Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

I'm looking forward to the Trek movie-- just need a sitter...

We are greatfully on vacation in FL-- a little hot but sunny and wonderful. We spent a really nice day at the beach yesterday and saw tons of fish in the water with us and found a bunch of great shells-- it doesn't get better than that :cloud9: Today we will leave the in-laws house and head to WDW :yay:

Happy Mother's Day to all of my cousins. I have gotten tons of hugs from DD5 today-- awesome :thumbsup2

The movie totally exceeded expectations. I'm actually kinda emotional over it. I guess I grew up with these 'people' from my mom watching the original in reruns. It's nice to see some of the back stories on the characters. Loved Scotty and McCoy! I was concerned with Sylar as Spock but it worked. And Kirk was Kirk without the campy overacting and freaky 60's moodlighting.

We found Wrath of Khan and Generations on free PPV tonight!

Richard...have you seen the BK commercial with the 'Kingons' that beam in and steal the guy's ST glasses? I think about you every time he talks to his dog (Tiberius).

Jackie...so sorry to hear of your daughter's friend's experience. Hard to even imagine being that young without your parents.

I kind of saw it once, but I hardly pay attention to commercials. Now I will watch for it.

I am totally blown away by the new Star Trek movie. Expectations exceeded, future movies eagerly anticipated, just flat out delighted. It was a little hard as I was watching to wrap my mind around, but I think it's worth going outside the box because of all the possibilities unlocked.

Good Morning, Team Ohana!

Other than my food plan falling apart yesterday, it was a great day! I hope everyone enjoyed celebrating or being celebrated. :goodvibes

Still a bit in awe of the Star Trek movie, but Dennis keeps asking me if I realize it isn't real, so I guess I have to stop dwelling on it ;)

I'm not sure if Debra will make it to post a mixer question since she has computer issues. If not, we could just all drop in and share our favorite scene from the Star Trek movie...oh, wait, I said I was letting that go :rolleyes1 Plus, I'm sure not everyone who wants to has seen it yet. So no spoilers!

In the absence of a question, I'm just going to post three songs that make me move (this week, it varies!):

1) Please Don't Stop the Music -- Rihanna
2) Gotta Be Somebody -- Nickelback
3) Dreams -- Van Halen

Always looking for new (or not so new!) music for the workout playlist!

Not real?
:confused3
Ummm....never mind.

Yea, poor Dennis is burdened with practicality and a startling grip on reality. I'm much more taken to flights of fancy and imagination. He doesn't know what he's missing, but that's good because it would be heartbreaking to think of all the possibilities he's never entertained. We actually balance each other well. :lovestruc

I get it now. He just thinks that because it takes place in the future that it can't have happened yet. Typical linear thinking of a non-sci-fi fan.;)

Jackie: I'm so, so sorry to hear belatedly about your loss of your DD's friends mother. I know your entire family will do everything in your power to let the children know you care. I'm thinking of you all.

Okay, cousins, I'm back! Let the eerily silent thread because raucously noisy again! My computer is home, so I'm no longer at the mercy of public computers or begging to share DOOD's. The DIS is still slow, but no slower than usual. And my other applications are no longer hanging up. Whew! And that means I can quit hanging out on Facebook so much and bother you all! :woohoo:

To catch up: Happy Mother's Day to everyone who is or loves a mother! :goodvibes

First up: Numbers, numbers, numbers. I need your April numbers! You know who you are.

Second: If you did any races this weekend, I'm sorry I missed it. Congrats, Richard on your last-minute 5k!

Third: Let's talk Star Trek! DOOD and I liked it, give it a thumbs up, would recommend it as a fun flick, but weren't in love with it. I don't think it was enough of a reboot to the series. DOOD was troubled by some of the science. And let's not talk about plot. It's good enough to start a new series, and we're happy to see it, but not going on my top 10 for 2009 list. Feel free to argue with me--I encourage it! :yay:

JenB: I loved your review of Broad Street. It makes me think I should make a weekend trip of it next year, to see the sights and do a run. I'm getting quite used to rain, living in Pgh, so if I'm going to do a race during this time of year it might as well be Broad Street! Congrats on the new phones, and hope you send us some FL pictures with them!

Kathy: We're both doing Goofy, so we'll be training together, sort of. Are you doing Baltimore? DOOD's decided that's his fall marathon and I'm thinking about doing the 1/2.

Maria: I'm so jealous of your Universal trip. I just want to stow away in your luggage. Going on vacation sooner is never a bad thing, I think! And I need lots of anecdotes about going to see ST with the family. Was it traumatic for anyone involved? Add me to the list of people who ask, "Wait. ST isn't real?" :confused3 :rotfl2: Last, I picked up the Beck Diet solution at the library yesterday and will probably start it tonight. You're such a good influence on me.

Ronda: I love the advice!

Julie: Disney stories and pics, please! How did DD do with her arm? And your training...hmmmm?

Mel: That's so cool that you have an emotional attachment, with family memories, of the original Trek. My mom loved them too. That and the Planet of the Apes movies.

