I just did a google search and found this:

SUN POISONING

Sun poisoning is a nonscientific term that refers to a variety of sun-allergic responses. Light-skinned people, who have less protective skin pigment, are especially susceptible to sun-poisoning, but it can occur in anyone who is exposed to enough sunlight. It often occurs when sun exposure is combined with a variety of drugs, chemicals, cosmetics, and plants.

The classic example of sun poisoning is sunburn. We all know that redheads suffer more from the effects of the sun's rays than the rest of the population. This is because their skin contains less melanin pigment, which is one of the body's main defenses against sunburn. Black people rarely suffer from sunburn because the pigment in the upper layers of their skin prevents the penetration of the sunburn rays to the sensitive, deeper layers.

The use of certain common drugs can alter the skin's normal protective response to the sun in some susceptible people. Such individuals develop a severe rash with blisters from the slightest exposure to sunlight or even fluorescent light. Drugs most commonly implicated in this type of reaction are sulfa containing drugs, tetracycline and its relatives, various tranquilizers, high blood pressure medications, birth control pills, and oral medications used for diabetes and fungus infections such as ringworm.

Direct contact with certain chemicals, followed by sun exposure also can cause sun poisoning. The most common substances that cause these "sun-allergic" responses are found in deodorant bar soaps, detergents, certain suntan lotions, shampoos, "first-aid" creams, and various cosmetics and toiletries. Even chemicals found in a variety of vegetables and fruits can cause sun-sensitive reactions. Gardeners and farmers who spend time in the sun and handle foods such as carrots, celery, parsnips, figs, and limes are especially susceptible. Sun poisoning has also been reported as a result of using herbal shampoos prior to sun exposure.

The symptoms of sun allergy consist of severe itching and a rash. They typically occur a few days after the combination of the chemical substance and the light. This sensitivity can be so pronounced that a minute amount of the offending substance left on the skin, followed by exposure to even fluorescent light, may trigger a reaction.

hi all, thanks for the warm welcome!! i live in salem , ohio , about 1 hour south east of cleveland and an hour west of pittsburgh. the weather here just sucks, so we're planning on moving to florida, tampa actually in the next 1 -2 years. have to pay off credit cards first. (my husband was in school for 7 years, graduated in 2006, so had LOTS to catch up on!!) i'm actually not up this early , but still up :surfweb: at work!! i'm an ER nurse and work midnigts full time ( 3 nights, 12 hour shifts) i have 3 amazing kids , ds (9), dd(7), ds (2). i have 2 children with high -functioning autism, dd and ds (2). they are thriving in therapy, so all is well!! it's actually quite amazing the things they can do. i love all things disney, (duh, i'm on this board). it's nice to meet some crazy, fun, loving, disney freaks like myself. our next trip is sept 12-20. can't wait. so that's me in a nutshell . look forward to chatting! better get back to work :rolleyes1 :blush:
I have a Dneph 3 who has high functioning autism as well. One year has made all the difference in the world! :goodvibes
I love that you're an ER nurse, my brother is also an ER nurse and my dream job is to be a forensic nurse. See, you fit right in! ;)
I had a freakout yesterday as my ex called to say that Leo split his chin open in a swimming pool accident. No stitches - they glued it. But not being there, wondering just how bad it looks, has me in pannicky mama mode. :guilty:
Ack!! Poor Leo! :hug: You'll feel so much better when you get to give him a big 'ol hug, V!

