Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Jeanne - I have wondered if what she used was really a duplicate medal, although the way she answered a question about it made it seem like it was her "real" medal, as if I would know. ;) In all seriousness, it was real to me, and that's good enough for me.

Debra - Chick-Fil-A does have a number of healthy options, something I like, plus their management philosophy seems to promote a positive workplace which bleeds over into treating customers well. On another subject , my DW does not like to travel, so I will be stuck with all her goodies. It'll just have to be my cross to bear.

I've tried to make quinoa one recently, and did an OK job. Does anyone have some recommended recipes?

I can't have it said I completely missed a Mixer, so here's my abbreviated reply (I'm up past my bedtime, you know!) --

healthy foods -- we always have fruit, frozen turkey burgers, veggies, yogurt and dark chocolate.

unhealthy foods -- we also have chips, candy, ice cream and dark chocolate. Most of these items are for ds, but I have been known to find them. I'm not taking credit for the Cocoa Puffs, though. Those belong to ds, and I'm not about to eat them!

Hi Team! Sorry I missed the mixer.

Healthy foods - we always have fruit, yogurt, Cheerios, & Special K in the house (I think my kids are the only kids I know who like Special K).

Unhealthy foods - with three kids, we have lots of those! Ice cream, cookies, the very tempting box of Lucky Charms, and nachos & Corona for Thursday nights!

I've missed all of you and hope to catch up soon. Things are crazy busy right now with the start of Little League, rehearsal for DD's dance recital, DS's preparation for his First Communion, DS's karate tournament, DD has another appt for her arm tomorrow (she may have the cast off before WDW :thumbsup2), packing for WDW, oh, and did I mention that the baby has been sick? :scared1: I really hope to catch up with everyone soon.

Have a great week! :goodvibes

Hi Julie!

You're only allowed to come back if you tease us with your ADRs...;)

Seriously, I hope DD is healing every day, and you are able to enjoy getting ready for your trip, even with everything going on!

We do want details, let us live vicariously through you! :goodvibes

I did 4 mi on the TM this morning, which felt great. I have yoga, which should leave me feeling even better. The sun is shining, it's *almost* warm, what more could we ask for?! :thumbsup2

Now, I'm back catching up with everyone.

Corinna: I love, love your race photos. You always look like you're genuinely having a good time WHILE you race. And those of us who can't race....pose. :rotfl: Plus, you have a true smile on your face.

Richard: What you, and Maria, have been saying about the back-to-back work meetings, etc. has had me thinking about the state of the American workplace. (It's similar in academe, believe it or not, although we do have the flexible teaching schedules.) In general, I think the workplace is shortsighted when it comes to offering employees incentives to be healthier--flex time for, say, a lunchtime workout or healthy-lifestyle bonuses (whether in insurance premiums or in bonuses). It kind of cheeses me when I think about it too much--so obviously I try not to think of it. :lmao: And I agree with Corinna--swimming seems like it's both hardcore and soothing.

Beth: Thanks for posting about your run and the song "I Run for Life." It's one of my favorites! Congrats on your PR and thanks for donating the miles to Nancy. You're such a generous soul, and your prayer runs/races are just more evidence of it. :thumbsup2

Bryan: Ah, yes, sodium! I really need to watch my sodium intake more closely. Thanks for the reminder.

So true, so true! But I NEED to feel my soul, right? I'm using this line from now on!

Julie: Great to see you--I was looking for you on the Lean Meaners. So sorry to hear your baby has been sick. And on top of all that busy-ness. Congrats to DS and DD for their respective accomplishments. (Good luck for DD's arm, btw.) How many days until WDW? Maria wants details, I want pictures. :goodvibes

Maria: WTG with the 4 miles and yoga. You sound very happy with the weather and the working out. Your weekend was all-around good, I hope?

Calling out the following folk, just to hear from you: Mel, Christa, Denny, Jackie, Jen, and Kathy!

As for me: I took a bit of a break this weekend. Not particularly because it was Easter, but because of my schedule. I had a slew of med. exams on Good Friday, which wiped me out that day and some of the next. And on Saturday, I met Cam and Howard of WISHer fame. :woohoo: They were in the Pgh area for the holiday, and we had a brunch meeting. Nice, low-key, and as my folks would say, Cam and Howard are "good people." Ideally, it's how I'd like to meet you all--small groups, over a tasty nosh.

I did get in an okay run on Saturday, but the rest of my workouts were lackluster. I'm chalking it up to an erratic schedule (DOOD was gone and my eating/sleeping routines were off) and we'll see what today holds for the run. It's sunny out, so it ought to be a mood elevator. That's one that doesn't include Muzak, btw. :thumbsup2

Debra - Your picture of the Vosages bar reminds me of a weird chocolate bar they made. Bacon and chocolate. A friend of mine sent me one in January while we were at Disney. I like bacon and chocolate but the two together wasn't very appealing. I'm still reading up on eggs, I love 'em so I really don't want to give them up.