As for me: Let's see....erratic eating and working out led to an icky RftC race. I did the non-timed event like last year, as it's too crowded to run for time, but it was between 35-40 minutes. No dieting last week as DOOD is home full-time these days and it's playing havoc with my schedule. Thank goodness he leaves for D.C. for the month of June. :lmao:

I've got lots of other stories to tell, too, but they'll have to wait until I catch up with other threads. I missed you all!

Welcome back, Debra!

Down here, Star Trek reruns were on in the morning and conflicted with Sesame Street. I used to get mad when my mom wanted to watch ST instead of Snuffleupagus and the gang ;) I went into the movie not really knowing what to expect. The original ST has become kinda campy and, with Shatner's acting and new technological advances, almost goofy. TNG was really my series, but...
I just loved this movie. I can't believe that a show that barely managed 3 years on TV has evolved into a 40+ year phenomenon. I'm with Maria...what do you mean it's not real? If it's not real, it darn well should be. I saw an interview where Nichelle Nichols said she and Roddenberry had discussed ST as an intentional morality play. Gene Roddenberry's vision just really resonated with me, right down to societal, political and theological theories. DD16 is considering a topic for her research project next year on cultural anthropology using ST...possibly on technology we have that's potentially developed from the series (flip phone, PDA, Kindle, etc).

Anyway, I could go on and on and on and on...

oh yeah, 2 miles running tonight ;) Starting swim class in 2 weeks to get ready to take on the tri world

Debra - There were some elements of the storyline that less than pleased me (I'll not include specifics in case anyone intends to see it later and reads my post.), but I thought it was a very good way to restart the franchise--and if the film's attendance holds up, there will certainly be more to follow. It seemed to me that the script was an attempt to be generally loyal to the original Trek series, to explain the basic story to new viewers who might become fans, to be a platform for moving forward and to be an action/adventure film. I think they scored well on all these items and built the foundation for future success, whether they cash in on that foundation will remain to be seen.

Just popping in here to say....

Does anyone here watch Fringe? OMG!!!! I've died and gone to sci-fi heaven!

Aloha Team Ohana!

After a shaky start, my week is back on track. I ended up walking on the TM last night for my 4 mi, and then I ran 4 mi this morning. I also had yoga yesterday. Our instructor had us do some moves that help stretch the hamstrings, and I feel a huge difference. I'll be doing those at home!

I've really been able to stay focused on my eating. Writing everything down is making a huge difference. I'm still working on that major milestone before my birthday, and things look good. I don't think I'll have another 3 lb loss like last week, but I'm always trying :goodvibes

Debra -- I missed Fringe from the start, so my plan is to watch it from episode one when it comes out on dvd. That's how I caught the first season of Grey's, sometimes I don't like to commit until I know things are going to move forward. I also have to agree with Richard about the Star Trek movie. Perhaps it's because my movie fare usually includes the likes of "Hannah Montana" and "Monsters vs. Aliens", but I really liked most aspects of the movie. I don't think it's a spoiler to say I had the new perspective that the entire bridge crew are actually rock stars, that's why they wanted to be on the Federation's new flag ship. I don't think that was ever communicated in the original. I'm glossing over the parts which seem a bit unbelieveable with regard to Starfleet personnel. I applaud the effort to appeal to a younger generation. :dogdance: I hope you like The Beck Diet Solution. I think it is helping, it's certainly made me think about weight loss in a more constructive way.

Mel -- Star Trek is what made me a sci fi fan, well, that and the original Battlestar Galactica. Yes, it wasn't very good, but I was more interested in Dirk Benedict at the time ;), and the imaginative stories pulled me in. I had a couple of good friends who were also fans of Star Trek and BG, and in junior high we used to write these stories (featuring ourselves) about the various adventures of our heroes (note: we were the girls they got at the end). Luckily I started reading Ben Bova, Ursula K. Le Guin, Orson Scott Card, etc., and evolved in my sci fi fandom (of course, I'm still interesting in a handsome lead, no reason not to have eye candy and a great story! ;))

JenB -- What a fantastic vacation! I'm glad you were able to take a break and get away. :beach:

Jackie -- Oh my goodness, that poor girl. I know you will be there to help her as much as you can. I hope the puppy is feeling like her old self again. :dog:

Julie -- You know we need a Trippie! Let us know all about your adventures over April Vacation, particularly those involving rides, food, and hotel pools! :cloud9:

Ok, that's all I have time for now. Everyone have a fantastic day, and let's keep moving!

Maria :upsidedow

Hi Team - Oh wait, does anyone remember me??? I have limited computer play time as my at home job requires my internet connection and I can't multi-task while doing it. So it rots at times. Then I log in and just don't get to posting everywhere I want to! Sorry. I really am trying to get better with that!!!

Debra - My miles/hours are updated. I am sorry for the delay AGAIN... just kick me!

To everyone else... I really need to catch up! Sorry!!!

Okay, I've been such a bad captain in recording miles & minutes and reminding folks. Sorry about that!

