Okay, I've been such a bad captain in recording miles & minutes and reminding folks. Sorry about that!
Here's who I need numbers from:
- Corinna
- Denny
- Christa
- JenB
- Julie
- Robert
- Linda
Remember, you did the work so you might as well get some bragging rights from it!
Also, any more races to the calendar? I need to update mine, too, so look for that. DOOD and I are finally making some decisions.
Jackie: How are you and and your DD doing with everything. It's such a busy, celebratory time for her, but sad too, what with the dead of DD's friend's parents. And even the bittersweet sense that your little girl is growing up.
Jeanne: Status update on your health and foot?
Julie: You're home now. We need the dirt. Or at least a dose of the magic.
JenG: Training and planning updates for the DL 1/2, please! I know it looks like I'm not going to make it, but I keep dropping hints to the DOODster.
Sunny: Do you have more races coming up? I'm so impressed by your progress!
Corinna: Information on your Mother's Day weekend? How are your fitness plans coming along?
Trekkers/Trekkies: I agree with your overall assessents of a lot of the
Star Trek movie, I do. And I did like it, so I hope you don't feel I'm being overly critical (or any more than normal

). And I hope you all know that you have to filter what I say about movies with the knowledge that it's a professional interest of mine, and see over 30 movies a year in the theater. Obsessive, I know.

So when I like a movie, it is sincere.
I guess I was just hoping for something more....radical. The original ST was incredibly radical for its time, as you all know. And I wanted that, for our time, as a nod to the series and less "faithful" to the series as it got established over time/reruns/movies, I guess. More like BSG's reboot, with new ideologies to explore in addition to the old and new characters to play with. (Or a new focus on familiar characters, instead of the familiar focus on you-know-whos.)
Mel: Despite my mom's love of ST, didn't really pay much attention to the orginal until after I'd gotten hooked on TNG. Q and the Borg--definitive moments in my sci-fi education. (And Maria, I still have a crush on Patrick Stewart.) I love that you were hooked on Roddenberry's worldviews--me, too, even if some of them conflict with one another. More of that was what I was hoping for in the movie (again, for our time.) Also impressed that your DD is thinking about a cultural anthropology project on ST. Well worth it. She might enjoy reading Constance Penley's
NASA/Trek if she decides to go in that direction. I know you'd like it.
And how are you feeling about this weekend's duathlon? Is there a tri in your future?
Richard: I 100% agree that the film is a smart restart to the franchise. I think it will appeal to both ST fans and new audiences alike. Abrams knows how to pace a good action film, that's for sure, as well as make a visually compelling universe (no pun intended with the latter). And speaking of tris--as I was to Mel--how is your tri season coming?
Maria: I'm so happy to hear about all you've accomplished and that you're really focused on your eating and WOs. You've got to be happy with how things are moving along and the sense you're making progress. I, too, was raised with a love for
BSG and crushed on Benedict. Also watched
The Greatest American Hero and
The Phoenix. Fond memories. But it was L'Engle's
A Wrinkle in Time that blew my mind, then LeGuin. I progressed, if you want to call it that, Harlan Ellison, and am rereading some of his short stories (still love the film
A Boy and His Dog--best work Don Johnson ever did).
As for me: Well, you've read it all above, folks. I fell away from here for a while, and so did my eating/diet plans. I'm trying to recommit, but it's summer movie-going time, and that's always a munchie challenge for me. I've got quite a list of summer flicks to see and looking for more.
And we're traveling the weekend before Memorial Day, so another eating & workout challenge. Going to Stratford to see some plays, and there are beautiful running paths by a river, so I'm sure I'll do something active. But they also have all these great little restaurants and I'll be watching hours of plays, so I'm not sure I'll be balanced with the running/eating/sitting. So any tips on traveling and working out would be appreciated. I'll be bringing my resistance bands. Any other suggestions?
