Team 6 - Team Ohana - Check in and introduce!

Welcome Kelly. :welcome:

I think my life is back to normal after having a cold and then dealing with the entire new window issues. Plus other than shampooing the carpet my house is cleaner than it has been for quite awhile.

This week will be better than last week with the challenge as I have already done AB class, Pilates, walking and a few miles on the recumbent bike and it is only Tuesday.

I am torn about which Charity race to do. The Race for the Cure in Maryland which is only 30 minutes from me is the weekend we are leaving for WDW. Plus that race is huge they said they had 33,000 people there last year. Now I am looking at doing the one in Philly on Mother's Day which is a smaller event and 2 hours away. I just don't like Philly that much and the race is downtown. Also the big National Race for the Cure is in DC is 6/7/08 at the Mall. Again that would be a huge race but more easier to get to with the subway. Need to make a decision soon, but leaning toward the Philly one. I might be doing a second one also as I found a local 5K race that is for Ovarian Cancer Awarness.

Will try to catch up to everyone's posting later.

Nancy

Welcome, Kelly! :welcome: Just jump right in. I need to contact the spreadsheet guru regarding how to add your name to the team roster as we have run out of lines. The last time I fooled around with it, I really messed things up!

Jeanne - Your wish is my command. I can be the official Ohana Google Guru if you want!! I added Kelly and even fixed up the color. I will add her to our first page also!!!

Hi! Ohana:wave2:

Jeanne, good luck with the captain thing....turns out there should have been an application! Who knew it was going to be so much work!!! :confused3

I just dropped by to let you guys know that the game has been suspended so you don't have to worry about stressing your joints or injuring yourself ::yes:: . You just need to take it easy for a little while :beach: , enjoy some :happytv: and recover...since there is no game and all!:coffee: No need to roll out of bed just to put on some smelly workout gear! :rotfl: Btw, did I happen to mention the game is suspended??? :rolleyes1

Thanks, Jen....it looks great!

OMG, Dave is out of commission so Team HM just put another instigator up to the plate. :lmao: Nice try, Connie.....I heard that it's only Hakuna Matata that has ceased to exist. They just can't bear the thought of Team Ohana whoopping their butts. :cool1: (and yes, this job IS alot of work!)

Ah, Jeanne, you can't whoop us cause you can't catch us!!! :simba: Go Ohana....don't come in last!!! GO!! :cheer2:

Connie dear you shouldn't pick on the slower folk, they will get a complex. Now them Tripple Ds and those bunnies are looking pretty uppity, I read the story of the "Lion and the Hare", they start out fast then get over confident and then we thrash them like Lemmings.

As for picking you ladies for being captains:

One time years ago I was stationed at Alexandria La. There was a spill way at a small dam near there. We had stopped to watch people fish for a few minutes when all of a sudden an old Cajun man reached down in the rocks where he was sitting and pulled out a snake about 6 foot long and holding it by the tail snapped it like a wet towel, popped the head right off of it. The same kind of grit that old fellow had is what I see in you ladies

Scampering off now Panda:hippie:

Christa: Oooh, I want to do the Booty Loop! It sounds like fun, and the bragging rights....:rotfl: I don't know what you could say to convince DH that you haven't already listed here. Maybe you could hold your breath until you turn blue (it works for me)?!

Jen: Whoo hoo for powering through despite the lingering cold. That's the Ohana spirits.

Corrina: Yeah for you doing Godspell; how are you enjoying your responsibilities for the show? And how is the show shaping up?

Nancy: Great job on getting a variety of workouts/classes in & so early in the week! Good luck deciding on your charity race--it sounds like they all have their pros & cons. I like Philly & DC so I'd have a hard time deciding between those two areas, let alone the races. It's nice to have choices, though.

Connie: Oh, clever, clever Connie. I tell you what. My gym has TV monitors on all its cardio equipment. Tomorrow, if it snows, I'll go to the gym & watch a movie for you! I'm afraid I'll have to count the minutes & miles for Ohana, though. :rotfl2:

Dave: We may be slower, but that's because we're all focusing on endurance. We're in this challenge for the...wait for it...the long run! :lmao: By the way, don't lions spend most of their days sleeping? And isn't Simba a lion? Just saying that you all look like you're ready for a nap.

As for me: Yesterday was beeyooteeful, and I did my run, my XT, and then tacked on a stroll. Today is was rainy all day and all I really wanted to do curl up with a good book. But instead I tried a new yoga DVD & did my strength training. I wasn't very motivated today, but I did it--thanks to the team challenge! :flower3:

Hey team.... oops I did it again!!! Hey hey.. a little Brittney there to make you cringe!!