Here's who I need numbers from:

  • Corinna
  • Denny
  • Christa
  • JenB
  • Julie
  • Robert
  • Linda

Remember, you did the work so you might as well get some bragging rights from it! :goodvibes

Also, any more races to the calendar? I need to update mine, too, so look for that. DOOD and I are finally making some decisions. :woohoo:

Jackie: How are you and and your DD doing with everything. It's such a busy, celebratory time for her, but sad too, what with the dead of DD's friend's parents. And even the bittersweet sense that your little girl is growing up.

Jeanne: Status update on your health and foot?

Julie: You're home now. We need the dirt. Or at least a dose of the magic.

JenG: Training and planning updates for the DL 1/2, please! I know it looks like I'm not going to make it, but I keep dropping hints to the DOODster.

Sunny: Do you have more races coming up? I'm so impressed by your progress!

Corinna: Information on your Mother's Day weekend? How are your fitness plans coming along?

Trekkers/Trekkies: I agree with your overall assessents of a lot of the Star Trek movie, I do. And I did like it, so I hope you don't feel I'm being overly critical (or any more than normal :rotfl2:). And I hope you all know that you have to filter what I say about movies with the knowledge that it's a professional interest of mine, and see over 30 movies a year in the theater. Obsessive, I know. :rolleyes1 So when I like a movie, it is sincere.

I guess I was just hoping for something more....radical. The original ST was incredibly radical for its time, as you all know. And I wanted that, for our time, as a nod to the series and less "faithful" to the series as it got established over time/reruns/movies, I guess. More like BSG's reboot, with new ideologies to explore in addition to the old and new characters to play with. (Or a new focus on familiar characters, instead of the familiar focus on you-know-whos.)

Mel: Despite my mom's love of ST, didn't really pay much attention to the orginal until after I'd gotten hooked on TNG. Q and the Borg--definitive moments in my sci-fi education. (And Maria, I still have a crush on Patrick Stewart.) I love that you were hooked on Roddenberry's worldviews--me, too, even if some of them conflict with one another. More of that was what I was hoping for in the movie (again, for our time.) Also impressed that your DD is thinking about a cultural anthropology project on ST. Well worth it. She might enjoy reading Constance Penley's NASA/Trek if she decides to go in that direction. I know you'd like it.

And how are you feeling about this weekend's duathlon? Is there a tri in your future?

Richard: I 100% agree that the film is a smart restart to the franchise. I think it will appeal to both ST fans and new audiences alike. Abrams knows how to pace a good action film, that's for sure, as well as make a visually compelling universe (no pun intended with the latter). And speaking of tris--as I was to Mel--how is your tri season coming?

Maria: I'm so happy to hear about all you've accomplished and that you're really focused on your eating and WOs. You've got to be happy with how things are moving along and the sense you're making progress. I, too, was raised with a love for BSG and crushed on Benedict. Also watched The Greatest American Hero and The Phoenix. Fond memories. But it was L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time that blew my mind, then LeGuin. I progressed, if you want to call it that, Harlan Ellison, and am rereading some of his short stories (still love the film A Boy and His Dog--best work Don Johnson ever did).

As for me: Well, you've read it all above, folks. I fell away from here for a while, and so did my eating/diet plans. I'm trying to recommit, but it's summer movie-going time, and that's always a munchie challenge for me. I've got quite a list of summer flicks to see and looking for more.

And we're traveling the weekend before Memorial Day, so another eating & workout challenge. Going to Stratford to see some plays, and there are beautiful running paths by a river, so I'm sure I'll do something active. But they also have all these great little restaurants and I'll be watching hours of plays, so I'm not sure I'll be balanced with the running/eating/sitting. So any tips on traveling and working out would be appreciated. I'll be bringing my resistance bands. Any other suggestions?

OK Debra,

I have updated my times since Friday for you. ;)

Tri season is coming along in due time. #2 will be another sprint tri in late June. I'll follow that up with an Olympic tri in late August or early September, and finally look to do the Longhorn Half Ironman in late October. Then it becomes marathon season for me. How's that for off-season maintenance!:rotfl:

I'm glad you enjoyed Star Trek as well, so much I'd like to talk about...so little time.

Jen :goodvibes great to see you back! Whatcha been up to?

Debra...we watch Fringe. Kinda reminds me of X-files with weird Uncle Fester, the mad scientist in the basement. Leonard Nimoy is going to be guest-starring there soon. (hmmm...is there a six degrees of separation for Star Trek or just Kevin Bacon?) Thanks for the recommendation for DD16's project.

Maria...I love what you said about the finding the ST characters were rockstars! Who knew Chekov was some child physics prodigy? I watched BSG as a kid, but only saw a couple of episodes of the new version.

Richard...wow...busy tri season for you! Can't wait to hear about your half iron!

Forgot to mention...wasn't the dude that played The Phoenix the helmsman in the Wrath of Khan movie?

Mel - Now you know what I have been up to!! NO GOOD! That's what!!!!!

Debra - HA!!! For the first time I WASN'T on the naughty list! Yah me!!!

OK, went to the Y and met my friend for a workout... elliptical and TM. No Bootcamp this week! We had a great time talking about all sorts on interesting things!!!!
