Day Four and we were off to Florence with a stop in Assisi. The back seat girls were happily together in the back, talking and laughing all the way to Assisi.
Assisi is a medieval town atop a hill. It is a beautiful, amazing little town.
My only complaint is I wished we had another hour or so to spend there.
When we first arrived we went to the top of the hill to the Basilica where St Francis is buried. We had a wonderful local guide that showed us the Basilica (no pics allowed inside). The ceiling took your breath away, it looked like the night sky. We were first taken down to where St Francis is buried and then we had the tour of the rest of the basilica. It is huge! At the end of the tour the guide had a wonderful message. Todays youth is so plugged in with tv, ipods, etc that they are bombarded with all the negative in the world, we should all take the time each day and tell the youth in our life something positive to offset the negative.
As the tour ended we were given some free time to explore and get lunch. Camille and Steph had wanted to eat right away, while the rest of us wanted to shop a bit then eat. We stopped at the ladies room (that you had to pay for) and then split up. I bought a beautiful pashmina, Barb got something for one of her grandkids and Tracy ended up with nothing.
While shopping we explored a bit too
We found a nice little restaurant to eat in and it was conveniently next to a bank with an ATM machine. We were all in need of cash at this point. I had a yummy tortellini and some zucchini for lunch. With that it was time to board the bus and leave for Florence.
We all were tired and at some point I think each of us fell asleep.
As we were heading into Florence I remembered the movie Tea with Mussolini took place here and with that the tour guide mentioned it as well.
We checked into a lovely European style hotel. I got a room on the top floor with a balcony over looking the courtyard. As I stepped onto my balcony it turned out Tracy had the room next to me and shared (with a railing in between) the balcony with me.
There was an optional dinner trip to a local farm that the back seat girls opted out of. We decided to explore Florence on our own.
As we headed out, a block from our hotel, we came up on the back of a building that you couldnt walk on the sidewalk and had cameras on it, as we rounded the corner we saw Italian military guarding it. Then I saw it, the American flag. Now I was the only Yank in this group. I yelled out MY PEEPS! With my arms outstretched. Steph told me to go touch the building and she would take my pic, with that the Italian military ran over yelling out us. Steph points at me but shes Americano. The guy looks at her and shes like NO IM A CANUCK! We were cracking up!
We walked quite a bit and got off the beaten path and found a great local restaurant. We had the most delicious dinner with lots of laughs! It was a lovely night out and we opted for an outdoor table.
After our delicious dinner we headed back to the hotel and talked some more sitting in the courtyard.
I was exhausted as I went up to bed.