Anyhoooo... When the DD's were in swim class I managed 25 minutes of bike, 7 minutes of weights and 13 minutes of r/w. WOOOOOT..... 45 minutes and the breathing wasn't too happy. Oh, but I took it slow as to not aggravate it. So happy I am not giving up. Prior to this challenge I would have taken the free pass and skipped the workouts!

Since we are Team Ohana, we may need to have an Elvis song as our team song!!!! Hmmm, now which one? A Little Less Conversation, a Little More Action????

Good morning, all.

Thanks to windwalkerDave, I'm a new member of this great team.

I'm Kelley, 43, wife of Jeff, and mom to Doug and Betsy. That's us below.

I'm currently training for the Frederick (Md.) Half Marathon. After completing two fulls and four halves as a walker, this upcoming race will be the first that I actually try to run a little.

I'm currently doing a 5W/1R interval, but find it's too easy. Next week I'll probably switch to 4W/1R or 5W/2R (20% and 28% run, respectively. I can't decide which I'm up to.)

Now I'm off to find the mileage tally thread. I have a few to add. Have a great day, everyone.

Hi Kelly! I have a question....when you do intervals does it necessarily have to be in minutes, or can it go by distance? I often train on an indoor track where my Garmin doesn't register, but the laps are short so I sometimes walk 4, run 2, etc. I would think that would work just as well. Right now I'm at the point where the running doesn't give me too much advantage. I get so winded that my recovery walk is slower than my normal racewalk and so it all pretty much averages out. I'm working on it though. Did you do the Goofy in January?

DUDE (not to be confused with DOOD)! Are you calling me and my team slow? Dont make me turn all EQ on you. To quote the great Rico (on Hannah Montana)....Ha Ha Ha...you'll never catch me now!

As for Booty Loop comments....Jen - :rotfl: too funny....I cannot even think about running..or seeing others running a race with no clothes....but, if you ever have watched a tri....no I am not going there...OK I will...no....OK, just do not watch the men who jump on their bikes with only their speedo on...:scared1: Debra - you NEED to come and ride it sometime...we do ride with clothes on in Charlotte...well most of us anyway...:lmao:

About the 1/2...I am torn...not sure what I want to do. Guess I need to figure it out soon...seeing that the race is this weekend and I have not really done any tapering......:)

Hi Jeanne. Yes, I believe intervals are effective for either distance or time patterns. In fact, my Garmin205 even offers a distance/time option. For example, run 1 mile/walk 5 mins. And vice versa, Garmin allows time/distance.

Yup, did the Goofy in January. It's the kind of thing I'm glad to have done once, but will never try again. (Well, never say never, but I have no future plans.) The consecutive days thing really took a toll.

I won't make it back to Disney in '09 because we'll be there for a family reunion at Thanksgiving this year. For '10 I hope to have DH and the kids run the half with me.

Cheers.

Aloha Team Ohana!

How are we doin'? I did my 60 minutes last night on the TM, and I had to bargain with myself the entire way -- just 15 more minutes, etc. I was up to 4.3 mi, which is good for me. Tonight it's back to the bike, which means big miles for me :woohoo:

Kelly -- :welcome: It's great to have another cousin! Sorry we're going to miss you at Marathon Weekend next year, but we'll have a great time training together!

Jen -- Hmm. I guess I'm going to have to think my way through Elvis's song catalog. I have "Girl Happy" running through my head right now, but that's probably not the best choice!:lmao:

Debra -- You are a woman in motion! Wow! Great training day. I did my TM time and 30 minutes of weights, and I considered that alot. Maybe if I reset my parameters for what is alot of working out, my scale would reset, too...:rotfl:

Dave -- So glad to have our Panda back, even if you are an instigator! I would watch out for Christa if I were you, I think she scares me (in a good way!). ;)

Connie -- I believe you can't see us because we are so far ahead of you. That dust cloud is from our fleet feet.

Jeanne -- You are indeed our fearless leader. Thank you again for taking this on. It is greatly appreciated! :worship:

Nancy -- Wow, you did so much in just a few days! Team Ohana is on the loose!:yay:

Corinna -- So now I have "Day by Day" in my head. You guys are just like an ipod shuffle. I never know what's coming next, but a new song will start playing...Maybe I shouldn't admit that

Julie -- Forgive me and my memory. I am clearly on too many threads. :upsidedow So, did you survive the rain? It's nice when I'm going to sleep, but still having it when we woke up was less than optimal.

Mel -- I'm going to admit it, some of my reading is less than edifying. Right now I'm reading Shopoholic and Baby. I discovered the shopoholic series, and they are a real hoot.

