early as I'd originally planned to. We started at 5:00, and ended up doing 18 miles in the rain. Temps were in the mid 50's, so it was a drastic change. But we had a great run, and felt like running more. Only called it quits so I could visit with my sister!

Have a corporate audit this week at work, so I expect long hours and stressful days ahead. :sad2: Time to go get ready for the week.

Jackie

Jackie: I hope your week is not too stressful. Your 18 miler sounds great, nice work! The Philia race in Nov is also nice but a bit more hilly, not horrible, but definitely more hills than this course.

Jeanne: What is next on your race agenda. Is your family going to team up again for Wine and Dine?