Bryan - The amount of salt in some products is incredible! I've given up prepared/canned soups. I mean even the ones that have reduced sodium are still high. Then there are salad dressings ... yikes! I recently started making my own stuff. I've read that salt kills taste buds but if someone can cut down on their salt intake for about 3 weeks, the taste buds will grow back and then they can regain their taste for how much salt is in their food. Not sure if that's true but it is interesting... :)

Ok Maria & Debra, just for you :flower3::

We'll be in Disney from 4/21-4/29, staying at BCV. We've never stayed there, so I'm very excited. The kids don't know where we're staying - they want to be surprised. My parents are coming with us and my best friend will be there for a few days as well. DH's brother and his family will be in WDW the same week, so we'll hook up with them for some park time. Their kids aren't into rides and mine are, so I don't see us spending tons of time together, which is just fine with us. :rolleyes1

We're eating breakfast at Tusker House, Crystal Palace, and Captain's Grille. Lunch will be counter service every day. We'll have dinner at Spoodles, Brown Derby, Boma, Chefs de France, 50's Prime Time, the Plaza, and Jiko.

I can't wait. Things are just so busy and hectic that I feel like I really need a vacation. I'm looking forward to just having all that family time to relax and recharge.

Sorry I was MIA at the mixer-- sick kid and crazy work schedule but things are a bit better today.

Julie: You will love BCV-- the pool is awesome and the proximity to EPCOT can't be beat -- not to mention Beaches and Cream :thumbsup2

Nancy: Great to hear you are doing so well and signing up for events again.

We're ok here-- went to Washington DC for passover to visit friends. Thursday went well then DD and I were gong to see some museums while Dh worked for the day. The Metro and museums were mobbed but really nice. Unfortunately in the middle of Natural History Museum DD started to complain of a belly ache, then it got way worse  let's just say running to the bathroom with a sick 5 year old through a crowed museum is not fun-- we almost made it to a stall before she puked :confused3 I'm all for the environment but I now have a really good argument for having at least one paper towel dispenser in the bathroom-- the hot air things just aren't the best for clean up purposes... we went back to the house and DD took a nap then woke up covered in a strep rash. We drove back to NJ and got her tested and started on antibiotics. By Easter Sunday she was ready to hunt eggs with the best of them :) She is feeling 100% again and we are trying to find entertainment on this rainy spring break day.

I went way overboard on the Easter goodies, so I'm going to try to get a good run in tonight to at least balance it out a bit. We have the Board Street Run in just a few weeks-- a 10 miler in Philadelphia.

Happy Tuesday to all

Joan - I think you said it all right there!!

Debra - At least it's not just me with the overworked (at times) meeting schedule. Sometimes it's my own fault to some degree as the meetings are for different employers [technically, I only have one employer, but I am also a local government official (part time with no salary) and so the meeting shcedules have a way of crossing each other]. No stress relief today with multiple meetings and I went out for breakfast instead of going to the gym. :guilty: Oh well, I'll be back tomorrow, I hadn't had an off day in a while and needed one.

Heads up, dear Wish teams, members and fans! We are doing another mixer. This one is dedicated to Vicky, our own little bunnyfoo!

The question is this: What is your favorite vegetable recipe? Double points if it is not just a sidedish or salad! The points can be cashed in duing marathon weekend when you see how your recipe helped us all become lythe and sleek, knowing beyond a doubt that we, all of WISH, are the best team there!!

Can't wait for dinner, now! See ya! Connie, captain of Hakuna Matata!

Hi Cousins... UGHHH... life has been crazy for me!!! But I am hanging in there.

My poor baby has been sick. She has asthma and also picked up a cold with a fever and everything went crazy. My fingers are crossed that she makes it to school tomorrow. Oh and my allergies are going through the roof!!! I need to get more allergy meds, hoping for Friday!!!

I am sorry I haven't kept up, but this thread moves oh so fast!! I am really trying to be a better cousin!!!

Debra - Did you get my hours/miles?

Everybody!

Don't forget the vegetable mixer at Hakuna Matata, today! We really need your ideas!!!

Okay, folks! We're halfway through the month of April. Taxes have been filed, so that pain can begin to recede in our memories. Time to check in with our April goals! I admit that I have been having motivation problems here for this past week and am going to use your accomplishments to get my lazy tookus in gear.

So, how are you doing in meeting your April goals? Here's what I have so far:

April Goals
  • Christa: Speed, chasing placement in AG
  • Corinna: Training for Groton 10K, WW online to hit the 20 lb. WISH clippie
  • Debra: Stop watching the clock when I run and start watching my FORM
  • Jackie: Core WOs, increase run intervals in SRs
  • JenB: Improving diet, consistent speed w/o walk breaks or intervals
  • JenniferG: Longer runs, more hills and strength training
  • Julie: Include XT
  • Maria: Consistency (24/30 days)
  • Nancy: Maintain weight, increase mileage to 3 miles (50% increase!) by mid-month.
  • Richard: Raising awareness of organ donation.