Shell -- Why does it not surprise me that you have that cheerleading gene?! :cheer2:

Richard -- It sounds like you had a great time at your race, plus double miles for Team Ohana! Way to Go!:cool1:

Jim -- Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming -- every time I see your avatar, I think of Dory! :fish:

Losties -- Did anyone get the new tv guide? Sayid and Juliet are on the cover. I read the Lost article, but haven't gotten to the one on Naveen Andrews yet. Supposedly, we will have many answers by the end of this shortened season. :lovestruc

SciFi Alert -- For anyone enamored of Stargate SG-1, a movie which ties up the last massive battle with the Ori will be out March 11th, straight to dvd. I'm salivating already...

Ok, let's get this Team moving to the end of our week!
Maria

Well, I did my interval work this morning - the plan I'm doing calls for intervals in terms of mileage, so that's what I've been doing. Tough as it is.

Panda - that was the grossest story I've heard in a long time. So our captains are like a snake-head-popping cajun guy.....I'm not sure if we've been complimented or insulted. :rotfl:

Debra - I am enjoying working on Godspell - it is a kind of a chaotic production, though the quality of the show itself is amazingly good for community theater. The man who is playing the lead is a fantastic singer and actor - he can sound just like Mandy Patinkin when he wants to, and I think he does a few times in this show on purpose. I am having a great time finding creative solutions to allow the actors to have "ownership" of their props, while still making sure they are able to stay somewhat orderly between shows. If you can't find a prop, you can't use it, after all.

Jen - A theme song - what a great idea! And way to sqeeze a workout in during those swim lessons - very impressive.

Kelly -I saw your Goofy race report, I think. Congratulations on finishing! We'll be at WDW over Thanksgiving as well this year.

Christa - That's bad, not doing tapering before a long race, right? On the other hand, I guess some people run halves as training runs, so there wouldn't be a taper then. And thanks for the image of the men on their bikes with just their speedos. I imagine it works for some and not so much for others.

Maria - and you think I DON'T have Day By Day in my head most of the time these days. That song just gets in there and sticks. It's not my favorite, I must confess. Wait a second - you think we're like a shuffle? It sounds to me like you're the one with the first generation implanted MP3 player. :)

Have a great afternoon and evening, Team. Keep up the good work! :thumbsup2

Hi Team!

I hope everyone is having a good week.

I have to say that I've really enjoyed running this week since it's been "warm" here (40's & 50's). I just started running in January, so this is the first week I've run without freezing. It seemed like such a treat to not have to run around snowbanks or jump over patches of ice while I ran.

I was supposed to run today, but my little one decided that 3:21 AM was a really good time to wake up and start throwing stuff out of his crib. By the time I got him back to sleep it was 4:45. I usually get up at 5:00 to run, so that didn't happen. Hopefully, I can get a run in tomorrow to make up for skipping today.

Corinnak - It 's so funny that you mentioned Day By Day. Whenever I get a song stuck in my head and I want to get it out, my DH will start singing Day By Day. He knows it annoys me because then I get that song stuck in my head, and it's not one of my favorites.

Maria - Are you ready for more rain?

Have a great week everyone!

Jen: I love the idea of an Elvis theme song for us! "A Little Less Conversation" is about perfect, isn't it? I also like "Bossa Nova Baby."

Kelley: You've got some great training under your belt for the transition to R/W! Are you following a specific training program?

Jeanne: Thank you for helping us keep our team organized--I can't imagine the headaches. Thanks to Jen, too!

I was in the bookstore yesterday, browsing, and I looked through the Octavia Butler books. I do think they might like Kindred; while some of the descriptions are graphic, they're not any more so than those in The Handmaid's Tale. Here's a description from Amazon:

Kindred utilizes the devices of science fiction in order to answer the question "how could anybody be a slave?" A woman from the twentieth century, Dana is repeatedly brought back in time by her slave-owning ancestor Rufus when his life is endangered. She chooses to save him, knowing that because of her actions a free-born black woman will eventually become his slave and her own grandmother. When forced to live the life of a slave, Dana realizes she is not as strong as her ancestors. Unable to will herself back to her own time and unable to tolerate the institution of slavery, she attempts to run away and is caught within a few hours. Her illiterate ancestor Alice succeeds in eluding capture for four days even though "She knew only the area she'd been born and raised in, and she couldn't read a map." Alice is captured, beaten, and sold as a slave to Rufus. As Dana is sent back and forth through time, she continues to save Rufus's life, attempting during each visit to care for Alice, even as she is encouraging Alice to allow Rufus to rape her and thus ensure Dana's own birth. As a twentieth-century African-American woman trying to endure the brutalities of nineteenth-century slavery, Dana answers the question, "See how easily slaves are made?" For Dana, to choose to preserve an institution, to save a life, and nurture victimization is to choose to survive.