TE: I love your birth story - sounds so much like a movie! :lmao:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good Morning Everyone! :wave2: I'm supposed to be working on my project, but had to stop in to say hi and try to catch up. I've only got 2 pages done. :sad2:
:scared1:
Slate's super duper sunburn remedy:
I think this is more for sun poisoning, but I'm not an expert.
1. Take the absolute coldest shower possible (take your breath away cold) and don't use soap or shampoo.....sorry the itch is worse than the stink.
2. Do not dry off; pat dry if you have to, but NO rubbing.
3. Liberally cover all burned areas with Caladryl.
4. If you have a ceiling fan, turn it off; the breeze aggrevates your skin.
I have been burned twice in my life so severe I was ready to head to the ER, but not for the burn but rather the itch. Once was after a pharm failed to put a sun warning on a Rx. The other time I had been using Herbal Essence shampoo/conditioner. I'll have to think wayyy back, but the particular flavor of the conditioner can cause your skin to be super sensitive. The only place I was itching was on my back in the area where conditioner would drip from my hair.
BC pills can cause your to be more sensitive as well.
Have one problem with that I am allergic To calamine !! Yep I know that's weird ! It was discovered when I was about 7 , I was horribly allergic to bug bites, not in a life threatening way but itch, ooze swell you name it:scared1: and they took weeks to heal. Well one of the things I was given by Dr along with anti histamine was calamine! Low and behold I went to stay with an aunt and Mum forgot the calmine so Auntie used baking soda and water and voila I was healed in a couple of days. Thee df suddenly remembered that he was allergic to calamine! I can only wear/use Avon foundation even though others insist no calamine my skin says different!! Aren't you all glad I shared this!!:rotfl2:
That does make a Momma Anxious. I did the very same thing when I was 11, split my chin open and mom and dad were not anywhere around.And it was a Sunday. So when I called home to tell mom what happened.. yup... freak city..
Dad took me to see the town "Vet".. Small town Dr.. Pop 1300. Drove to his house.. picked him up and drove him to his office and he sewed me up. Did not have glue then. Hopefully he will not scar. I will say that the "Mederma" scar treatment REALLY worked for me..on a MAJOR Knee Surgery inscision.
BARELY noticable now.
Hope your little one is ok, V
Slate---making me think she may have a sun allergy....she has very sensitive skin (eczema as a little girl, keratosis now, and very fair). And she sneezes in the sun alot. :confused3
Katt---did u really see the vet?? :confused3
Guess there's more vets in KY than here---I can get my kids seen anytime, but can't get a vet out here for nothing! :mad:
(got my goats out mowing again today so have to keep going back out. I tied Noodles out hoping the kids would stay near her, but they keep wandering off....then she baas loudly and they run back and start nursing. :goodvibes )
Well.. he's not really a "Vet" but a small town Dr. Sometimes get called that.
THey made housecalls.. Dr Lewis and Dr Smith have both been to our house more times than I would want to count. That was/is a wonderful thing.. having a Dr. come to you.. for no EXTRA money.
When I was a young girl.. Dr. Visits were 8-10 Dollars. NO one had insurance. Small rural farming community.
Now of course..... the Vet HAD to make housecalls. Doc. Gross was the ONLY VET in the County. Sometimes it would be 9-10 pm when he would show up. As he had to do his regular hours.
And sometimes he would have to care for the HUMANS... like when I passsed out in his office Our Siamese cat needed a tooth pulled and I stayed to help hold her down.. the last thing I remember was my head hitting the refrigerator.
Maybe the VET was a better Doc.. than our Dr.'s :lmao: :lmao:
Katt - Like the movie Baby Boom. WHen DIane Keaton's character passes out and they take her to the vet:rotfl2:
T - How long is your project supposed to be?:confused3
V - Any word on Leo?:hug:
TE - Can you lend us the goats. Jim is outside cursing the lawn mower, I thought maybe the goats would be quieter;)
What did I miss abou the sunburn, tried to read back and couldn't find anything:confused3
I knew you would :rotfl2: And wow your birth story was a bit dramatic, glad they're alright though!
I went into Bed, Bath and Beyond for new kitchen rugs and came out with a strainer and measuring cup. How does that happen
:rotfl2: Does it happen lots???
My Ab story (15 years ago...sniff/sniff again!)
Is she nearly 15 TE? :sad1: :rotfl2:
Had a flank steak that was marinated overnight in the MOST awesome marinade. YUMMMMMMMM. Mashed potatos, salad and rolls.
Well I played my golf competition (well the 1st round) and we won :yay: We were leading by miles then we kinda played bad but we ended up winning on the last hole!!!! It's been gorgeous weather here, quite a few golfers got burnt today!
Baby Boom? Never saw the movie... A Vet is a Doctor and probably better than those for us humans.. they have to listen and guess to what is ailing the pets.. since the pets do not talk.
THat is a weird feeling.. waking up to ammonia realizing you just passed out.
Then feeling embarrassed.
:angel: I accept your apology Jo..:angel: I did not say a word.. and look at the harrassment you got. See It's not me... And I imagine these gals were doing this BEFORE I came to town.
It actualy turned out to be a nice day here. It's just about 70, so not that warm, but the sun is out. We took Jimmy to get his haircut, went food shopping, and then picked up some mulch so that Jim and Jimmy can finish the planting. Jim is running the lawnmower, Jimmy is playing Planter Heroes and watching Power Rangers, and I am doing 9 loads of :laundy: (don't know how I have 9 loads with only 2 of us in the house:sad2: ).
Making Chicken Cutlet, Scalloped Potatoes and Peas for dinner so I will have to go start breading the chicken soon. Otherwise it is a just a do nothing day for us.
:angel: I accept your apology Jo..:angel: I did not say a word.. and look at the harrassment you got. See It's not me... And I imagine these gals were doing this BEFORE I came to town.
:lmao:
Yep they did it before you arrived, pick on the little innocent English girl :rolleyes1 :rotfl2:
Does it sound better that we played with his ball the whole way round, never lost it and I gave it back to him at the end? :rotfl2:
Jimmy is playing Planter Heroes .
That sounds so cute :goodvibes
Watched Desperate Housewifes the other day and OMG it was a great episode, it was the halloween one with Bree and family all dressed up, hilarious :rotfl2:
Oh and Lost starts again tonight :yay:
Why, Jo, this sounds so deviant. You go with your bad self!
Ooooh, did you smell his ball? Was your husband watching?
So what are everyone's plans for the weekend????
Yesterday was DH's birthday. We played softball until it go too dark to see the ball (in other words, we played til someone got hurt) then we took the party into the garage and played darts for two hours. Today I am trying to walk upright. The good thing is I lost a pound yesterday. :thumbsup2
Anyone else lost? :confused3
GCSE's are the exams we take aged 16, A Levels are at the age of 18, you need to get good A Levels to go to University :thumbsup2