I'll admit that I'm having a hard time not watching the clock, as too many runs have been indoors on the TM recently. I did have a good run Tuesday, in which I felt more energized afterwards. When I did map my run to figure out the miles for the team, I was pleasantly surprised by the pace, too. So the goal today is to NOT repeat the route so I don't focus on the speed/clock situation.

And how about the rest of you?

Some shout-outs!

Julie: Oooh, BCV. I've never stayed there either, and would like to sometime. I hope your vacay is relaxing with the families and BF and all. Your ADRs include some of my favorites, and I know you'll eat well!

JenB: So sorry to hear about DD and the incident at the Natural History Museum. I'm glad she got to do the Easter Egg hunt, though. I, too, fell victim to the seductive gaze of the chocolate Easter bunny. So tempting... extra workouts this week for sure!

Richard: I hope you've been able to squeeze in some "you" time to exercise yesterday and today. I find being busy AND not being able to work out doubly stressful as well.

Jen: Your poor household, with the allergies and the asthma. I hope everything settles down for you. (Yes, I did get your miles/minutes!) Hope the personal life is settling down.

Maria: Richard and I have both finished Ender in Exile. I finally watched the series finale of BSG. And I'll be catching up with Lost tonight. Chat at your leisure?

Mel and Denny: Where are you both with Lost? I'm trying to avoid spoiler chatter...

Jeanne: How's your training for CMM going with the meds and all?

More shout-outs later, I promise!

Do you have room for one more? I'd like to join the 'Ohana team.

I'm having a terrible time getting onto the disboards lately, but hopefully I can be an active participant!

Sunny

Wow - I signed on cause I was feeling really down, and there's Sunny! I feel better already! :)

I'm in one of those not-so-good places right now. I just don't want to run. I don't want to do much of anything. We've been going for long walks/hikes with the puppies (I can prove this with the ticks I keep finding ), so I'm actually logging miles and minutes, and I'm still doing most of my 10-milers with my Saturday group, but I can't get motivated. I want to be motivated, but it's not there. DH is having a really tough time with a lot of issues, and things are not good financially, and I think it's all affecting me more than I'm willing to admit. And yes, I know, running would be a great help! I need a few kickstarts to get myself out there. The new Galloway season starts May 23, and I'll have to be committed by then, but I'd really like to be in great shape before we start!

I miss my 'Ohana cousins, but I just haven't felt much like chatting lately...

Jackie

Welcome to Ohana Sunny, we are always glad to have new cousins:welcome:

Jackie: Great job getting the miles in even though you aren't feelin' it right now. I'm with you on the lack of motivation, we have a race on the 3rd of May and I'm having a hard time making myself get the miles in that I need-- we won't even talk about diet. I'm hoping some nice spring days and a bit of sunlight will help.

Richard: I hope you've been able to squeeze in some "you" time to exercise yesterday and today. I find being busy AND not being able to work out doubly stressful as well.

Yes, Debra, I have squeezed in workouts yesterday and today, even if today meant waking up extra early to run in the dark--although there is something peaceful about being the only one around at an early hour. Tomorrow, I'll try to sneak out for lunch-time to swim at the local athletic center--after I have finished payroll!:thumbsup2

Hi Sunny!!

Debra, can we keep her, please, please, please, please !!!!!

OK, for anyone who happens to notice the thumbs down symbol at the top of my post. This is courtesy of CoCo, who put her paw across my keyboard as I was preparing to post message.

Yay Sunny's here!!!

Jackie...:grouphug: The mental stuff always kills me on a run. I always think if I run, I'd feel better and be able to sort through all the stressors, but it usually just results in a miserable run. Maybe you need a bit of time off from running?

Richard...feel free to send some of that payroll this way :thumbsup2

Christa...how did you train your Jack Russell to run with you? I took Lola, the crazy pup, with me tonight for 1.5 miles. She did okay, but the criss-crossing from side to side on the sidewalk nearly did us both in. She may be waaay too fast for me...at one point, Garmin said 9:46 pace :scared1: I may have to start running with our 14 yo dog instead...she's more my speed ;)

I have had the Vosges bacon and chocolate bar...a tad weird for me. I do like their Barcelona and the Red Fire Bar (chilies, cinnamon in dark chocolate)

My goals for April are to survive. My doc is on vacation for the rest of the month so it's all me all the time. Fortunately, call for us is not too bad but my patient schedule the next couple weeks is deadly. Our receptionist gave 2 weeks notice yesterday. All fun! But I just finished my last lecture...I have a review on May 1 and two exams to write, but class is almost over. I have really enjoyed it, but will enjoy having my Fridays off back!

I am still working on eliminating intervals with some success. I started Higdon's Spring Training Plan this week. It's low mileage, but includes a 4th running day each week, something that has eluded me due to injuries to this point. I'm working on building up a good base so I can go into half training and work on the double digit long runs.

Lost...we have finished season 4 and are waiting to catch season 5 when the reruns start.

Can someone explain Monty Python to me? DH finds their movies quite hysterical, but I'm a little lost on the humor.

Reading a good book, The Summoner by Gail Martin. Mages, warrior princesses, vampires...all good fun!

Okay enough about me...