Christa: I have been thinking more about The Booty Loop. It actually sounds fun, in a sort of "Now that you've lost enough sleep doing the Goofy, how can you top it?" I love the website's description of training:

If you don’t have any particular goals (see answers to Numbers 1 and 2), then you could decide to do minimal preparation. (This route means you can eat all the Oreos and hot dogs you like and maybe take a walk around the block to prepare. The walk is optional.)

My type of event! (Except for the hot dogs.) I'm gonna consider it, although July might be rough for us. But I am intrigued.

Maria: Did your bargaining with the TM involve promises of chocolate? That's what mine usually does. (And now my body has caught on to the subterfuge--it now replies, "Oh no, I'm not falling for that again. You're a take-backer!") OH, and LOST TONIGHT!!!! :cheer2:

Corrina: Great job on the mileage intervals. I can't even imagine! Props to you for the props work on Godspell! :lmao: And the Mandy Patinkin singer sounds like a great benefit to the already-satisfying experience.

Julie: Speaking of props, I've got to give them to you, too, for doing the wintertime obstacle course. I hope you have a good run tomorrow.

As for me: Today is supposed to be a rest day, and I've been doing that because I really pushed myself yesterday with my run, circuit training, and some commuter miles. But I'm feeling so stiff that I think I'll try to squeeze in some stretching & floor work. Isn't that odd, that not working out can bother me more than a rest day?

Oh, and I posted this on the Lean Meaner thread, & then thought, "Why haven't I shared this on the Ohana thread?" DOOD made ADRs for breakfast breakfast at Ohana--because, well, he remembered I'm a member of Team Ohana & he thought I'd like my picture taken with Lilo and Stitch. Now, there's someone who really listens to all my ramblings, even if he doesn't care!

Hey guys! WISH I was not so tired and was still writing a script...but I am doing both so just popping in to say Hi!:wave2:
Will catch up later.

Morning Team. I had a really good week with all the cross training and walking that I did. I will post my numbers after I get home from work.

I wasn't able to make pump class last night so my 23 yr old son went with me to the gym. Now this child is into pumping iron and he told me he would work with me on the machines and free weights. Let's just say that my upper body is killing me today. He had me using things that I didn't even know existed at the gym. I am not fond of the instructor that teaches pump class (my friend Beth can second that) she has a very annoying personality and we are not going to look like her (size 2) no matter what she make us do. So I think I am going to have him work out a weight training schedule for me and when he is available I will use him as my personal trainer. He actually seemed to understand better what my goals are and the exercises that I need for both my upper body and legs. Plus I hope that it will help move the scale as after losing 8 pounds the scale won't budge.

Deb--- I registered for the Race for the Cure on Mothers Day in Philly. Both DH and I are doing it. Thanks so much for suggesting doing charity events, I think it was the push that I needed to do it. Also the book you posted Kindred looks interesting I might have to check it out. It is not the usual type of book that I read, but after reading so many murder mysteries they are all beginning to read like the same story.

Has anyone read the Twlight series by Stephanie Meyer? They started out being marketed to the teen age group, but has caught on with adults. It is about Vampires (Good type). There are currently 3 books in the series and the 4th is coming out in Aug. Also they just started production on the movie. It is one of those books that once you start reading them you want to start the next book.

Kelly--- Are you also going to be doing Baltimore again this year? I remember you doing the full there last year and we didn't get a chance to meet since I did the half. I am thinking of doing the half again this year. I would have done Frederick but that is Minnie weekend. If you do both you get a special medal if I read that correctly on the information I received.

Still loving the LOST episodes, though after the emotional one last week about Desmond and Penny I knew that this week would be a little less dramatic. Can Ben be anymore creepy? Though he sometimes has the best lines on the show. Like his deadpan remark about did the rabbit have a number. Loved the look on Sawyer and Hurley's face at the end.

For Jeanne here is an 8 minute clip that wraps up the previous seasons of LOST.

Reading throught everyones posting it looks like Team Ohana will have another great week.

Nancy

Hey team, just a quicky and I am super busy at work. Last night I did 10 minutes walking on the track and then went to bootcamp. It kicked my butt. I fell off the balance ball (Because I am soooooo graceful) and bruised my knee. The instructor was right next to me so all I could say was "well, that didn't work so well, huh!". Here is what I fell off doing (the body tuck one).

I hope I can post more later. I am pretty busy this weekend. I am helping to teach a knitting class to kids tomorrow and then Sunday may be teaching a sewing class in the afternoon. And I have to find time to get in a 6 miler!!
